Seniors

A good weekend for the Panthers. They played just two matches at home to JCU Riverway on Saturday, winning both of then convincingly. The Premiers won 4-0 to stay in third place on the ladder and cement their place in the top four. The Reserves won 6-0 and alsostay in third place. The Division 1, Division 2 and Colts teams all had a bye.

This week, all five teams are in action. On Sunday, the Premiers and Reserves are at home to Warriors, kicking off at 5.30 and 3.00. On Friday, the Division 1, Division 2 teams are at home to Brothers at 8.30 and 6.30 and Colts are away to Warriors at 6.30.

Premiers – Ayr Anzac Club

After suffering a 3–0 defeat to JCU earlier in the season, the Panthers had plenty of motivation heading into the return fixture. With a win guaranteeing finals football and securing no worse than a third-place finish, there was plenty on the line. Burdekin started brightly and were rewarded inside the opening twenty minutes when Matthew Kolb found the back of the net to give the home side the lead. JCU responded with a period of sustained pressure, but the Panthers’ defence stood firm to preserve the advantage. Just before half time, Jake Siandri doubled the lead, giving Burdekin a valuable 2–0 cushion heading into the break.

The Panthers wasted little time after the restart, with Jonte Grazioli extending the lead to 3–0 and putting the result firmly in Burdekin’s control. Antoine Moncoudiol then added a fourth to cap off an impressive team performance and seal a convincing 4–0 victory. The win secures Burdekin a place in the finals series and guarantees the team will finish no lower than third on the ladder. The only downside to an otherwise excellent afternoon was potential injuries to Elliott Dal Santo and Oliver Gabiola, with the club hoping both players recover quickly ahead of the finals.

Reserves – Burdekin Tyre Service

A very windy Saturday home game and Burdekin took to the field against JCU looking to win to consolidate second position on the ladder. The home side started very strongly and was completely dominant in all aspects of the game and winning 6-0 after leading 3-0 at half time. It started early with a goal from Jonte Grazioli after seven minutes with a well taken header from a Kyle Taylor cross. This combination was repeated in the 88th minute to score the last of six goals for the day. Jonte Grazioli scored four of the six goals with Cooper Kross and Landyon Chatfield scoring the others. Defensively the team was also strong, keeping a clean sheet with keeper Zack Durrant only having one save for the whole match.

Masters

The Masters numbers were up again and in near perfect conditions featured a pre-play of the EPL Opener. Arsenal 2 Coventry City 6! Best players on the night were the Coventry team. The Magic Moments were exceedingly rare, except for a Tobin Stubbs shot which cleared the Bocce Courts. Masters play every Monday night. All players are welcome, male, and female, useful and hopeless, halt and lame. Be there, International Park for 6.30 Kick Off.

Ladies

Monday Night Female Football is back! 6:30pm on field 1, come along, have some fun in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere while playing soccer and keeping fit. All abilities are welcome!

Juniors

There was plenty happening on the Junior soccer fields over the weekend, with action across both Saturday and Sunday despite very windy conditions. Saturday saw teams from Townsville travel to Ayr for our Under 8–Under 12 fixtures, with players taking the blustery weather in their stride and producing some great football throughout the day. Under 5-Under 7 rested up ready for their big day on Sunday.  

The weekend wrapped up with our annual Junior Carnival on Sunday, welcoming teams from across the northern region for a fantastic day of soccer. It was wonderful to see so many young players enjoying the game, with plenty of competitive matches, great sportsmanship, and a fantastic atmosphere from start to finish. A huge thank you to our volunteers, referees, coaches, managers, sponsors, and families who helped make another successful carnival possible.

International

With the World Cup finished the Socceroos have a break until the end of September. They then have two friendlies against Brazil. The first, on 25 September is in Townsville! And the second in Brisbane. The Socceroos then have a break until the AFC Asian Cup group matches in January.
