Wheels In Motion - Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub

Wheels In Motion Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub Work on the Burdekin’s new state-of-the-art pump track is racing toward the finish line, with construction at Anzac Park officially scheduled to break ground this April. The project, which was first announced in June 2025 as the “hero” of Burdekin Shire Council’s $2.8 million investment in regional parks, is nearing the end of its design phase following two rounds of community consultation. Situated within the former junior soccer field adjacent to the existing skate park, the facility is designed to cater to everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals across scooters, BMX bikes, skateboards, and mountain bikes. The project is backed by $760,000 from the Queensland Government’s 2024-27 Works for Queensland (W4Q) program. Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the final design was a direct reflection of local input. “The Anzac Park Pump Track is a great example of how community feedback helps Council deliver facilities that meet local needs and encourage people of all ages to be active,” Mayor Dalle Cort said. “Pump tracks are designed to be inclusive and accessible, catering for a range of users including bikes, scooters and skateboards. This facility will add to Anzac Park’s existing recreational offerings and provide a safe, purpose-built space for the entire community to enjoy.” The track forms a major part of a broader shire-wide recreational upgrade, providing a dedicated space for wheeled sports that complements the existing park infrastructure. Member for Burdekin Dale Last said the project highlighted the benefits of making the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture under the Crisafulli Government. “Our government has made the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture that allows local government to put forward projects based on their consultation with local people and groups,” Mr Last said. “That means that we, as the state government, can deliver funding to support local jobs and local projects that make our communities better places to live.” Council confirmed that construction will commence in April, with further updates to be provided as the site transforms into a key recreational asset for the region.

Meet Junior Ambassador Hunter Oar

July 25, 2025

Representing the Ayr Golf Club At The 2025 Burdekin Water Festival

After playing golf for as long as she can remember, 11-year-old Hunter Oar was over the moon when she was asked to represent the Ayr Golf Club as a 2025 Burdekin Water Festival Junior Ambassador!

“I’m really proud to be representing the Ayr Golf Club as a junior ambassador for the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival as I’ve been playing golf since I was little, and I’m excited to help promote junior golf in our community as part of this amazing journey,” shared Hunter.

“I’m very grateful to the Ayr Golf Club for choosing me as their Ambassador!”

Hunter fondly remembers watching and supporting her aunty as she served as an Ambassador in the 2022 Burdekin Water Festival, and it’s these memories that made saying yes to the Ayr Golf Club so easy.

“I had so much fun helping her with her fundraising and decorating her float and being a part of it made me really want to get involved myself one day - so I’m very happy that I now get the chance!”

When Hunter isn’t on the green, you’ll find her on the netball courts, hanging out with her friends, or more recently, rehearsing for her school’s musical! A busy girl, Hunter has thoroughly enjoyed all that the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival has thrown at her so far, and she cannot wait for what’s yet to come.

“I’m really looking forward to all the events with my fellow ambassadors - they’re such a great group of people, and I’ve loved getting to know them,” Hunter added.

“I’m especially excited about the grand parade, my float, and seeing all the other amazing floats on the day!”

Meet Senior Ambassador Eliza Worlein

July 24, 2025

Representing The Rotary Club of Ayr At The 2025 Burdekin Water Festival

Eliza Worlein is no stranger to the spotlight, and after being part of the Burdekin Water Festival as a Junior Ambassador many years ago, accepting the Rotary Club of Ayr’s invitation to represent them as a Senior Ambassador in 2025 was one of the easiest decisions she could have made!

“I am representing the Rotary Club of Ayr, an organisation that is well known in the Burdekin community for their generosity and tireless efforts to carry out humanitarian work throughout the globe,” shared Eliza.

“I feel very fortunate to be their ambassador for 2025 and do what I can to give back to an organisation that does so much for everyone else.”

Currently in her second year of Bachelor of Media and Communications, Eliza also works as a music teacher at Perform Music Studios and enjoys spending her downtime with her friends and family.

Annually, the Burdekin Water Festival has held a special place in Eliza’s heart (and calendar), and as a 2025 Senior Ambassador, she’s beyond excited and eager to dive headfirst into all that’s to come over the coming months.

“Growing up I remember looking forward to the Water Festival every year and the excitement that came along with it and in all honesty, not much has changed - I still very much look forward to the arrival of the Water Festival these days as well to see the ambassadors and to celebrate the abundance of water that we are so lucky to have as a community," she added.

"As an ambassador, I am looking forward to developing friendships with not only my other fellow five Senior Ambassadors, but with the Junior Ambassadors as well! I can’t wait to go to all of the different events that are planned and see the different ideas that everyone has for their fundraising. I’m also looking forward to seeing all of the floats at the Mardi Gras and can’t wait for the rest of the Burdekin Water Festival Journey ahead!"

July 18, 2025

Recently, eight of the Burdekin District’s small schools came together for a day of fun, friendship and frivolity with an end of term Fun Day like no other at Clare State School.  To celebrate the end of the first semester, students were treated to a myriad of activities to complete and participate in at their leisure. The jumping castle, giant slide and merry-go-round were a huge hit with all ages, even the adults snuck in a few goes! Other activities on the day included: craft activities, a disco, learning to play brass instruments, volleyball, obstacle courses, Lego constructions, soccer and garden games, such as Giant Jenga and Giant Connect Four. The music was pumping throughout the school grounds all day and there were plenty of smiles on everyone’s faces. A great day was had by all.

July 17, 2025

The Burdekin Uniting Chruch's Gospel Music Festival is returning to town on the 27th of July, with familiar favourites alongside some promising new musicians set to make this year’s event another memorable one.

From 4-7pm, the Burdekin Theatre Forecourt will double as a community celebration space, playing host to an evening of uplifting and family-friendly Gospel music.

Returning to the lineup of talent this year is Dan Warlow. Having cultivated a strong local reputation through his catchy tunes based on biblical truth, Warlow brings a high-energy, engaging performance that resonates with audiences of all ages—especially children.

Also featured is retired minister Lynton Allen, who delivers short Christian messages while painting live on stage.

The program will also showcase a range of local performers, including soloists David Lequerica and Yvonne Cole, a trio performance by the Woods family, and sets by the Burdekin Ukulele Group, Home Hill Choral Society, Burdekin Community Church, Gospel Outreach Church, and Burdekin Christian School. Lequerica will also compere the event.

Admission is free, with seating provided—although attendees are advised to bring rugs and jackets for comfort. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, including a barbecue by the Scouts, nachos from Melinda Paone, drinks sold by local chaplains, and coffee and sweets from Sweetsville.

The Lower Burdekin Scouts Go to LEAP Camp

July 14, 2025

Four members of the Lower Burdekin Scout Group recently attended the 2025 LEAP Camp, held from June 29 to July 5 at Bluewater, north of Townsville. They joined 140 Scouts aged 9 to 18, along with 40 adult leaders from Scout Groups stretching from Cairns to Mackay to Brisbane, for a week focused on Leadership, Empowerment, Adventure.

Throughout the week, the Scouts worked together in teams (called Patrols) of 5–6, cooking meals, camping in tents, and supporting one another through a series of hands-on challenges. Older Scouts aged 15–18 had the chance to take to the skies with a flying experience in Charters Towers, as well as tackle abseiling adventures. All participants got involved in a wide range of activities including first aid training, screen printing, archery, rock climbing, and navigating with a compass and map. They also enjoyed paddle boarding and beach games, conquered a challenge course, built and cooked on campfires, explored Townsville during a scavenger hunt, and spent time at the Billabong Sanctuary. The week wrapped up with a vibrant Scout market and a movie night under the stars.

The experience provided a valuable opportunity for young people to build resilience, teamwork and life skills in a fun, adventurous environment.

The Lower Burdekin Scouts meet on a Thursday night in 12th Ave Home Hill, 5–7 years meet 4-00 to 5-00pm and 8-18 years meet 5-30 to 7-30pm. People can come along for four weeks free to Try Scouting by contacting Rikki on 0419 104 035.

Free Burdekin Concert Showcases Rising Stars of Chamber Music

July 3, 2025

The soaring sounds of saxophones will echo through the Burdekin Theatre this July as part of a free community concert showcasing the next generation of classical music talent.

The Pathways Outreach Concert, hosted by the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM), will take place from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday, July 31, offering locals the chance to experience live chamber music performed by the Andromeda Sax Quartet—a talented young ensemble handpicked through AFCM’s prestigious Fellowship Program.

The concert, which forms part of a regional tour spanning Townsville, Proserpine, Ingham and Charters Towers, features a lively and diverse program of music from composers such as J.S. Bach and Philip Glass, performed on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.

According to Nick Duff, Program Manager of AFCM’s Pathways initiative, the Fellowship is awarded each year to the ensemble with the most potential, selected from a group of emerging musicians and conservatorium students who participate in an intensive two-week masterclass residency under the guidance of world-class performers.

“They work closely with our international artists, then perform a showcase concert at the end of the festival,” Duff explained. “The ensemble that shines brightest becomes our Fellowship group the following year—this year, that’s the Andromeda Sax Quartet.”

Comprising postgraduate students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the quartet will also visit local schools, including Ayr State High School, running workshops for music students and concert bands.

The Fellowship program, supported by The Ian Potter Foundation and Wilmar Sugar, is part of AFCM’s broader mission to create professional pathways for emerging artists while making high-quality music more accessible to regional communities.

Duff described the repertoire as “easy listening” and the atmosphere as welcoming and cross-generational, appealing to both chamber music lovers and newcomers alike.

“You’ll often see retirees sitting next to high school kids. It’s a beautiful picture of people of all ages enjoying music together—watching the torch being passed down.”

Duff says the concert really is for everyone, no matter your age or musical taste.

“The audience is often a big mix—retirees, younger people, school students,” he said. “It’s a really nice mix of generations and people getting to see the torch being passed down, and everyone coming together to enjoy music.”

The Pathways Outreach Concert is free to attend and takes place at the Burdekin Theatre on Thursday, July 31, from 2pm to 3pm.

July 2, 2025

With the announcements of both Junior and Senior Ambassadors trickling throughout our pages over the past few weeks, the excitement among the community ahead of the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival has continued to build, and with so many events on the calendar, how could you not be bursting with anticipation?!

After a heartwarming come back in 2024, the Burdekin Water Festival returned to its rightful place within the community in spectacular form as one of the state’s longest running celebrations. Continuing on, the Burdekin Water Festival Committee has promised to keep bringing back the beloved proceedings of the historic celebration, reviving activities, competitions, and events dating all the way back to the festival’s 1958 debut.

Maria Populin Burdekin Water Festival Community Launch
With so much to come, the celebrations will officially commence this Friday, the 4th of July with the magical Maria Populin Burdekin Water Festival Community Launch at Queen Street’s iconic Populin’s Hall! The evening will begin at 6:30pm sharp and promises to be an unforgettable night overflowing with inspiring young talent as the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival Junior and Senior Ambassadors take to the spotlight for the very first time.

Under this year’s adventurous theme of “Bon Voyage – Roam the Globe”, attendees can expect to admire destination inspired decorations whilst enjoying a fabulous Fashion Parade were Junior and Senior Ambassadors will model clothing from Glen Dell Fashion Boutique, The Q Street Collective, Wild East, and Swerve Surf & Ski!

Just as infamous as it was 67 years ago, the highly anticipated and locally treasured Burdekin Water Festival Grand Parade & Mardi Gras will make a spectacular splash in Queen Street on Saturday, the 6th of September from 4:30pm onwards!

A spectacle in itself, the Grand Parade will host a fleet of floats to leave onlookers breathless, decorated down to the towbars in the 2025 “Bon Voyage – Roam The Globe” theme and showcasing the talents of local community groups, businesses, schools and organisations for all to see.

Afterwards, the centre of Ayr will come alive with amusement rides, a classic side-show alley, face painting, Melville’s Petting Zoo, live entertainment, and market stalls, with the debut of Burdekin Eats set to treat the entire family to a plethora of international culinary delights. In recognition of this year’s theme, the Burdekin Water Festival Committee have decided to transform the Mardi Gras into a cultural feast for the senses with plans to fill the street from end to end with a wave of things to see, activities to do, and treats to eat!

Much to the community’s delight, the festival’s Tug-O-War Competition will see teams battle for the title of grand champion once again, and additional winning announcements of the Garden Competition, Window Competition and the drawing of the Major Raffle will also take place later in the evening.

Burdekin Art Society 2025 Art Exhibition Set To Impress & Inspire

June 26, 2025

Over half a century of creativity underpins the success of the Burdekin Art Society, a celebrated organisation, focused on nurturing local talent and highlighting artistic expression across the Burdekin Shire.

54 years ago, the late Cecilia Spottiswood and a passionate group of artists and community members came together to establish the Burdekin Art Society, which still to this day, continues to bring creativity to life from its mural-covered gallery at 154 Macmillan Street, Ayr.

The space doubles as a workspace and vibrant gallery, proudly showcasing a rotating display of members' works across a variety of mediums, with the building hosting weekly meetings every Tuesday from 9:30am to 12pm. In addition to weekly gatherings, the Society hosts a series of weekend seminars throughout the year delivered by accredited trainers to offer budding and experienced artists alike the chance to refine their skills and explore new techniques.

However, the group’s highlight of the year undoubtedly is the Annual Burdekin Art Society Art Exhibition, which will make it’s 2025 return to the Burdekin Theatre Foyer from Saturday, the 30th of August, with a wonderful catered Opening Night commencing from 7pm. The showcase will then culminate the evening of the 6th of September, coinciding with the excitement of the Burdekin Water Festival Mardi Gras and Parade.

Attracting more than 200 entries from across the state, the exhibition stands as a major event on the regional arts calendar. With generous prize money on offer across a range of mediums, including acrylic, oil, mixed media, pastels, watercolour, and pencil or pen, artists compete across several categories, including a dedicated section for Burdekin locals and a popular children’s division.

A fantastic opportunity to showcase the region’s creativity, the exhibition annually connects the wider arts community with one another whilst treating local residents to enjoy an impressive and diverse free art display. Supported by generous sponsorship from businesses across the Burdekin and Townsville, the exhibition not only boosts the profile of local artists but also invites visitors to experience the culture and charm of the Burdekin Shire.

Preparations have been well underway since April, with Exhibition Coordinator, Joanne Barbagallo leading a fantastic committee of dedicated volunteers to coordinate sponsors, prepare entry forms, and manage logistics ahead of the highly anticipated week-long showcase.

Whether you’re a creative soul or simply a lover of the arts, the Burdekin Art Society invites you to join in the celebration and attend the August Opening Night to witness the true talents of both local and travelling artists.

With passion, paint, and a whole lot of community spirit, there’s always something inspiring happening on Macmillan Street and to find out more, email burdekinartsocietyinc@gmail.com.

A Record-Breaking Burdekin Show

June 26, 2025

The Burdekin Show Committee Thanks You

The Burdekin Show returned this year livelier than ever, drawing a great crowd that showed just how much the community loves this event. The day was packed with entertainment and fun, proving once again why it’s such a highlight on the local calendar.

Burdekin Show Committee President Chris Lyne said that the committee are eternally grateful for not only the work of volunteers and helpers, but also the support shown by the community at the 2025 event.

"We're extremely grateful for the all sponsors and the Burdekin Council for helping to make this year's show possible," he said. "But also our volunteers—it couldn't have happened without them."

Months of hard work and late nights from the committee volunteers went into making the day happen, bringing the community together to enjoy one of the Burdekin's more modern local traditions. Lyne said providing that connection point for the community is what it's all about.

"The reason we exist is to serve the locals. It's detrimental to the community if these events don't happen," he said.

For Lyne, it's this connection that truly bonds communities in ways that lie beneath the surface.

"I hear a lot about 'resilience' in the community, and I never really understood what it meant until this year, when I realised it's about having a place for the community to get together and form connections with each other," said Lyne. "Then, in the tough times, you have people to lean on."

This year's Burdekin show not only brought the community together, but did it in the most fun-filled way possible. So, thank you, members of the Burdekin, for supporting the event the only way you know how, and thank you especially to the committee for putting on a show for the ages.

Rags To Runway Returns To The Burdekin

June 19, 2025

Coco Chanel. Tommy Hilfiger. Gianni Versace—Some of the most prominent names in the modern fashion industry, and all built on the back of humble, hard-working trailblzers born far from the limelight.

And who’s to say the next one won’t be from the Burdekin?

On Saturday, July 12, the region’s top local fashionistas will be showcasing their creative knack at St Stephen's Greek Orthodox Hall in this year’s Burdekin Rags to Runway.

The hallmark fashion event of the Burdekin—now in its fifth year—will see entrants from across the Burdekin strut their stuff across a range of categories, each with its own budgetary parameters.

Among prizes up for grabs are the Ladies Race Wear Budget Challenge (Maximum Spend $40.00), the Evening Wear Budget Challenge (Maximum Spend $30.00), the Budget Challenge (Maximum spend $30.00), the Open Section—Any Second-hand Garment/Fabric Items Re-modelled, and Junior Sections—Ages up to 13 years, and ages 14 – 18 years.

Event coordinator Sandi Milani says that the scoring will be based predominantly on creativity rather than technical execution.

“It’s not about how well you sew—we don’t look inside the garments or anything—we’re looking at the creativity—what they’ve used and how they’ve repurposed it,” she says.

For Milani, who played an integral role in the event’s inception, it’s about trying to get people to think outside the box.

“Most times the entrants will use three or four items of clothing and repurpose it into one item,” she added.

“It’s been really interesting seeing the ideas and how people have taken their items and transformed them into something else that’s more modern and wearable.”

Milani hopes that the event can shift attitudes around waste and fast fashion:

“What we’re encouraging people to do is to go to the op shops, or maybe a fashion store that has a throw-out rack, and to repurpose and restyle items that don’t seem fashionable.

“It’s really about trying to get people to think ‘just because it’s out of fashion, doesn’t meant it has to be thrown away."

This year’s event will feature more entertainment, market stalls showcasing local art, and prizes awarded after each section, and with around 150 spectators expected, Rags to Runway continues to grow—also welcoming 25 entrants this year, up from just eight in its first year.

You can grab your tickets by emailing artipeople@yahoo.com or at 170 Arts on the Avenue—beside Ashworth’s Rock Shop Home Hill.
