Sarah O’Shea, 18, representing Burdekin Netball Association. Sarah is currently studying a Bachelor of Primary Education while also navigating work at Burdekin Printers, Ayr Anzac Memorial Club, and her commitments to reserve grade netball and club netball. Through being a Harvest Festival Queen, Sarah hopes to meet new people and experience new opportunities and challenges. She is passionate about being involved in her local community and enjoys connecting with people through sport and work. Sarah hopes to use this experience to grow in confidence, create lasting memories, and represent Burdekin Netball club and the Burdekin community with pride. Sarah Shepherd, 21-year-old, representing Home Hill Tennis Association. Sarah has been living in the Burdekin for over 19 years. She enjoys being in the great outdoors, either camping or down the beach or when she’s not doing that, she’s spending time with her closest friends. She is in her second year of studying primary education and when she is not studying, she works as a disability support worker. Sarah looks forward to the opportunity to represent the club she enjoys being a part of. Sarah looks forward to all the festivities and creating new bonds with the fellow queens and the community. Maddison Gallagher ,20, is proudly representing the Home Hill Rotary Club, an organization that she is greatly inspired by, she has seen firsthand how incredible the Rotary Club as organization has helped children with Disabilities including her own older sister who suffers with a rare Syndrome and has seen all the hard work and determination that they put back into the community, she is honored and proud to be doing her harvest festival journey with such an amazing group of people, she works full time at Home HILL IGA as the bakery manager ,in her free time you’ll she her out and about fishing with family down the creek or down at the local market selling cookies as she owns a baked goods business, she’s not Originally from the Burdekin but has done a hole lap of Australia and decided to call this little town home and has lived here for the last four years, she is so thrilled to have the chance to take place in this year’s Harvest festival and cannot wait to get out and about in her community Representing Home Hill/ Ayr loins club is Julea Farry who is 18 years old. She is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology at James Cook University. Julea was vice captain at Burdekin Christian college graduating in 2025. Julea is excited to be involved in the 2026 home hill Harvest festival and is excited to be representing Home Hill/Ayr Lions club. When Julea isn’t studying you can find her down the creek fishing, playing football for the Burdekin rugby Union cane toads or socialising with the girls at a rodeo. She is very excited to build relationships with the other queen entrants and is looking forward to attending the community events.

A 45-float Grand Parade brought down the curtain on an “outstandingly successful” Burdekin Water Festival last Saturday. Crowds lined Queen Street on 5th September for the marquee event which, alongside the Mardi Gras, brought an end to the three-month festival calendar. Water Festival Committee President Eusebio Aguirre said the turnout—up on previous years— was a “pleasant surprise” and fitting end to this year's festival. “With so much happening across the weekend, I thought attendance numbers might be down,” Eusebio said. “The committee was absolutely ecstatic with the turnout.” This year’s parade followed a “River Country Burdekin style” theme, with entrants leaning into the region’s rural character for their floats and costumes. Eusebio said the theme added to the atmosphere and reflected the region’s community spirit. “The smiles on the faces of those in the parade and throughout the streets showed that people were having a fantastic time,” he said. “I also spoke to several visitors from out of town who had never attended the Water Festival before, and their reaction was simply: ‘Wow, I've never seen anything like this before.’” The weekend capped off a landmark festival that broke tradition by celebrating both Junior and Senior Ambassadors at the QMN Crowning Lunch the weekend before. Eusebio said the new Photography Competition was also a standout success, naming it alongside the Garden Competition and Window Display Competition as calendar highlights. He was quick to praise the efforts of sponsors, ambassadors, committee members and volunteers who brought the event to fruition. With the dust barely settled, sights are already set on next year’s iteration. “The Water Festival is an event that benefits the entire community. After a lifechanging experience as an Ambassador in 2024’s monumental Burdekin Water Festival, Sasha Previtera has made the decision to join this year’s Burdekin Water Festival Committee to continue one of the community’s most treasured traditions.
“After such an amazing experience last year, I knew I wanted to stay involved in a meaningful way,” explained Sasha.
“Throughout last year’s festival, I saw how much heart goes into every event and how willing people are to come together to create something special - it really opened my eyes to the deep sense of community we have here, and I feel so lucky to be part of it.”
Alongside another former Ambassador, Sasha has undertaken the role of Social Media Manager for the event, and she cannot wait to bring 2025’s theme of Bon Voyage: Roam the Globe to life online.
“I’m especially looking forward to showcasing the creativity of the community, the Ambassador journey, and the fun, vibrant energy that makes this event so special - all whilst supporting the new Ambassadors through a different lens.”
In 2024, the Burdekin Water Festival made its triumphant return to the region following on from its unfortunate absence the year prior, and after witnessing the perseverance of the newly formed Committee, Sasha knew this was something she wanted to be part of.
“The dedication from both the Committee, Ambassadors and the wider community to bring back the Water Festival was inspiring - it truly showed how much this event means to everyone involved.”
With Burdekin Water Festival Grand Parade and Mardi Gras set for the 6th of September, Sasha hopes the idea of becoming an Ambassador has crossed the minds of many within the region.
“As an ambassador, I gained so much confidence in my ability to connect with others, represent my community, and speak publicly and it was such a rewarding experience that helped shape who I am today,” Sasha recalled.

Spirits are high as Burdekin Distillery prepares to return to the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival—this time offering something truly unprecedented for festival-goers.
The Giru-based distillery has earned a reputation for producing high-quality, award-winning spirits that celebrate the region's rich agricultural heritage, and has, over the years, become an integral part of the local community.
Returning to the festival as a Gold Sponsor, the team will this year bring with them a special, limited-edition rum: the “Distillers Edition - Burnt Cane Spirit.”
The “Burnt Cane Spirit” is uniquely made up of cane cut at the last Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championship two years ago.
“Last time we were there, we went in the next day to collect all the cane that was cut during the Championship, and we used it to distill this limited edition of rum that we’ll be selling at this years festival,” says Founder and Director of the company, Anthony Duggan.
The “Distillers Edition - Burnt Cane Spirit” will be available at the festival for $125, with $25 from each bottle sold being donated to charity.
The company’s stall will also, for the first time, feature an on-site mobile cane crusher, says Duggan.
“We’ll be giving demonstrations on how to crush the cane, get the juices out, and show how that whole process works… and then the juice that we get from this year will be sold in two years’ time as well.”
In addition to the hands-on demonstration, visitors can enjoy tastings of all Burdekin Distillery products, including other limited-edition rums. The distillery will be selling bottles of their spirits, but their products will also be available at the bar for immediate consumption, allowing attendees to enjoy a fresh taste of Burdekin’s finest, on-site.
Duggan says he and the team are eager to support the event again this year after also sponsoring the 2023 festival.
“It’s just fantastic to be part of the local community. We really enjoyed meeting lots of the locals last time,” he said.
“It’s a lot of fun, it’s very relaxed, everyone’s having a great time. They have food, drinks, music—what’s not to like.”

With a career spanning over two decades, half a million album sales, multiple gold and platinum records, and nine Golden Guitar Awards, Harvey is one of Australia’s most beloved and enduring artists.
Currently touring nationwide in celebration of his 17th studio album, Let The Song Take You Home, Harvey’s live show will transport you through country music’s golden moments. Expect a mix of classic favourites, new tracks, and all of his greatest hits—a night of storytelling and music.
Adam’s dad came from Whitsundays, and Adam grew up listening to country music with his dad, who had a fantastic selection of vinyl country music.
“My dad was a country music expert. He’d play songs and explain their history—like how a particular track was a hit in 1973 or how it marked the first time Johnny Cash defied the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
“He was like an encyclopedia.”
"As a kid, I fell in love with music, the songs, the way they made me feel, and the thought of writing my own one day.
Adam was gifted a guitar after his auntie found one in her new flat she had just moved into that the previous tenants had left. She brought its over to Adams dads house and said, “I was going to throw this out, but I thought you might want it,” and that's when Adam's music career began.
While Adam has won various awards, he said the most special ones are when you get a gold or platinum record. "People have to put fuel in their cars and buy groceries, those are necessities. But they don’t have to buy my music. So, when someone chooses to spend their hard-earned money on it, it really hits home. It makes me think, ‘Wow, they care enough, they believe in my music enough, to actually buy it.’
Adam shared how songs instantly evoke memories, inspiring the theme of his album.
“Every night, I sing a Kenny Rogers song that takes me back to Sunday mornings as a kid—Dad blaring his cassette at 6 a.m., singing off-key while making breakfast none of us wanted to wake up for.
“Music is the soundtrack of our lives, and it signifies the special moments, whether it's the song we dance to at our wedding or the song that we said goodbye to, a loved one at their send-off, or the, party that we'll talk about forever.”
Adam shared his enthusiasm for performing in regional areas, emphasising the unique energy of these audiences.
"The regions are better because, in big cities, people are spoiled for choice. They have multiple shows to choose from on any given night. But in regional areas, people make the effort—it’s a big occasion."
He encouraged everyone to attend, promising an unforgettable experience.
"I can guarantee they will have a great night, and if they’re not happy, I’ll give them their money back."

“I was actually at a Willie Nelson concert, and through a friend of a friend, Becky Cole, who was there, Willie asked me to get up and sing on the show, without knowing.”

Attention Burdekin rock fans – Daybreak is back! The local rock band is returning to their roots for an exclusive performance at the Ayr Hotel on Saturday, March 29th. If you love 80s, 90s, and 2000s rock classics, this is one gig you won’t want to miss!
Formed in Ayr, North Queensland, Daybreak is a band of proud locals who bring a fresh, high-energy take on rock music. Frontman Trent Worley shares, “We just basically go out and put on a rock show,” and that’s exactly what you can expect, a night of head-banging hits and an unforgettable atmosphere.
“We’re all born and bred in the Burdekin,” Trent says. “Chris and I have been playing music together since we were 12-13. It’s just like riding a bike.” The band's lineup includes Chris Quagliata on drums, Brodie Hanson on guitar, and Alexander Romeo on bass. With the band's long-term friendship and deep-rooted connection to the area, you can expect a performance that’s both home-city hard-core and incredibly electrifying.
The band’s diversity in musical influences sets them apart from other acts as “We take music from everywhere and take inspiration from everything that we hear,” says Trent. This diverse mix of influences makes Daybreak’s live shows unique, always delivering surprise songs along with the rock anthems you love.
“We’re going to get the crowd involved and make sure that everyone knows that it’s a free place to dance and sing.”

Daybreak's setlist is packed with rock classics that you won’t hear just anywhere. As Trent puts it, “The aim for our band when we set out to play gigs was to play songs that other bands weren't willing to have a go at. That’s what sets us apart, we’ll do stuff that other bands probably don’t even think of doing, or think, ‘Oh, that’s too hard to do.’”
This performance at the Ayr Hotel will be the perfect opportunity to see the band in action. “If they want to see us this year, this is probably their one big opportunity,” Trent says. And with the promise of a night full of energy, fun, and great music, it’s an opportunity classic rockers won’t want to miss.

The Fast Track Talent Showcase returned with a bang last weekend, captivating audiences as Queensland’s rising stars dazzled on stage. With over 55 acts competing, the event crowned its 2025 winners, including the dynamic band Category 5, who claimed the prestigious Best Overall Talent award.
Guest judge Hugh Sheridan was left in awe of the performances, which spanned music, dance, and more. Thanks to generous sponsors, winners walked away with over $7,000 in cash and prizes. The showcase proved once again to be an incredible platform for emerging artists, celebrating the exceptional talent of North Queensland.
The Fast Track Talent Showcase made an electrifying return, leaving audiences spellbound as Queensland’s up-and-coming stars delivered performances that will be remembered for years to come. The 2025 winners were announced at an unforgettable event that highlighted the incredible talent displayed across a wide range of categories.
With over 55 acts taking to the stage throughout the weekend, the judges had a tough task at hand. Among them was this year’s guest judge and mentor, the multi-talented Hugh Sheridan, who was equally impressed by the outstanding performances.
The winners walked away with more than $7,000 in cash and prizes, thanks to the generosity of major sponsors including NQHF, Wilmar Sugar & Renewables, Burdekin Catholic High School, Burdekin Christian College, Rotary Club of Ayr Inc, Burdekin Shire Council, and YoYo Music.
The prestigious Best Overall Talent award went to Category 5, a dynamic band whose captivating performance wowed both the judges and the audience. The Runner-Up Best Talent award was claimed by the incredibly gifted Gabriel Hatherell, whose soulful voice and masterful guitar playing left a lasting impression on everyone.
Other notable winners included Best Group Performance, awarded to Let’s Groove, a talented dance group; Fast Track to Fame, given to Blake Hanks for his impressive vocal talent; Best Musical Performer, which went to Ruby-Rae for her powerful singing and guitar playing; the Judges’ Special Mention, awarded to Isabelle McFie for her remarkable dancing skills; Rising Star Vocal Performer, presented to Laynie Ahearn for her incredible voice; Best Overall Presentation, which went to Lola Lombardi for her standout performance; and the Audience Favourite, awarded to Sofia Sarri, whose violin playing captivated the crowd.
The Fast Track Talent Showcase remains a powerful launchpad for emerging artists, offering them invaluable exposure and performance opportunities. With an enthusiastic audience and a panel of esteemed judges, the event delivered an unforgettable night of entertainment.
