A new $1.5 million clubhouse has officially been unveiled at the historic Bendigo Bank Park, marking a major milestone for Burdekin Rugby League.
Officially opened by Member for Burdekin Dale Last during Hostplus Cup Country Week last weekend, the six-year project delivers a long-awaited upgrade to the facilities, replacing ageing dressing sheds that were no longer fit for purpose.
The new facility features modern dressing rooms, a dedicated referees room, first aid facilities and administration space, all set to be shared by both the Junior and Senior Clubs.
The project was funded through a $1 million Queensland Government election commitment made in October 2020, alongside significant contributions from the Burdekin Junior and Senior Rugby League clubs.
Initially planned to be staged, additional funding allocations allowed the redevelopment to be completed in full, bringing the total project value to $1.5 million.
The redevelopment delivered four new dressing rooms with showers and toilets, a referees room with its own shower and toilet, office space, a first aid room and upgraded public amenities, including an all-abilities toilet.
The new facilities will be shared by the Junior and Senior Clubs, hosting local primary and secondary schools, RLTD Senior and Junior Competitions, Bowen away games and the annual Shane Muspratt Cup each April.
Junior Club president Jarrod Smith said the redevelopment would benefit the wider community beyond the rugby league field.
“This upgrade is about more than the facilities. It’s about community, opportunity and securing a bright future for local rugby league in the Burdekin,” he said.
Senior Club president Alex Lennox said the new clubhouse would improve the experience for players, officials and visitors.
“The addition of public toilets, including a disabled toilet, will improve comfort and hygiene for all, while the new office space will support club administration and game-day operations. Referees will also benefit from a private room with their own shower and toilet,” he said.
“The four dressing rooms will enable men’s and women’s teams to prepare at the same time without overlap, improving privacy, efficiency and the overall experience for all users.”
While the facility was officially opened last weekend, construction was completed last year and the clubhouse has already been used extensively by local and visiting teams.
The club thanked Mr Last and the Queensland Government for their investment in the project, as well as Community Bank Home Hill & Ayr for its ongoing support through its naming rights partnership.
