Year 11 students at Burdekin Catholic High School took the lead on R U OK? Day on 10th September, hosting a school-wide community BBQ breakfast aimed at fostering connection and highlighting the importance of mental health awareness.
Held annually on the second Thursday of September, R U OK? Day is a national day of action encouraging Australians to connect meaningfully with people in their lives and start conversations that could save a life. The initiative highlights how simple, regular check-ins can support anyone navigating life's ups and downs.
The morning event brought BCHS students and staff together over fresh food, creating an open space to start the day with open dialogue.
“It was so much more than a breakfast,” a school spokesperson said.
"Our students took the time to check in with one another, have conversations and make sure people knew they were not alone.”
School leadership praised the senior students for their initiative, kindness, and leadership, noting that their efforts embodied the college's core values.
While R U OK? Day serves as an annual national benchmark, the school community encouraged everyone across the Burdekin region to make checking in on friends, family, and colleagues a regular habit.
