One of the Burdekin’s most beloved community events is back—and organisers say this year’s Burdekin Show is shaping up to be bigger, brighter and more jam-packed than ever.

“It's a proper family fun day out,” says Brendan Kolb, Vice President of the Burdekin Show Association. “All the entertainment’s free—Timmy the Train, the duck races, the Melville’s Animal Farm, everything in the ring. It’s all included. The only thing people need to pay for is the food and the rides.”

Held over a single day, the Burdekin Show is a highlight of the local calendar. With fireworks, exhibitions, equestrian events and the wide-ranging Side Show Alley, it’s set to be a high-energy day for the whole family with that distinct, customary Burdekin flavour.

A Family-Fun Spectacle With Community At Its Core

Kolb explains that while the festivities may only last one day, the hard work and preparation stretches over many months.

“As soon as one show ends, we’re already planning for the next. It’s non-stop,” he says. “It’s a volunteer-run event, so there’s a lot of late nights and hard work from the committee that people don’t see. But it’s all worth it when the gates open and people start coming through.”

Last year’s attendance was impacted by heavy rainfall, but with clearer skies forecast for this year, organisers are hopeful of returning to the typical crowd of around 5,000 locals and visitors.

“We’re definitely hoping for clear blue skies this time around,” Kolb laughs. “Night-time’s always spectacular—when the lights flick on in Side Show Alley and the whole place just comes alive.”

This year’s program includes plenty of favourites alongside some new show-stoppers. The Flare Action Sports team will bring their Roly Poly quad bikes to the main ring, and the evening will culminate with the always-popular Firework Spectacular. Other highlights include camel rides, motorbike freestyle trials, mower races, dachshund races, the Precision Reptiles display, and a visit from Muster Dogs special guest Steve Elliot.

And then of course, there’s the food: “Good steak burger, fairy floss, toffee apple... can’t go wrong,” Kolb says.

But beyond the attractions and eats, it’s the community spirit that gives the Burdekin Show its enduring charm.

“If it wasn’t for the Burdekin community, we simply wouldn’t have a show,” he says. “Every year we get flooded with phone calls in the lead-up—people asking how they can help, if there’s space for a stall. It’s actually pretty overwhelming in the best way.”

That community support flows through every part of the day, from the local schools and clubs that get involved, to the exhibition halls filled with handmade and homegrown entries from children and adults alike.

“The amount of effort that goes into the exhibits—the art, the photography, the cooking, the flowers—it’s amazing. It’s a real showcase of local talent,” Kolb says. “The school displays are a big highlight too. It’s great seeing the kids’ work on show, and they get so much out of being involved.”

“The show’s got it all—rides, food, displays, action, animals, fireworks… even the six-bar equestrian event, which is always a standout. I can’t wait.”

The 71st Giru Show Returns this September

The annual Giru Show will roll into town for one action packed day on Saturday, the 13th of September and with a cane train load of activities on offer, this year’s extravaganza certainly isn’t one to miss!

Introduced to the community 72 years ago, the inaugural 1953 Giru Show Committee was led by President Mr Tom Enever, Secretary Mrs W.B. Lewis and Treasurer Mr C. Hungerford, and with the absence of the event in 1958 and 2020, 2025 will host the 71st rendition of the beloved community celebration. With such a rich history in the Giru community and Burdekin Shire as a whole, the event stands as a celebration of local talent and attracts a high number of former residents who return each year to catch up with one another and remise on past times with old friends.

September’s festivities will commence from midday and a formal Opening Ceremony will be held at 3pm in honour of Life Member, Betty Corradi, with Life Members Gladys Blee, Lena Clements, John Keith Lyons and Ennio Gazziola set to be in attendance.

“Our life members are among a long list of dedicated locals who have over the years, worked tirelessly without seeking recognition, to produce a community event that continues to this day,” shared Giru Show and School of Arts Inc. Treasurer, Kim Chambers.

“Our current committee prides itself on continuing the tradition of an old-fashioned country show.”

Brolga Park’s Pavillion Hall exists as the event’s centrepiece where local talent is spotlighted, year after year with local gardeners, photographers, artists, chefs, needleworkers and crafters warmly encouraged to exhibit the fruits of their labour for all to admire.

“In an age where interest in these areas has waned, we still manage to produce an impressive exhibition,” added Kim.

A plethora of market stalls, food and drink stands, machinery and vintage car displays, sugar cane crops, live band, lolly drop, an animal farm and exciting games and show rides annually fill the grounds, contributing to an exhilarating and vibrant atmosphere for patrons of all ages to enjoy.

“Our committee always hopes the next show will be bigger and better than the last and we continually seek new ideas to breathe life into an event that has serviced the community for more than seven decades,” Kim noted.

“We owe that to the first committee members who, many years ago, planted the seed for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Local Cane Cutter Triumphs At Sweet Days Hot Nights Signature Event

Sweet Days Hot Nights took over the Burdekin with two days of music, food, culture, and thrilling cane-cutting action. Festival-goers enjoyed lively performances, delicious eats, and unique community traditions like dances and songs.

The symbolic First Fire marked the start of the event and the two days saw the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships heat up, with local Mark Vass winning the final in just 14.08 minutes.

With a smoky BBQ cook-off, live music, and St Colman’s Catholic School winning the Sweetest School title, the festival once again proved it’s one of the Burdekin’s top annual events.

More than 40 visitors turned out on Sunday 25 May to celebrate the opening of the Textile and Art Exhibition at 170 Arts on the Avenue, Home Hill—showcasing the work of long-time local artists Coral and Billie-Lee.

Guests were greeted with a glass of wine or fruit punch as they explored the collection, which featured everything from detailed paintings to inventive textile creations. The afternoon opened   with a warm welcome by Sandi Milani, President of the Burdekin Artisan Community Association Inc, who introduced the two featured artists before they addressed the crowd to thank them for their support. Attendees then enjoyed a relaxed afternoon tea among the artworks.

Both artists are deeply embedded in the region’s creative community. Coral, a founding member of the Burdekin Artisan Community Association and long-standing member of the Burdekin Art Society, has spent years developing her painting practice under the guidance of numerous visiting tutors. Her award-winning work has been recognised in competitions and has even made its way to international buyers in countries like Brazil.

Billie-Lee brought a unique and eclectic mix of textile works to the exhibition, drawing on her diverse skillset in felting, embroidery, crochet, and fibre art. Her approach embraces sustainability, repurposing everything from discarded fabric to everyday household items like photo frames and styrofoam cups—giving them new life through creativity.

Beyond exhibiting, Billie-Lee plays an active role in fostering the local arts scene. Every Thursday, she hosts “Crafty Thursdays” at 170 Arts on the Avenue—a casual, open-to-all drop-in session where locals can bring unfinished craft projects, seek advice, or simply enjoy a cuppa and a chat with like-minded creatives.

Sunday’s exhibition opening was not just a celebration of individual talent, but a reflection of the Burdekin’s rich artistic spirit and the strong community that continues to nurture it.

For those who missed the opening, the exhibition remains on display at 170 Arts on the Avenue, offering another chance to view the work of two artists who continue to inspire creativity in the region.

Johnny Cash Tribute Show Gears Up

The most authentic Johnny Cash show is about to hit the Burdekin for the first time ever this Saturday, May 24, with the crew entering the final phase of their preparations before lighting up the Burdekin Theatre.

“It is quite the production, so getting together and rehearsing and going through what we're going to do is really important,” says Joanne Caligiuri, who stars as June Carter alongside her husband Mark, playing the Man in Black.

The Caligiuris, along with their tight-knit band, have taken their Johnny Cash tribute show on the road all across Australia, spending years fine-tuning their tribute show into what Joanne calls a “well-oiled machine.”

Joanne says it’s the group's closeness—both personally and geographically—that helps them perfect their performance and continue improving the show.

“We’re quite lucky in a sense that our band all live near each other, so we always get together before a show, go through what we're going to do, the songs—and actually a few new songs the guys have been working on as well,” she says.

“We've been doing this for a long time. Both (Mark and I) have been performers most of our lives, and we're not complacent. We don't just sort of do a show and leave it. We are always working on it.”

The show mixes popular tracks like Ring of Fire and Jackson with lesser-known gems and a taste of Cash’s gospel and darker material.

“There are certain songs that are very, very wordy—Johnny Cash used to love to write many, many verses,” Joanne says. “We sort of cover different areas like the earlier Cash recordings, gospel, and a slightly darker side to Cash. We always make sure we prepare for that part particularly because some of the words are quite intense.”

It’s this attention to detail that makes the show stand out from the rest.

“We’re very sincere entertainers—we genuinely care about the audience and making sure we give them the best possible experience,” Joanne says. “We’ve watched a lot of Johnny Cash and June Carter, and while we don’t mimic them, we do take on those roles to help the audience feel that connection.”

With final rehearsals wrapped and the setlist locked in, the group is excited to share their passion for Cash’s music with a new audience.

“It’s such a joy for us to bring this show to different towns,” Joanne says. “Every place has its own energy, and we feed off that. We all look into the towns that we haven't been to before to look around and see what makes it special.”

From the 7th to the 18th of this month, the local community flocked to the Burdekin theatre to witness the next generation of local talent strut their stuff.

In its 41st year, the annual event saw 2600 talented children from all over North Queensland showcase their skills across a range of disciplines and age groups—from poetry and choral performances to classical piano and traditional Highland dance.

“We’re very happy with the amount of entries and how it went,” said the secretary of the event, Cheryl Platt. “The contestants were ever so excited, and we had a heap of new people come in and get to experience the Burdekin Theatre.”

Platt says the event couldn’t have happened without the help of the 300-plus strong volunteer crew: “Without our volunteers we’d be in the water. It’s totally run on volunteers—we need them.”

If one thing can be said for sure, it’s that the Burdekin Shire loves its annual Ladies Day celebrations! After another stellar year of Ladies Day events in 2024, the Burdekin Roosters, Burdekin Football Club, and Burdekin Rugby Union Canetoads have taken a place on calendars across the community, confirming 2025 will be a year to remember with three wonderful weekends on the horizon!

The first club to take a seat at the 2025 table will be the Burdekin Rugby Union Canetoads! Saturday the 12th of July will stage one of the club’s most exotic events yet as just last week, the Canetoads unveiled this year’s ladies’ day will capture the undeniable magic of Greece with the theme, A Moment in Mykonos. Tickets are priced at $85 each which includes a fabulous four-hour drink package, ten lucky raffle tickets, delicious finger food, and of course, outstanding live entertainment at Jones Street’s Casalengo Fields!

Since asking the community to save the date all the way back in late February, excitement and anticipation has continued to blossom ahead of the Burdekin Roosters 2025 Ladies’ Day! Set for Saturday the 19th of July, additional details regarding the theme and ticket sales are yet to be announced, yet events of the past have been nothing short of jaw dropping at the club’s very own Burdekin Rugby Park.

Now last, but certainly not least, one of Burdekin Football Club’s largest annual celebrations will take place at Beach Road’s International Park on Saturday the 9th of August! The club hopes to emulate the contagious energy of Shania Twain herself with the energetic theme of “Let’s Go Girls”, asking ladies to dress top to toe in their best denim and white wardrobe delights. Although specific ticket details have not been confirmed, the club has promised August’s event will treat attendees to a night overflowing with cocktails and the opportunity to sing and dance the night away to the sounds of live entertainment.

With each of the dates deservingly holding a space on everyone’s calendars, you certainly don’t want to miss out on your chance to grab a ticket to three of the region’s most celebrated events so keep an eye on the club’s socials to be the first to know when ticket sales kick off!

Excitement is building across the Burdekin as ducks and humans alike ready themselves for the Norm Perry Memorial Duck Race, set to take over Plantation Park this Sunday, May 18.

Now in its 16th year, the much-loved community event will see hundreds of bright yellow ducks hit the creek for a thrilling 130-metre float to glory. The spectacle kicks off at 11am near the Don Moss Archway, with cash prizes on offer for the fastest five finishers—including $1000 and the coveted 2025 Quack Cup for first place.

Beyond the thrills of the race itself, there’s plenty happening on dry land, with the Rotary Club of Ayr putting on a full morning of family fun. From children’s activities, live music from the Burdekin Brass Band, and food stalls offering everything from snags and hot chips to cold drinks and ice cream, the morning will have something for everyone.

For those feeling creative, the event’s beloved costume competitions are back—and not just for ducks. Prizes are up for grabs for both the best dressed duck and the best dressed human—think Met Gala. But duck themed. And creekside in Ayr.

A statement duck-themed outfit might earn you $50, while a well-dressed duck could make you up to $100 richer. For those ducks that fall behind the pack in both the race and style stakes, five lucky duck draws give everyone—even those without a speedy swimmer—a shot at a win.

Ducks are $50 each, with a buy-three-get-one-free deal still running in the lead-up to race day. Whether you’ve already secured your duck or you’re thinking of grabbing one on the day, it’s the perfect excuse to head down to Plantation Park and join the fun.

Funds raised this year will go toward supporting the Burdekin Woodcrafts Association and the Burdekin Men’s Shed—two local groups doing great work in the community.

With costumes, chaos, and a creek full of ducks, it’s set to be another unforgettable race day.

St. Stephen’s Greek Community will once again bring the colour, flavour and rhythm of Greek culture to the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, offering festival-goers a taste of tradition through food, music and dance.

The Home Hill-based group has been part of the Burdekin’s multicultural fabric for generations, with roots tracing back to early Greek migrants seeking opportunity in Australia.

“Our ancestors migrated to Australia to have more opportunities, for the betterment of their families,” says committee member Isodia Scuderi. “They began sharing our religion, culture and customs… and today we continue to share this history within our shire, state and wonderful country of Australia.”

A major milestone in that history came in 1961, when St. Stephen’s Greek Orthodox Church was consecrated by Archbishop Ezekiel. It became a hub for local worshippers and a gathering place for the broader Greek community. The adjacent Hellenic Memorial Parish Hall was later built to honour the pioneers of the Greek Orthodox faith in the region.

This year, St. Stephen’s will return to the festival with its signature loukoumades—crispy golden honey puffs served hot and sweet—as well as traditional dance performances and their ever-popular plate-smashing competition. “There’s a real joy in seeing people from all backgrounds taste Greek food for the first time, clap along to the music, or even try a few dance steps,” says Scuderi. “It creates this beautiful sense of connection between cultures.”

She says the group takes pride in its role not just as performers, but as cultural storytellers. “It’s not just about the food or the dancing… it’s about sharing a piece of our history, family stories, and identity with the wider Burdekin community.”

For newcomers, Scuderi says the event is a sensory celebration: “Music of different cultural groups, food stalls lined up, the air thick with the smells of dozens of cuisines… dancing, performances, people from all backgrounds. It feels like a big global party.”

The Burdekin Cultural Fair will take place on Friday, 30 May, from 6 pm to 11 pm, with gates opening at 5 pm. Visitors can look forward to an evening filled with cultural performances, multi-cultural cuisine, and free children’s activities, topped off with the spectacular First Fire, marking the season's first cane fire.
