BMX riders from across the state will put the Burdekin’s newly sealed track through its paces at the annual Burdekin Cup this weekend.
Months of volunteer work came to a finale last week as the club completed final preparations for the 2026 event including sealing the final section of the track.
Burdekin BMX president Lisa Purssell said sealing the local BMX track had taken an enormous effort by volunteers in conjunction with grant funding, after the track suffered significant damage from recurrent wet seasons.
“In the 40 years our club has been operating this will be the first time our riders will enjoy a fully sealed track, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our club.
“The work that has been completed means we are heading into a wet season knowing our riders could be back on track sooner next year and our volunteers are not faced with the erosion repairs they’ve previously had to undertake.”
The Burdekin Cup, set to run from 31st October to 1st November, will be a fitting celebration of hundreds of volunteer hours to seal the track, says Ms Purssell.
The two-day carnival will host riders from as young as 2 years old to Masters with a number of riders returning to the track following the recent Atherton Carnival where the Burdekin was represented by more than 20 riders of various ages.
“Some of our biggest carnivals have attracted around 300 riders—however this year, with world championships here in Brisbane, we are not expecting those big numbers but we sure will get our regulars that come year in and year out,” Ms Purssell said.
