This week I want to talk about two issues that are important to the future of our community.

Firstly, Burdekin Shire Council joins councils across Queensland in strongly opposing proposed changes to Federal disaster funding arrangements. Disaster recovery is not simply another political debate. These changes could have significant consequences for regional communities like ours.

Every extra dollar Council is forced to spend on disaster recovery is a dollar that cannot be invested in roads, parks, community facilities and other essential services. In some cases, damaged infrastructure may not be rebuilt at all. Quite simply, it's a no dealfor the Burdekin.

I am also concerned about the future of the Ayr Fire and Rescue Station. Our community has been promised a new 24/7 staffed station alongside the Ambulance Service on Chippendale Street. Recent discussions suggest we may receive a lesser standard of service than what is currently available.

For a growing community that covers such a large geographic area, that is simply not good enough. Emergency services save lives, protect property and provide peace of mind to residents. The Burdekin deserves better. This is another no deal for the Burdekin.

On a community note, don't forget to complete your Census. The information collected helps governments make informed decisions about future services and infrastructure.

Finally, a little piece of trivia. This year marks 60 years since Australia changed from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars and cents on 14 February 1966. I can still remember the catchy tune that helped Australians learn about the new currency!
