Burdekin plumbing apprentice Scarlet Jenkins has been named TAFE Queensland Townsville’s Female Trade Student of the Year.

The third-year Ferguson Plumbing apprentice earned the award ahead of a pool of 80 nominees, one of 12 major category winners announced at last week’s Townsville Trade Excellence Awards.

‍

The award recognises Scarlet’s efforts both in the classroom and on the ground, with a nomination by her TAFE teacher and a glowing review from her boss helping her secure the feat.

It comes after Apprentice of the Year recognition for her at last year’s ceremony—which, she says, added to the surprise of hearing her name called again.

‍

“I got the award last year, so I didn’t think I’d get it again,” she said.

“I was up against a hairdresser and a beauty technician—and I'm just a plumber. Then they called my name and I didn’t even have a speech planned.”

‍

Scarlet began her plumbing apprenticeship in 2024 after plans to become an electrician fell flat. She has since built up an affection for the dynamic nature of the job.

“Every day is different, which is what I like,” Scarlet said.

‍

“You’re always meeting new people, and every day is a new challenge that you need to try and solve. I’ve enjoyed learning how to solve them.”

She said she hopes to finish her plumbing apprenticeship and remain in the industry.
