In a sizzling Sunday showdown, the Burdekin Clay Target Club wrapped up their final shoot for the year on December 10th, igniting hot competition under the sunny skies. Saturday’s Home Hill Cricket Association fixture saw Guardian Pharmacy take on Crowned Mongrels for the last game of the year.
Guardian Pharmacy won the toss and elected to bat, sending in opener Mark Coventry who set the pace scoring 65 runs not out from 32 balls, backed up ably by JD Wilkins scoring 52 runs not out from 41 balls.
Other noteworthy contributions came from Damien Ricketts scoring 15 from 22, Salvatore Cardillo scoring 13 from 13 and Leo Olditch scoring 11 from 11.
Crowned Mongrels bowlers James Casswell, Casper Licciardello and Liam Cannavan all took two wickets each while Troy Patti and Ryan Taylor each took one, seeing Guardian Pharmacy finish their 25 overs on 8/186.
With a total of 187 set for victory, Crowned Mongrels opener Andrew Wallwork got the run chase off to a flying start scoring 51 runs from 42 balls.
Liam Cannavan scored 30 from 22, Alex Stillhard scored 29 from 17 and Jaidyn Lambie-Fabbro scored 10 from 24 but the Mongrels weren’t able to keep the run rate up, finishing their 25 overs on 9/146.
JD Wilkins shone with the ball for Guardian Pharmacy, taking four wickets for 10 runs from three overs while Thomas Cardillo, Travis Wilkins, Jamie Grabs and Matthew Gardner all took one wicket and a run out went to Lee Watts.
As Home Hill Cricket Association breaks for the summer, Guardian Pharmacy go into the break on top of the ladder with three wins and two losses after five matches.
Crowned Mongrels place second on the ladder with three wins and three losses after six matches and Peto’s Marine sit closely behind on third with two wins and three losses after five matches.

A Burdekin-based sailor has joined forces with two Townsville sailors to finish first place at the She SAILS Open Regatta hosted by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.
Renee Cordingley and fellow Townsville Sailing Club members Lynda Sawbridge and Tilley Payn formed the NQ Girls and travelled to Newcastle to compete from November 25-26.
The three sailors took the lead and secured the regatta win with an impressive scorecard of 1st and 2nd places with an overall score of 23 points, despite not being able to prepare in the class of boat required for the regatta.
Renee Cordingley was born and bred in Home Hill and, despite the distance from her hometown to the nearest body of water, grew up sailing.
Her family had a hut at Cape Upstart where her dad owned a small boat that she and her brother would play in before he would take the two of them to Bowen to sail.
“My brother was sailing before me and I was sitting on the beach, and somebody needed a crew so they threw me in,” Renee recalled.
“The first time we went, we remember dad saying on the way down that this won’t be happening every weekend, then after my brother got in a boat, I don’t think we missed a weekend,” she laughed.
Renee was aged 10 when she first started competing and would spend weekends travelling to participate in club racing and north Queensland events.
“We quickly got into competing at national titles in the class we were sailing in the time,” she said.
Renee continued sailing after leaving school, focussing on weekend club competitions, when she met her husband who is also a sailor and sail maker.
The pair then started sailing and competing together.
“Other than having kids and needing to take some time off, we pretty much sailed the whole time,” she said.
Sailing with clubs in both Townsville and Bowen, Renee began to compete for national titles again.
“I just love being on the water and I do like to compete,” she said.
In both 2016 and 2017, she joined a group of women from Townsville to compete in the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta held in June in Melbourne.
In 2017, Renee skippered crew of five, and they won their division.
Years later, Renee, Lynda Sawbridge and Tilley Payn joined forces to form the NQ Girls.
They compete on a particular class of boat which makes it difficult to prepare as there are no similar boats in north Queensland.
Competing in regattas in both Mooloolaba and Newcastle in 2022 and 2023 are the only times the three ladies have sailed together in this type of boat, making the victory all the more astonishing.
“I’d never seen one before my first time, we just jumped on, pulled a rope to figure out what it does and go from there,” she said.
“It’s really hard to train … the only time we ever sail together is those events.”
Extra satisfaction came from the win after cancelled flights led to a stressful and costly expedition from Home Hill to Newcastle.
“After spending all that money, we thought we’d better win this regatta, so it was nice to actually go and do it,” Renee laughed.
“We were pretty excited.”
Treasurer of the Burdekin Trailer Yacht Club, which was founded in 1979, Renee said there was once a much more vibrant sailing community in the Burdekin.
“The members used to race from Groper Creek up to Cape Upstart,” she said.
“There are only three local yachts in our club at the moment.
“Anyone who wants to come for a sail, they can come and join.”

Burdekin native Adam Walton will make his grand slam main-draw debut as one of six Australian tennis players to be awarded the coveted main-draw singles wildcards for the 2024 Australian Open.
The 24-year-old, now based in Brisbane, started playing tennis in Home Hill aged 5 alongside his older brother, Jack, where weekends were filled with sport and travel.
“We played a lot of different sports in the Burdekin,” Adam said.
“I remember the Home Hill courts very fondly – inside the race track is a pretty cool set up for a tennis centre.
“Me and him would play down there with a lot of other young kids and we progressed.”
Coached by Arron Klumpp, Adam and his brother would travel anywhere from Mackay to Cairns on the weekends to compete in tournaments and develop their skills.
Taking every opportunity to further their young tennis careers, the brothers both received and accepted tennis scholarships to attend Brisbane school Churchie where they completed their final three years of schooling.
After finishing school, Adam pursued the US college pathway, attending the University of Tennessee and playing college tennis in America for five years before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and playing tennis professionally since August last year.
“I loved college tennis,” Adam reflected.
“It was definitely the right decision for me.
“I matured quite late physically and mentally, so I felt those years I got under my belt in college were really beneficial for my tennis and to grow stronger.
“Graduating last year, I was definitely in a better position to compete against the pros.
“In almost a year and a half, I’ve managed to climb the ranks a fair way.”
In his first full season on the ATP Challenger Tour, Adam won his first career tour title in August, winning the Atlantic Tire Championships I in Cary, North Carolina.
He also received a men’s qualifying singles wildcard in the 2023 Australian Open where he defeated 14th seed Pablo Andujar, a former world number 32, in his opening match.
“I played qualifying this year and that was eye-opening and as the year’s gone on, I believe I can match it with some of the best players,” he said.
Adam has since returned to Brisbane and is ranked at 178 ahead of next year’s grand slam.
Taking the next step into the main-draw, Adam is appreciative of the opportunity and acknowledges his current form and current rank.
“To receive that wildcard, I was extremely grateful,” he said.
“They only select five in the whole country so not many people get the opportunity, and I just can’t wait to showcase what I can do in January.
“This was my first year at it because I went down the college system, so I’d never had a main draw opportunity before, and my results were up there to be in the conversation.”
Adam is currently in the middle of preseason training in Brisbane which he said has been “pretty tough”.
“We’re doing a lot of hours on court, a lot of conditioning, a lot of gym and they’re big weeks,” he said.
“You’re trying to prepare yourself for the possibility of having to play five sets and repeat it.”
Adam was one of six Australian players to be awarded main-draw singles wildcards for the Australian Open, joining James Duckworth and Marc Polmans in the men’s singles draw while Kimberly Birrell, Olivia Gadecki and Taylah Preston will compete in the women’s singles competition.
He will also take part in the Australian Open Series tournaments leading into the grand slam.
The Australian Open will take place in Melbourne from January 14-28.

In the Big Games, Mottin Earthmovers and Nutrien Ladies prevailed again but there were some upsets in the other games.
In the Men’s A Grade final Mottin Earthmoving retained the Cup with a 2-0 defeat of Rocky Pond Warriors. Goal scorers for the Earthmovers were Josh Valle and Jared Giardina. Mottin’s have won the A Grade trophy for the last three years and seven times in the last eight years. Rocky Ponds Warriors were competing in Night Soccer for the first time and did very well.
The Ladies A Grade final was taken out for the third season in a row by Nutrien Ladies. They defeated UDS Ladies 4-0 with two goals from Kate Southern and one each from mother and daughter teammates Monica and Amaia Licciardello.
One of the highlights of the evening was the play off for the Ferg Holden Drinkers trophy. This was won by Borin n Scorin who beat Faircall 2-0. Most of the games were fairly close, as befits the finals, with four games going to extra time and Drop offs and two of those games going to Shoot Outs.

A bit of history: Night Soccer began in 1979 in Home Hill at the Home Hill Football Club with just eight teams. The competition transferred to Brothers in Ayr the following year. In 1981 the Ayr Parkside Panthers had had their flood lights installed at International Park and the competition has been played there ever since. Delta Cleaners were the inaugural sponsors and have stayed with us ever since. This must be some sort of record.

The forecast heatwave didn’t dampen the spirits of the players and parents at the last week of Junior Cricket at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Cricket Complex in Home Hill on Friday. The usual afternoon breeze at the grounds was enough to keep everyone comfortable while watching and playing. Some of the parents weren’t taking any risks of dehydration by keeping their fluid intake up with many trips to the canteen for a cool beverage or two. The Rookies and Challengers played some fun games and drills throughout their sessions and no stats were recorded this week. Billy Muilwyk was the winner of the ‘Player of the Week’ award.
A new player “trying out cricket” took out the best bowling in the Under 13s this game. Aarnav Desai clean bowled two batters in his overs to end up with 2 for 9 off two. Others to take wickets were William Chandler 1 for 8 and Nate Quagliata 1 for 15, the rest of the wickets were runouts. Top scorer with the bat was again Michael Finn with 15 not out, followed by Oscar Mahoney with 13 and Marshall Parker 11. ‘Players of the Week’ awards went to Aarnav and Oscar who also bowled very well getting one maiden and figures of 0 for 1 run.
Our combined Home Hill/Charters Towers Under 17 team travelled to Brothers’ home ground to play them on Saturday afternoon in a heat affected shortened 30 over game. During the week we had lost players to unavailability, injury and a positive Covid test Friday morning so we were playing with 7 players, a tough mission in the high temperature and humidity. One of our players had to leave early so we opted to bowl first which was also the hottest part of the game, it was certainly stacking up against us. Shorter spells for our pace bowlers and more overs for the spinners was our plan to combat the heat.
Our opening bowlers Salvatore and Thomas Cardillo were bowling fast and accurate and letting the new ball and turf pitch work for them. Thomas got the breakthrough with his second ball of his first over to get their opener snicking through to our keeper Jonty Furnell, they were 1 for 1. Thomas got the next one trapped in front in his last over of his spell, now they were 2 for 15 and looking a little shaky. It was now our spinners turn to build on the great position our openers had got us to.
Corey Heidke’s first ball skittled the batter’s wickets for a duck and had him taking the long walk back to the sheds. Two dot balls followed then another ball got through the defence for another duck. The next ball to the new batter had the same result, Corey was on figures of 3 for 0 and on a hattrick. All the fielders were brought in for the hattrick and final ball of the over which the batter squeezed past for a lucky single. Corey bowled the next batter a few overs later and could have got two more but for dropped catches and finished with 4 for 21 off 6 overs. Leo Olditch took the last wicket which was caught behind by Corey who was standing in for Jonty as he got a thumb injury and had to go off the field.
We had to get 93 to win but as Jonty was unable to bat, we only had 5 wickets in hand and not off to a good start as we were 1 wicket down for only 7 runs. That brought Harry Pickering and Salvatore together at the crease which resulted in a 63 run partnership until Harry was caught for 23 off 23 balls. Salvatore with the help of Thomas, Leo and Johnny Southwell reached the score just before drinks. Salvatore had smashed his way to 58 runs off 41 balls with 7 fours for a great win.

Peto's Marine won the toss and elected to bowl as they faced Crowned Mongrels on a steamy Saturday afternoon in Home Hill.
Their top order got the Mongrels off to a good start with openers Thomas Sarri and Andrew Wallwork scoring 24 runs from 28 balls and 12 from 17 respectively before first drop Jaidyn Lambie-Fabbro made 26 from 29.
The numbers seven and eight batsmen briefly resurrected the batting side from a middle order collapse with Alex Stillhard making 10 from 12 and Joel Hanson making 15 from 24, but the Peto’s Marine bowlers took the final wicket with one ball to spare.
Simon Vickers led with the ball, taking three wickets for 19 runs while Daniel Olditch took two and Josiah Ballin, Darren O’Keeffe, Ben Walters, Christopher Penna and Greg Flanagan all took one, restricting the Mongrels to 114 runs.
Despite losing an early wicket, Peto’s Marine made short work of their 115 run target, batting through their 25 overs to finish on 2/194.
Opener Ben Walters and number four bat Greg Flanagan both retired not out with half centuries, Ben making 50 from 50 and Greg 51 from 33.
Darren O’Keeffe contributed with 29 from 26, Simon Vickers with 27 from 20 not out and Mark Nosworthy with 15 from 13 not out.
Wickets for the Mongrels went to Jay Leckenby (one wicket for 10 runs from three overs) and Thomas Sarri (one for 12 from two).
Crowned Mongrels will back it up against Guardian Pharmacy this Saturday in the last game of the year.
Ben Walters retired not out on 50 runs from 50 balls
Simon Vickers took 3 wickets for 19 runs off 3 overs

On Thursday November 23, we had 15 players on a rather warm start to the afternoon’s battles.
With the new rink we are attempting to use all the rink, it was then that we discovered that we don't have any mystery balls for rink 8 mainly because we never used it previously.
So, rinks 5, 6 and 7 were used with 5 and 6 for 4 bowl pairs and 7 for 3 bowl triples.
Rink 5: Joe, who is really bowling beautiful, and Stephen defeated Judy and Mick 32 to 13 over 22 ends with Joe and Steve 15 ends to 7 ends.
Rink 6: John and Glen walked away with a comfortable win over Jim and Trevor 25 to 18 being 13 ends to 11 ends in a 24 end match.
Rink 7: Jocelyn, Des and Henry went on to win over Karl/Ray M, Alex and Gary 15 to 6.
The ends went to the former 12 ends to 6.
Winners of the lucky rink were Joe Linton and Stephen Doig and the weekly raffle winner was Gary Nosworthy.
Don't forget that Wednesday night bowls are on and a BBQ or sausage sizzle dinner prior to bowling, names in by 6pm for a 6:30 roll.
Thursday, names in by 1pm, roll off first bowl by 1.30pm.
