REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE Continued from cover Burdekin Netball Association’s junior representative teams have returned from the Queensland Junior State Age Championships with plenty to celebrate, producing strong performances against some of the state’s leading clubs. The Under 13 team finished an impressive 11th out of 21 teams, while the Under 14 side also secured 11th place from a field of 18 teams. These highly respectable results reflect not only the dedication of the players but also the depth of talent continuing to emerge through the Burdekin Netball Association pathways. The Association was also proud to see club player Luca Lawry selected to compete with QC Netball's boys team at the championships. Luca earned his invitation following a standout performance at the North Queensland School Sports netball championships in May. Luca's journey is a testament to the strength of grassroots sporting organisations and the important role community clubs play in developing young athletes. Netball runs deep in the Lawry family, with Luca's grandparents, uncle, aunties and siblings all having represented the Burdekin Netball Association over the years. Despite being one of the youngest members of the QC Netball team, Luca performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament and demonstrated enormous potential for the future. With his sights now firmly set on representing Australia at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, his future in the sport looks incredibly promising. The Burdekin Netball Association is proud to provide opportunities for aspiring netballers to represent the Burdekin region, challenge themselves against the state's best players and create lifelong memories and experiences through sport. Burdekin’s next generation of touch footballers will soon have their chance to hit the field, with the Under 14 competition kicking off next Wednesday, July 22. Sign-on will take place from 5pm, with both full teams and individual players encouraged to get involved. Those who nominate individually will be placed into teams to ensure everyone has the opportunity to take part. Seniors A good weekend for the Panthers. They played four games against Rebels, winning three, losing one and scoring twenty three goals! The Premiers and Reserves were away on Saturday with the Premiers winning 10-0 and the Reserves winning 7-0. The Division 1 and Division 2 teams were away on Friday night with the Division 1 losing 2-5 and the Division 2 winning 4-2. This week, all five teams are in action. On Friday, the Division 1 and Division 2 teams are at home to MA Olympic kicking off at 8.30 and 6.30. The Colts are away to Brothers with a 6.30 kick off. On Sunday, the Premiers and Reserves are at home to Estates kicking off at 5.00 and 3.00. Ladies Day tickets went on sale last Friday and sold out within ours. Did not get a ticket? Premiers – Ayr Anzac Club The Panthers produced a ruthless attacking display against Rebels, running out convincing 10–0 winners after dominating from the opening whistle. Jake Siandri made an immediate impact on his return from injury, opening the scoring inside the first three minutes. Elliott Dal Santo doubled the advantage after ten minutes before Jay Leckenby added a third in the 22nd minute. The goals continued to flow, with Matthew Kolb finding the net three minutes later, followed by Jaidyn Lambie-Fabbro in the thirtieth minute. Dal Santo then grabbed his second of the afternoon in the 34th minute to send the Panthers into the break with a commanding 6–0 lead. The second half began in much the same fashion, with Cooper Kross scoring just two minutes after the restart. Burdekin continued to create chances throughout the half and were rewarded late in the match. Ryan Scodellaro added the eighth goal in the 79th minute before Matthew Kolb claimed his second three minutes later. Jonte Grazioli completed the scoring in the 85th minute, capping off an impressive team performance. It was a clinical display across the park, with the Panthers showing their attacking quality while also keeping a clean sheet to round out a dominant 10–0 victory. Reserves – Burdekin Tyre Service The Panthers Reserves also produced an outstanding attacking performance against Rebels, recording a comprehensive 7–0 victory with goals spread across both halves. Cooper Kross got the scoring underway in just the fourth minute before Jhett Jones struck twice in quick succession, finding the net in the 12th and 13th minutes to put the Panthers firmly in control. Kross added his second of the afternoon just two minutes later, giving Burdekin a commanding 4–0 lead heading into half time. The Panthers picked up where they left off after the break. Jonte Grazioli extended the advantage in the 48th minute before Cooper Kross completed a well-deserved hat-trick with his third goal in the 53rd minute. Grazioli then rounded out the scoring in the 59th minute, grabbing his second of the match to seal an emphatic 7–0 victory. It was a dominant team performance from start to finish, with the Panthers controlling the contest throughout and showing plenty of quality in front of goal while keeping another clean sheet. Division 1 – Austral Masonry The Division 1 Panthers took on Rebels also but unfortunately suffered a 2-5 loss. Burdekin started well but could not convert their chances in front of goal, hitting the crossbar and hitting shots wide. Rebels made the most of their chances and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just twenty minutes which remained the score at half time. The Panthers were much better in the second half with goals to Krishneel Singh and Jack Shears but a penalty and a late goal to Rebels gave them the 5-2 win. A score that did not reflect the amount of possession or chances on goal that Burdekin had. Despite the loss a good performance from a relatively young Burdekin Division 1 side. Jack Shears and Jack Gimson had strong games. Division 2 – RG Customs The Funkies got their season back on track after a couple of tough games recently with a 4-2 win against Rebels. Jared Giardina opened the scoring before Chris Achille made it 2-0 after only five minutes of play. Rebels pulled a goal back soon afterwards and the score remained 2-1 to Burdekin at half time. The Funkies were quite dominant and in control of the game in the second half. Goals to Krishneel Singh and then James Dwyer from the penalty spot gave the Funkies a 4-1 lead approaching full time. Rebels scored a late goal, but the Funkies won 4-2 quite comfortably and move into 4th place on the table. Masters The Masters numbers were higher despite the cool conditions and featured a pre-play of the England v Norway World Cup Quarter Final. The game ended with Norway winning 4-2. after drawing 2-2 at half time. Best players on the night were Felipe Brazil and Shane Feeney. The Magic Moments were very rare! Masters play every Monday night. All players are welcome, male, and female, useful and hopeless, halt and lame. Be there, International Park for 6.30 Kick Off. Juniors Junior Saturday games are still on a break for the school holidays, but we’re looking forward to seeing everyone back on the field next weekend! While regular games were on pause, four Burdekin teams travelled to Townsville to compete in the Filippo Mele Memorial Competition from 7–9 July. It was a busy three days of soccer, with plenty of great games and valuable experience for our players. Well done to all players, coaches and families involved for representing the club throughout the competition. International The World Cup Is now at the semi-final stage. France plays Spain on Wednesday in Dallas and England meet Argentina in Atlanta on Thursday. Burdekin Roosters utility Nemia Nawave had a standout game against Western Lions at Bendigo Bank Park on Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough to get the locals over the line, going down 30-24. Both sides played open, fast football in the first half to have the scores 30-18 to the visiting Lions at the break. While the first half was fast and exciting, with eight tries scored, the second half was a dour affair with a lot of dropped ball as both teams tried to get the ascendancy. The Roosters looked the better team in attack in the second session, but dropped ball robbed them of tries at vital stages. Nothing could be taken away from the defence from both teams in the second session, as both fought valiantly to get on top. The loss by the locals sees them now in fifth place on the ladder, and with Centrals giving the premiers from the last two years, Souths, a hiding on Sunday, Western Lions are now equal third with Brothers behind Souths and Centrals. Coach Steve Lansley said the Roosters produced a spirited second-half fightback but were left to rue a costly opening 40 minutes as they went down to the Western Lions in an entertaining rugby league contest. The first half was an attacking spectacle, with an incredible scoreline as the Lions raced to 30 points while the Roosters kept themselves in the contest with three tries of their own. Defensive improvements after the break saw just one try scored in the entire second half, highlighting the commitment and resilience shown by the Roosters. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done, with the 30 points conceded before half-time proving too much to overcome. Despite the defeat, Burdekin never stopped competing and pushed the Lions all the way to the final siren. Mitch Brown was outstanding throughout, while Nemia once again provided plenty of spark in attack and Jake O’Brien impressed with his tireless work across the park. On to Ladies Day and the return of the Home Hill Devils reunion. For Burdekin, tries came from Lachlan Shepherd, Jake O’Brien, Nemia Nawave and Lach Bachbach. Jake O’Brien kicked four goals. In other A Grade games, Centrals caused the upset of the season so far, beating two-time premiers and undefeated this year Souths 50-10, while Brothers and Herbert River played out a 30-all draw and Norths beat Charters Towers 26-14. It was not a good day for the Roosters, with Western Lions easily winning the reserve grade 40-6 over a disappointing Burdekin team. The Lions led 24-0 at the break, and it wasn’t until near the end that the locals showed any glimpse of what they are capable of. Then Pryce Gesah finished off his match with a good try. Coach Peter Horan said he was thoroughly disappointed with the efforts of a number of players. Braiden Di Bella was the players’ player for a good effort, with Lincoln Boccolatte, Luca Lago, Bryce Caltiabano and Calem Saxby giving of their best. Pryce Gesah scored the try, converted by Dylan Doak. In other reserve grade matches, Norths beat Charters Towers 46-8, Brothers beat Herbert River 40-6 and Souths beat Centrals 34-6. The Roosters Under 19s had a bye for the weekend. Only one Ladies game was played, with Charters Towers beating Norths 24-12. Sunday afternoon at the Brandon Bowls Club saw players battling challenging wind conditions. Despite the difficulties, Norm Storrie, Geoff Taylor, and Peter Henderson triumphed, defeating Henry Hazel, Gary Nosworthy, and Ray Panacassio!
In second place, Ben Mills, Doug Kiehne, and Doug Robins outplayed Jim Murray, Vince Beitia, and Alan Garioch. Ken Ferguson, Helen Collins, and Kevin Collins secured third place by overcoming Mick McClosky, Hugh Montgomery, and Leo Kenny.
Friday night's celebrated winners were Ben Mills, Ross McLaughlin, Joe Ypinazar, and Gary Pearce.
Regular games are held every week on Wednesday afternoon, Friday night, and Sunday afternoon at the Brandon Bowls Club, and the community is invited to call 0476 302 889 for more information.

On Wednesday, 17 July, the Ayr Golf Club celebrated Queensland Country Bank Day, coinciding with the State of Origin Game 3. While the Maroons couldn't clinch the victory, the day was still a success, with the ladies donning their maroon gear and enjoying a fantastic day on the course.
Debbie Szendrey from Queensland Country Bank joined in the festivities and enjoyed the beautiful weather, with her sister, Janet Trezise, stepping in to present the awards.
Congratulations to the top performers: Ingrid Vaes, who secured third place with 36 points, Kim Manty, who took second place with 37 points and Angie Baxter, who claimed the top spot with an impressive 39 points.

On Wednesday, 31 July, the Ayr Golf Club hosted the annual Jan Pilcher Day, attracting a strong field of 23 ladies despite some having played four solid days of golf prior at the outstanding 2024 Handicap Pennant competition. The weather was pleasant with a bit of wind, but it didn't deter the golfers from achieving impressive scores.
This year, Jan Pilcher's daughter, Celeste, along with her children Radley and Jazlyn, travelled from Townsville to present the winners. Celeste reminisced about her childhood spent on the golf course, adding a personal touch to the event.
Katrina Hearn emerged as the winner with a remarkable score of 42 points. Runner-up Lorraine Henderson scored 36 points, continuing her excellent form after being the overall winner of the two-day Drummond Golf Vets Classic. Betty Durrant secured third place with 35 points.
Additionally, a special prize was awarded to Wendy Baker for traveling the greatest distance to participate, and Cecily Lena won the raffle.
The event was a wonderful tribute to Jan Pilcher, with participants and organisers alike feeling her presence throughout the day. Congratulations to all the winners and participants for making it a memorable occasion.

The Ayr Golf Club hosted their July monthly medal competition on the morning of Saturday 3 August, with 13 juniors participating in either a 3, 6, or 9 holes competition. The Nett winner of each competition was celebrated and awarded the July Monthly Medal.
River Vass emerged as the 3-hole monthly medal winner with an impressive Nett score of 4, indicating a move up to six holes is imminent. Logan McKeough secured the 6-hole medal with a Nett score of 23. Lyla Land, in her first 9-hole competition, won the monthly medal with a Nett score of 30. Congratulations to these outstanding juniors!
The gross winners were Jacob Munro for 3 holes, Kyle Wilkie for 6 holes, and Oscar Mahoney for 9 holes.

The Burdekin Rugby Union Canetoads had a fantastic weekend, securing victories across first, second, and third grades. The excitement was palpable as the teams clinched their wins in some nail-biting matches. Congratulations to all the players for their outstanding performance!

The Ayr Bowling Club was filled with exciting games and great company for another week, with many locals and travellers giving it their all on the green. On Wednesday, 24 July, social bowls featured three games of triples and one game of pairs, with J. Pirrone, G. Nixon, and W. Coonan the celebrated winners.
On Saturday 27 July, the social bowls winners were Jimmy, Chris, Happy, and Blake, and the day saw the club welcome visiting players to the green who shared their travel stories and enjoyed a bowl or two.
Sunday 28 July, was a proud day for the Ayr Bowling Club’s Ladies Premier Cup players in Townsville. Congratulations to B. Cornford, D. Olsen, H. Jorgenson, and Pam Power, who secured three wins: a +14 victory against Jubilee in round seven, another +14 win against Bowen in round eight, and a +9 triumph against Alligator Creek in round nine. The team showcased fantastic skills throughout the day.
Sunday also featured two Club semi-final championship triples games. The results were:
- J. Pirrone, R. Young, and C. Essex defeated D. Poli, J. McDonald, and M. Milan.
- J. Murray, J. Hall, and M. Parravicini defeated H. Horan (sub), S. Caltabiano, and B. Shepherd.
In the Championship Pairs final, C. Pearce and G. Pearce emerged victorious against J. Grabbi and L. Stidston.

Brandon Bowls Club’s 2024 Premier Cup team consisted of five exceptional and celebrated players: Helen Collins, Colleen Olsen, Lyn Storrie, Darrell Pearce, and Joy Woods. The event, hosted by the Suburban Bowls Club in Townsville, spans over four challenging days, with 11 other teams competing for the prestigious title and the opportunity to host the event in 2025.
After three days of intense competition, the Brandon ladies faced tough opposition, securing 4 wins and 5 losses. In conclusion of the competition, the ladies were determined to finish strong in their last two games and make their mark in this highly competitive tournament.

The Roosters A grade team faced a tough battle last Sunday 28 July at Bushland Beach, narrowly losing to the Norths Devils with a score of 32–28. Coach Steve Lansley noted the team's struggle to capitalise on promising opportunities, often rushing to score rather than building up plays.
“Once again we failed to finish off promising moves by being too anxious to score - we are trying to score with every attacking move instead of building up,” said Lansley.
The Norths Devils started strong, quickly taking a 16-0 lead. However, the Roosters fought back, closing the gap to 16-12 by halftime. Unfortunately, poor execution and handling errors in the second half cost them the game. The defence also faltered at times, allowing Norths to make significant gains.
Despite the loss, Coach Lansley praised Lachlan Shepherd for his strong running and defence, and noted that Jye Olsen and Chris Gale made valuable contributions to the team. The Roosters' tries were scored by Nemia Nawave, Hayden Lammon, Kali Nauque, Lachlan Shepherd, and Epi Kikau, with Joel Mason converting four goals.
In other A grade matches, Herbert River defeated Centrals 42–18, Western Lions edged out Brothers 16–14, and Charters Towers and Souths both had byes.
The Roosters Reserves moved up to second place on the ladder after a 40–20 victory over Norths on Sunday. Coach Chris Perry acknowledged the win, though he described it as "sloppy but effective." He emphasised the need for greater dedication and commitment as the team approaches the finals.
Perry highlighted Tubby Hereon and Bradyn Cotter, playing their first games, as standout players, with Tubby earning the players' player award. The team scored tries through Suli (2), Nemia Nawave (2), Jayden Sgarbossa, Braedyn Cotter, and Dylan Doak, who also kicked six goals for a total of 16 points.
In other reserve grade matches, Herbert River defeated Centrals 42–8, Brothers beat Western Lions 36–6, and Souths overcame Bowen 24–8.
The Burdekin Hens did not play last weekend but were awarded two points after Norths forfeited their match. The previous Sunday, Centrals defeated Norths 28-0, with the Norths team suffering several injuries that left them short of players. The Hens are set to return to action this coming weekend against Centrals.

The Burdekin Panthers experienced a weekend of intense football action. Initially scheduled for four games, the Panthers saw the Division One Funkies secure a straightforward win by forfeit against Olympic, while the other three teams faced Estates in away games. They emerged victorious in two matches and narrowly lost one. On Sunday, the Premiers dominated with a 4-0 victory, the Under 23s clinched a 4-3 win, and the Ladies lost 2-3.
Looking ahead, the Panthers have four more games this week. On Friday night, the Division One Funkies will face Estates Navy away, and on Saturday, Sponsors Day, the Premiers, Under 23s, and Ladies will host Saints Eagles Souths at home.
The Ayr Anzac Club Premiers overcame a strong Estates side with a 4-0 victory. Luke Maguire opened the scoring with a penalty, followed by goals from Mason Matthews and Matthew Kolb. Jay Leckenby sealed the win after Estates’ goalkeeper was red-carded.
The Burdekin Tyre Service Under 23s Reserves faced a tough Sunday game in Townsville against ladder leaders Estates. Jhett Jones and Jack Shears scored in the first half, with Cooper Kross adding another after the break. Despite Estates’ fightback, Jones’ second goal clinched a crucial 4-3 victory to keep their finals hopes alive.
The Austral Masonry Funkies secured a win by forfeit from Olympic.
The Ayr Anzac Club Ladies started strong against Estates, with Brielle Astorquia scoring from a Kate Castelanelli cross. Estates quickly equalized and took the lead. Sienna Lago scored to make it 2-2 at halftime, but Estates regained the lead in the second half. Despite numerous chances, the Burdekin Ladies couldn't find the net again, ending in a narrow 2-3 loss.
The Under 13s Panthers faced Warriors 5 on Saturday at Paradise Park, losing 0-4. William Shears stood out with his high work rate. On Sunday, the Panthers faced Saints at home, losing 3-5. Despite the defeat, they displayed good ball movement, with goals from Rohan Kelly, Lincoln Innes, and William Shears. Parker Lawson received special recognition for his goalkeeping efforts.
In the juniors' section, Saturday saw another good week of football with great weather. Teams from Brothers and Northern Beaches travelled from Townsville to play, and some of Burdekin's older teams travelled to Townsville, ensuring a weekend filled with exciting matches and enthusiastic participation from young footballers.
The Burdekin Roosters are preparing for a challenging weekend as they travel to Townsville to face the Townsville Centrals across three grades at the Sports Reserve this Saturday afternoon.
The matches kick off on August 3 with the Hens playing at 1:10 PM, followed by the Reserves at 2:20 PM, and the A grade team at 3:50 PM.
A grade coach Steve Lansley is awaiting final player allocations from the Cowboys and Blackhawks, expecting Chris Gale and Roto Ravisore from the Hawks, and Henry Teuteu and Epi Kikau from the Cowboys. Jeremiah Matuatu, called up to the Cutters last week, performed well despite their loss to Norths Devils in Bowen.
Reflecting on last Sunday’s loss to Norths, Lansley noted that poor execution and defensive lapses were costly. The team struggled with offloading the ball in difficult positions. However, with Colby Johnson and possibly Ethan Hagarty returning from injury, the team hopes to improve, though Jones Munro and Rhett Williams are likely out for the season.
The Roosters’ A grade team is currently sixth on the ladder, with three wins and a draw, while Centrals sit in eighth place with one win and a draw. Last week, Centrals lost 42-18 to Herbert River in Ingham.
The Roosters' Reserves are faring better, sitting second on the ladder with eight wins and a draw. Last week, they capitalized on the Tigers' 42-8 loss to Herbert River with a 40-20 win over Norths. Coach Chris Perry hopes for a fitter team this week, though they will miss standout player Tubby Heron. Jerome Lacco, Alex Lennox, and Dalton McIninerny are expected to return. A win this weekend would strengthen their position for a second-place finish.
The Hens face a formidable opponent in the Centrals, who are unbeaten this season, scoring 404 points and conceding only 42. The Hens missed last week’s game due to a forfeit from Norths and had their previous match cut short due to an injury to a Towers player. Despite lacking the size of the Lady Tigers, the Hens are determined to challenge the Centrals.
In other matches this weekend, Brothers face Norths, Souths meet Charters Towers, and Herbert River hosts Western Lions.

The July Monthly Medal event, proudly sponsored by Eathornes Intersport, provided an excellent opportunity for the Ayr Golf Club’s ladies to compete, especially those who work during the week. This year’s competition featured strong performances across all grades.
In A Grade, Loretta Mauro emerged victorious with an impressive 68 net score. B Grade saw Cecily Lena take the top spot with a 73 net score. Gabby Cahill in C Grade scored an outstanding 41 stableford points, a sensational performance shared by Shirley Jones and Marion Chappell.
Each of these talented ladies received vouchers from Eathornes Intersport, and the Ayr Golf Club extends a warm congratulations to all the winners!
On Wednesday, 24 July, the Ayr Golf Club hosted its Commercial Tavern Day, featuring an Ambrose style partner event. Despite facing challenging cyclonic winds, 24 dedicated ladies participated in the competition, vying for Tavern Vouchers.
The winning pair, Loretta Mauro and Janet Trezise, delivered an impressive performance, scoring 66.25 and achieving an Eagle on Hole 8. Cecily Lena and Sandra Wight secured second place with a strong score of 68.25, while Tuk Williams and Wendy Baker came in third with 69.75.
The event was a great success, and the Ayr Golf Club thanks the Commercial Tavern for their unwavering support.
