St Francis Students Shine Across The Burdekin And Beyond

Sport continues to be a joyful and important part of life at St Francis Catholic School, with students showing commitment, teamwork and personal growth across a wide range of disciplines this year. Their achievements reflect not only skill, but the character and resilience they bring to representing their school and community.

Students took part in Burdekin Basketball, Soccer, Touch Football and Rugby League, with many progressing to North Queensland (NQ) and State-level opportunities.

In swimming, Mahli McShane represented NQ at the State Championships in Brisbane, placing 6th in Queensland, an outstanding achievement and a testament to her dedication.

Soccer was a standout, with five St Francis girls (Jayda Totrica, Zola Oar, Ava Pappalardo, Kryssa Mial and Adele Mial) and five boys (Jonah Wilson, Jobe Oar, Chad Quagliata, Arlo Oar and Jace Coleman-Blakoe) selected for the Burdekin team. Both Zola Oar and Jobe Oar went on to represent NQ at State Championships. Zola received Coach’s Player and Golden Boot, while Jobe impressed as the only 10-year-old competing in a 12-year-old team.

Basketball also saw strong representation, with Ava Pappalardo, Zola Oar and Jessica Robson selected for the Burdekin girls’ team. Ava performed exceptionally at NQ trials, making P&P and narrowly missing final selection. Mason Howie and Finn Roncato were named in the boys’ team.

In touch football, Jobe Oar and Mason Howie continued their strong seasons with Burdekin selection.

Athletics brought home one of the school’s proudest moments. St Francis won the Aggregate Trophy at the Burdekin Athletics Carnival. With 54 students competing and four age champions (Jai Fiamingo, Sahra Towler, Jobe Oar and Will Felesina) the day reflected the encouragement and team spirit shared across the group. Eleven students will now trial for NQ.

Cross Country success followed, with six students placing in the top three at Districts and progressing to NQ trials: Audrey Rickards, Taylor Davison, Jobe Oar, Jai Fiamingo, Sahra Towler and Katie Pucciarmati.

Across every sport, our students continue to show what can happen when young people are supported, encouraged and given opportunities to grow. Their achievements reflect the strong partnerships between families, coaches and staff and the sense of belonging at the heart of St Francis Catholic School.
