A Night of Glitz and Glamour Expected At The 2024 Home Hill Harvest Festival Students’ Ball

October 3, 2024

This Friday, 4 October, the senior students of the Burdekin region will dazzle and shine as they ignite the atmosphere at the Burdekin Memorial Hall with gorgeous gowns and suave suits at the 2024 Home Hill Harvest Festival Students’ Ball.

An unforgettable evening, the Burdekin Memorial Hall will host a night filled with elegance, excitement and community spirit, bringing together students in years 10 to 12 from across the Burdekin district from 6pm to 11pm to enjoy plenty of social dancing, and making fantastic memories.

Each year the Home Hill Harvest Festival, in conjunction with the staff and P&C Committee of Home Hill State High School come together to organise one of the most anticipated events on the region’s calendar.

A beloved Burdekin tradition, the Students’ Ball Red Carpet will be ready to stage the glamorous arrivals from 6:15pm outside the Burdekin Memorial Hall in Home Hill, with the community invited to come along to watch the students arrive. The arrivals will also be livestreamed from 6:15pm on the Home Hill State High School Facebook page for those wishing to watch from home.

In an exciting announcement made earlier last month, the 2024 Home Hill Harvest Festival Students’ Ball will see James and Brittney Tamou join the judging panel, with many prizes set to be awarded to the Belle and Beau of the Ball, Best Dressed Couple, Sass, Swagger, Runner Ups and more.

James Tamou made his NRL debut with the North Queensland Cowboys in 2009 and made history as an integral member of the North Queensland’s historic maiden premiership in 2015.

With Brittney’s extensive background in the fashion industry, the pair’s attendance has fostered a wave of excitement across the region, with the Home Hill Harvest Festival Committee more than eager to welcome the pair to become a part of the iconic event.

“We are thrilled to announce that James and Brittney Tamou will be joining our judging panel for the evening,” shared Home Hill Harvest Festival Secretary Carlene Muilwyk.

“Their presence adds an extra sparkle to what promises to be an extraordinary event.”

Ashely Guy, a former Home Hill Harvest Festival Students’ Ball Belle will also be joining the judging panel for Friday’s event, and combining the talents and expertise of Ashley, James and Brittney, this year’s presentations are certainly set to impress.

“We are so excited to announce our 2024 judges,” shared Home Hill State High School teacher, Danielle Chappell.

“Brittney has an amazing fashion background which we are really excited for, and we were so absolutely stoked when she said she’d bring James along too.”

In keeping with the 2024 theme of the Home Hill Harvest Festival, Our Town, the Students’ Ball is set to stage an exquisite atmosphere and wonderful decorations to showcase the beauty and magic of “black snow, and liquid gold” that is the bountiful Burdekin.

The Hall will be adorned with an array of green, black and gold decorations, with sugar cane cuttings incorporated throughout the venue setting the scene for a wonderful night.

Home Hill State High School’s staff, students and P&C Committee along with the Home Hill Harvest Festival Committee and Queens, have been working tirelessly over the past couple of months to pull the event together, and cannot wait to see the community come together for the Red Carpet arrivals.

“We are really blessed with our local businesses and the support they have given us, and as a teacher, I am so thankful to the tireless efforts from all our staff, and the P&C as they have gone above and beyond for our students so that they can have this amazing opportunity each year,” added Danielle Chappell.

A Celebration Of Talent And Community

October 3, 2024

The Verve Dance Festival in Ayr is gearing up for its 6th annual event from Thursday, January 9th to Monday, January 13th, 2025. This five-day, four-night festival is North Queensland’s premier qualifying dance competition for the Showcase National Dance Championships, offering dancers the chance to compete at the prestigious finals on the Gold Coast.
Since its inception in 2020, Verve has grown significantly, expanding from 400 to over 1,000 entries across 169 sections. It provides a unique platform for dancers to showcase their talents while fostering community spirit. This family-friendly competition invites participants as young as three years old and promises a vibrant and supportive atmosphere.
One of the key highlights of Verve is its timing during school holidays, making it easier for participants to attend without missing school. Many families turn the competition into a mini holiday, benefiting local businesses in Ayr as motels and caravan parks fill up with attendees.
Verve’s success has been recognised, earning the distinction of being the first official qualifying event on the dance calendar for the Showcase National Dance Championships. Dancers placing in the top three at Verve automatically qualify for the national finals, making it a crucial event for aspiring performers.
The festival organisers, led by founder Machelle Slatcher, are seeking sponsorship to ensure the continued growth and success of the event. Sponsors will benefit from widespread exposure, both on-site and through social media, reaching hundreds of dancers and their families.

Young Stars Prepare For Debut

September 26, 2024

Aladdin Jr The Musical is on its way to the Lighthouse Theatre with the latest offering from the Burdekin Singers Theatre Company set to hit the stage in the coming weeks.

Made of an entirely school age cast, Aladdin’s youngest performer is just four years old and its oldest 17.

Amaia Blakey from Burdekin Singers says she is thrilled to see the children shine and that some are making their very first performance.

“This group of children are really special, there are a lot of new faces, they love performing and have even been practicing on their breaks,” she shared.

“For us, it’s all about growing the children and encouraging them so that one day they’ll be part of our senior productions.”

Adapted for a young audience and a young cast, this interpretation of Disney’s Aladdin will include many of your favourite sing-along songs, but the overall show will be shorter.

Each half is just 30 minutes long and the audience is welcome to enjoy a light supper during the intermission, which is kindly provided by the families of the cast members.

With just 80 seats available tickets are selling fast and can be purchased by following a link on the Burdekin Singers Facebook page.

There are eight shows in total, spread out over three weeks and many cast members share roles with between 30 and 40 juniors appearing in total.

Amaia said that, with the recent upgrades, the Lighthouse Theatre offers an incredibly professional setting, and she is looking forward to welcoming the community through the doors in October.

WHAT: Aladdin
WHERE: Lighthouse Theatre

Local bands and Triple T provided the soundtrack for the day, while the smell of fairy floss and Dagwood dogs filled the air.

After months of dedicated preparation, Ayr State High School brought the spirit of the 1970s to life with their spectacular performance of Disco Inferno at the Burdekin Theatre last month.

Audiences were transported back to the vibrant and groovy 1970s as the school's talented students delivered a dazzling show filled with colour, music, and energy.

Theatre week officially kicked off on Saturday, 17 August, when the set, props, and costumes were moved into the Burdekin Theatre, marking the start of an intense week of rehearsals and excitement.

As opening night drew closer, students and staff alike began to feel the growing anticipation.

Early performances were shared with Ayr State High School students on Thursday and feeder primary schools on the Friday.

By the time the official curtain rose on the evening of Friday 23rd August, the cast was greeted by thunderous applause and cheers, setting the tone for a weekend of unforgettable performances.

The three main shows at the Burdekin Theatre saw audiences grooving along to iconic 70s hits, immersing themselves in a world of glitter, flares, and platform shoes. The combination of a witty script and an electrifying musical score had the crowd laughing, singing, and fully engaged with the lively characters on stage.

As the final curtain fell, it became clear that the production had been a resounding success.

Ms. Courtney Carrigan, Producer of the production, was thrilled with the performances and is already looking forward to next year.

“Congratulations to all cast, crew, and band – you were absolutely amazing, and we are very proud of your efforts!” she said.

“Thank you to all our sponsors along with the Burdekin community for continuing to support our school and The Arts.
