The Burdekin Rugby Union Canetoads have claimed the Townsville Festival of 7s Men’s Cup after defeating the Monsoons Deutsch Minions 28-7 in a heated grand final.
The Burdekin side dominated the decider, flexing its offensive muscle to score four unanswered tries before the Minions crossed late in the match.
The Canetoads survived an early scare after an error from the kick-off handed the Minions an attacking opportunity, but twice held firm under pressure to keep their opponents scoreless.
Burdekin made the most of its chances at the other end, scoring two quick tries before half-time to establish a 14-0 lead.
Tempers flared early in the second half as the Canetoads added a long-range try before extending their advantage to 28-0 late in the contest.
The side finished the match with only four players on the field after two yellow cards for offside infringements were followed by a red card for a high tackle.
The Minions eventually broke through for a consolation try in the dying stages, but the result was already beyond doubt.
