Airville State School students proved that you are never too young to shape your community during a special visit from local leaders last Wednesday.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort, Deputy Mayor Max Musumeci, and Council Parks Coordinator Jaime St John visited the rural school to hear presentations from senior students regarding potential improvements to Plantation Park.

‍

As part of a classroom writing project, each student identified three potential enhancements for the popular local destination. Their practical proposals ranged from installing shade covers over sun-heated playground equipment to upgrading the park’s water features and establishing a student clean-up squad for the Juru Walk.

The students also highlighted existing features that make Plantation Park a community favourite.

Following the speeches, Mayor Dalle Cort discussed the inner workings of local government and emphasised the vital role resident feedback plays in council decisions, commending the students as the "young voices of the Burdekin."

For the senior cohort, the visit turned an English unit into a real-world lesson in civic engagement, community pride, and public speaking.

School officials expressed gratitude to the council representatives for taking the time to encourage young learners, praising the students for representing Airville State School with confidence and maturity.
