The U12 school girls recently represented the Burdekin at the NQ Touch Football trials carnival in Airlie Beach. Playing five games over two days the girls competed against Whitsunday, Herbert River, Charters Towers and Townsville with a mixed bag of a win, a draw and some very narrow losses. Drawing on their experience from the Junior State Cup, the girls' skills were on show with strong sliding defence, excellent rucking and some creative line attack. Following the round games two Burdekin players, Taylor Chapman and Bethana Rattler were named in the possibles and probables resulting in Taylor's selection in the NQ U12 team. Taylor was also awarded the Heather Desbois medal for the Burdekin's Best and Fairest. "All 12 girls should feel proud of the way they represented the Burdekin. They are a team on the rise, showing huge improvements," said team Manager Petrina Wellington. CAPTION: Taylor Chapman was awarded the Heather Desbois medal for the Burdekin's Best and Fairest. On Saturday 16 May 2026, around 50 Home Hill Bowls Club members and visitors gathered to farewell resident caretaker Warren Bunn, known as “Yougi”. Yougi has been caretaker for approximately 30 months, commencing 15 November 2023. At that time, he had played only one game of bowls in the Burdekin, but living alongside the green quickly saw him develop into a capable player. By 2024, he was selected to represent the club in NQ Pennants. Now approaching 83, Yougi is relocating to Brisbane to be closer to family and will live with his youngest daughter. The club extends its best wishes and hopes he finds a new bowling club to join. On the day, five rinks of triples were played. The overall winners on margins were Alex Bojack, Jo Roser and Bob Young. Wednesday night featured a mix of social lawn bowls and the Home Hill Hot Shots darts club. The evening remains popular for its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Hot Shots advise that Darts of Origin begins 27 May 2026, followed by the first of three Origin raffles at Friday night 8 Ball. All community members are welcome. Bowls names in by 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start (Ph 0468 313 115). Darts start 6.00pm (Ph Scott 0480 208 335). Thursday afternoon club bowls hosted four games of triples and two pairs matches, marking the start of the club pairs championships. Visiting bowlers were welcomed from Jarvis Bay (NSW), Bathurst, and Elliott Heads. Pairs results: Rink 2 saw Bruce McCallum and Janet Arthur defeated by Scott Taylor and Paul Vass in a close match. Rink 4 went to Mick McClusker and Alex Bojack over Phil Marsden and Bob Pickard. Rink 3 saw Trevor Elton’s team defeat Geoff Taylor’s side by a solid margin. The Burdekin Roosters were on the road again last weekend, travelling to Charters Towers on Saturday with A Grade and Reserve Grade, and then to Bushland Beach on Sunday for the Under 19s. In their wisdom, the BLTD has created a separate draw for Under 19s, meaning clubs are being split up, as was the case with the Roosters last weekend. Charters Towers are always hard to beat on their home ground, and it was no exception, with the Roosters getting up in the dying stages to beat the Miners. A Grade coach Steve Lansley was a happy man after the match, saying his players showed plenty of character in coming from behind to beat the Miners in front of a huge crowd during Ladies Day. Lansley said the Burdekin Roosters produced another gritty come-from-behind performance to defeat the Towers Miners 28–20, overcoming a frustrating night of errors and missed opportunities. Dropped balls at crucial stages repeatedly handed the Miners valuable field position and piled pressure on the Roosters’ defence, making the task tougher than it needed to be. Despite the setbacks, the Roosters refused to panic and worked their way back through tough carries and relentless middle-third effort. The forwards laid the platform in the second half, dominating the physical battle and swinging momentum back in Burdekin’s favour. Best for the Roosters were Jye Olsen, Nemia Nawave and Lachlan Shepherd, all playing key roles in the hard-fought win. Jye was awarded Players’ Player. For the Roosters, Malik Ogameni, Terry Connors, Nash Beck, Lach Bachbach and Nemia Nawave scored tries, with Jye Olsen kicking four goals. In other A Grade results, Brothers beat Centrals 28–12, Souths beat Norths 42–18, and Western Lions upset Herbert River 30–18. Lack of numbers did not help the Roosters Reserve Grade, going down 20–12 to a full-strength Miners side. Coach Peter Horan said he travelled with only three on the bench, compared to the home side’s six, and “that makes a difference”. He estimated around 12 players were unavailable through injury. Harvey Horan was again a standout, with Jahi Starr, Luca Lago and Bokeem Moore Reid also strong performers. Ron Geia and Dylan Doak also contributed well. For the Roosters, Jahi Starr and Ron Geia scored tries, with Dylan Doak kicking two goals. In other Reserve Grade matches, Centrals beat Brothers 18–10, Souths defeated Norths 38–12, and Western Lions beat Herbert River 19–16. On Sunday, the Under 19s had a tough match against Norths at Bushy Beach, going down 18–14 in a topsy-turvy contest. Roosters coach Alf Cantarella said it was a difficult game, with only two on the bench and no bench left after injuries. The Roosters dug in but were overrun in the final 30 seconds. Jacob Drain captained the side well, with Chad Fraser named Man of the Match. “We were really down on players and didn’t get the two points,” Cantarella said. The Roosters also spent time down to 12 men after a send-off, with Norths scoring twice during that period. Jack Power, Callum Taiters and Romeo scored tries, with Chad Fraser adding a goal. In other Under 19 results, Brothers beat Centrals 24–4 and Herbert River defeated Western Lions 58–0. In the women’s competition, Western Lions defeated Charters Towers 62–0, Centrals beat Brothers 20–8, and Souths defeated Norths 56–4. This week, the RLTD has a rest round for all teams except Burdekin and Herbert River Under 19, who meet at Bendigo Park in Ayr on Friday night from 6.30pm in a delayed fixture. Fixtures resume Saturday 6 June in Ingham across three grades. Contributed with thanks to Brian Carnes

A small but thriving fishing club in the Burdekin is celebrating its 50th year in 2024. The Burdekin District Sportfishing club owes its longevity to a very strong family and social thread which runs alongside the competitive fishing aspect.
Monthly competitions culminate in a weigh-in and BBQ at a member’s residence which brings the whole group together in an informal and personal setting.
The competitive element is always present but members do share “secret” spots and are keen to encourage new and younger members. These days, club members often weigh in fish alongside their nurturing grandparents!
The club is marking its remarkable 50 years with a celebration at the Annual Presentation Night in mid-December. Any prospective or past members or anyone associated with the club through interclub competitions etc. who wish to take part in the celebrations can make contact through the club’s Facebook page and advise of their intention by the end of November.
Happy 50th Anniversary to the Burdekin District Sportfishing Club.

Junior social soccer re-kickstarted after the rain cancelled last Tuesday. The kids had a great afternoon playing with their friends both current and new.
Managers, please ensure you get your team on the field no matter how many kids there are, to get the game started on time, as the half an hour goes quickly. Also, Managers and parents who have been involved in soccer before, please do not be afraid to help out the kids who haven’t played before.
Just a couple of things also you can help the youth referees out this week. Please ensure your team is at least five metres back from kick-ins and goal kicks, and even the younger grades ask your team to come back to halfway if you are defending from a goal kick.

The Ayr Surf Club travelled to Mackay over the weekend for the 2024 North Australian Championships. North Aussies is a 3-day carnival with clubs from as north as Port Douglas to as far south as Mooloolaba uniting for one of Queensland's most iconic volunteer movements, Surf Life Saving. The Friday consisted of the Pool Rescue competition, where 12 Ayr competitors battled it out in the pool at the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex, demonstrating rescue techniques and skills against some very stiff competition. The first event in the pool saw 2 of the Ayr nippers, Charlotte Dale and Taylor Chapman, take silver in the Under 11 Female 100m Patient Tow. In the Under 13 Female 100m Patient Tow, Emma Jones & Milla Chapman took out the bronze medal. Taylor Chapman had a fantastic meet, also grabbing a gold in the U11 Female 50m Brick Carry and a silver in the U11 Female 100m Obstacle Race. Kristy Wassmuth continued from her World Championships Pool Rescue success winning the 40-49 years Female 100m Obstacle Race and getting silver in the 100m Manikin Tow. All competitors did incredibly well undertaking events that they don't normally have the opportunity to compete in.
The action then headed to Mackay Harbour Beach for the weekend, where 20 competitors took to the surf and the sand to tackle the usual Surf Sports Program. There were some incredible individual and team performances over the carnival with some special mentions to the U11 nippers at their first North Aussies experiencing competing against different clubs for the first time. Charlotte Dale in U11s took out both the board and iron person event gaining gold, with a bronze in her surf race. Taylor Chapman in U11s gained a bronze in her iron person, a silver in the 1km beach run. Charlotte & Taylor also took home a silver in their Board Rescue and combined with Alexandra Moloney in the board relay to grab the Bronze medal. Milla Chapman took gold in both the U13 Female beach sprint and beach flags and gained selection in the Queensland Country Team which heads to the Interbranch Championships later on in the year. Isla Chapman took out the gold for the U15 Female 2km beach run and the bronze in the beach sprint and was named as a reserve for the Queensland Country Team. Ryley Sartori took out Bronze in the U17 Female 2km beach run and Kristy Wassmuth took out bronze in both her Masters surf race and tube race.
For the first time in decades, Ayr sported 2 R&R (Rescue and Resuscitation) Teams to compete at the Championships. R&R is a more traditional event focusing on simulating rescue and resuscitation skills with precision and finesse. The teams had a great first carnival, after only taking up the event at the beginning of the month, and the U14/15 Team of Briella Wassmuth and Bella Lawry, managed to gain a Bronze medal, and the U13/14 Team of Charlotte Lawry and Emilee Wassmuth took out fourth. The next test of our lifesaving skills will take place in Ayr at the North Barrier Branch Surf Rescue Championships in November.

The evening featured one game of triples, where Joy Woods, Lyn Storrie, and "Rampaging" Ray Paneccasio triumphed over Margaret McLaughlan, Lyn Storrie, and Joe Yipnazar. The Town of Origin event on Sunday delivered an action-packed day of sports, with Home Hill securing the overall victory in thrilling fashion. The competition between the two towns featured cricket, netball, and rugby, each fiercely contested and filled with moments of excitement.
The day kicked off with cricket, where Ayr claimed a narrow victory in a match that went down to the wire. Ayr posted a solid score of 3/136, but Home Hill came close, finishing with 5/135. Despite strong batting from Home Hill’s top order, they fell just short of victory, handing Ayr the lead.
Next came the netball match, where Home Hill dominated from the start, bouncing back from the cricket loss. Their superior teamwork and precision shooting saw them pull away, finishing with a commanding 27-16 win over Ayr. This result brought the two towns level in the overall standings, setting the stage for a dramatic rugby decider.
The rugby match was a highlight of the day, providing a nail-biting finish that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The match was closely fought, with both teams exchanging points throughout. However, it was in the final six minutes that the drama truly unfolded. Ayr and Home Hill each scored a try in quick succession, but Home Hill held on to clinch a thrilling 24-22 victory. Their try sealed the win and secured the overall Town of Origin title for Home Hill.
Beyond the sports, the day featured plenty of fun for families and spectators. The tug-of-war during the rugby half time between the local children and the Harvest Festival Queens was a crowd favorite, with the kids coming out on top. Attendees were treated to delicious food from the Lions Club, while the Home Hill Community Kindergarten kept everyone refreshed with drinks and snacks. Kids enjoyed the jumping castle, and the Burdekin Cruisers Club displayed a selection of classic cars, adding to the community atmosphere.
It was a fantastic day of sport and entertainment, with Home Hill emerging as the Town of Origin champions for this year.

In Sunday’s Championship match, Chris Pearce, Joe Yipnazar, and Len Feeney faced off against Mick McCloskey, Allan Gairoch, and Peter Jorgensen in warm, windy conditions. Peter Jorgensen’s team dominated, securing their place in the next round - Peter might want to buy a lottery ticket after that performance!
The highly anticipated A & B Pairs match saw Jayson Farry and Jamie Woods take on Trevor Elton and Hugh Montgomery. A close contest for the first 10 ends, the Farry-Woods combination eventually proved too strong. In the next round, odds-on favourites Jayson Farry and Jamie Woods will face last year’s champions, Lloyd Shepherd and Gary Pearce.
Three games of triples were played on Sunday for social bowls with the results as follows:
• Norm Storrie, Vince Beitia, and "Rampaging" Ray Paneccasio defeated Dave Sheehan, Doug Kiehne, and Doug Robins.
• Ben Mills, Glenn Woodford, and Kev Collins drew against Gary Nosworthy, Jeff Taylor, and Leo Kenny.
• Ken Ferguson, Lyn Storrie, and Peter Henderson triumphed over Henry Hazel, Rob Jorgensen, and Richi Mau.
Congratulations to all the participants, and we look forward to the upcoming games!
Contributed with thanks to Lloyd Shepherd.
