Wheels In Motion Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub Work on the Burdekin’s new state-of-the-art pump track is racing toward the finish line, with construction at Anzac Park officially scheduled to break ground this April. The project, which was first announced in June 2025 as the “hero” of Burdekin Shire Council’s $2.8 million investment in regional parks, is nearing the end of its design phase following two rounds of community consultation. Situated within the former junior soccer field adjacent to the existing skate park, the facility is designed to cater to everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals across scooters, BMX bikes, skateboards, and mountain bikes. The project is backed by $760,000 from the Queensland Government’s 2024-27 Works for Queensland (W4Q) program. Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the final design was a direct reflection of local input. “The Anzac Park Pump Track is a great example of how community feedback helps Council deliver facilities that meet local needs and encourage people of all ages to be active,” Mayor Dalle Cort said. “Pump tracks are designed to be inclusive and accessible, catering for a range of users including bikes, scooters and skateboards. This facility will add to Anzac Park’s existing recreational offerings and provide a safe, purpose-built space for the entire community to enjoy.” The track forms a major part of a broader shire-wide recreational upgrade, providing a dedicated space for wheeled sports that complements the existing park infrastructure. Member for Burdekin Dale Last said the project highlighted the benefits of making the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture under the Crisafulli Government. “Our government has made the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture that allows local government to put forward projects based on their consultation with local people and groups,” Mr Last said. “That means that we, as the state government, can deliver funding to support local jobs and local projects that make our communities better places to live.” Council confirmed that construction will commence in April, with further updates to be provided as the site transforms into a key recreational asset for the region.

On Friday, 28th June, 15 debutantes took centre stage at the Home Hill Memorial Hall for the Burdekin Singers’ annual Debutante Ball, this year themed “Enchanted Forest.” The event drew a large crowd of local families, eager to celebrate the young women making their formal debut.
Lawrence Polga, President of the Burdekin Singers, said the ball remains an important tradition.
“We do it because we believe it's an event that still holds a special place to a lot of teenage girls, and is still a tradition that pays respect to not only the females that are making their debutante debut, but also their partners.”
The ball is one of the Burdekin Singers’ biggest events on their calendar and serves both as a community celebration and a fundraiser.
“The Burdekin Singers not only see it as a fundraiser, we also see it as a way to give back to the community that gives a lot to us, and allows us to put on our shows and bring the arts to life in the Burdekin,” Polga said.
Polga credits the volunteers who, in tandem with the Burdekin Singers dedicated sub-committee, worked behind the scenes to ensure the event ran swimmingly.
“It's not just about the night, it's about the lead-up and making sure that the room is in theme, the songs are in theme, and that the kids are made to feel comfortable," explains Polga.
"We help them with hair and make-up bookings, ensure their shoes are suitable for dancing, and source local support for catering and formal wear.”
The evening included choreographed dances for the girls, boys, and couples, making the ball a “mini production” in its own right. Guests included Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort and Member for Burdekin Dale Last, who joined the community in celebrating this longstanding tradition.
All funds raised go directly back into supporting the arts locally, including upgrading facilities at the Lighthouse and stage equipment for performances.

The Burdekin community came together on Wednesday, 30 July, for the annual Ready Set Go event—an initiative driven by passionate volunteers from the Burdekin Early Childhood Network and Ready Set Go committees. Held at Ayr Primary School Hall, the free morning event saw 24 stallholders—including local schools, community groups, and emergency services—offering vital information and support to families with children aged 0–5.
Now in its ninth year, Ready Set Go aims to raise awareness of early childhood services and help families better understand the support available across the Burdekin Shire. “It’s a way for families to engage with services that they don’t normally engage with or know about,” said Ready Set Go committee member Rebecca Aldridge. “It’s a way to educate them about these services and make connections.”
Emergency services were on-site with vehicles, much to the delight of young attendees, while a high-energy dance performance by Ready Set Dance had kids energised and on their feet. Organisers hope the event strengthens connections between families and services ahead of formal schooling.

The smooth sounds of timeless standards will echo through the Burdekin Theatre on Wednesday, August 13, as acclaimed Australian vocalist Chris Lloyds presents Morning Melodies: For the Love of Tony & Friends—a soulful musical salute to the great Tony Bennett and other legendary crooners.
Backed by the virtuosic Jamie Rigg Band, Lloyds will take the audience on a nostalgic journey, spotlighting Bennett’s greatest hits—like I Left My Heart in San Francisco—while weaving in gems by fellow crooners that Bennett never recorded.
“I liked the idea of doing some of the songs that Tony didn’t do, that we felt he could have—just to mix it up a little,” Lloyds says.
Once described as “one of Australia’s most broadcast vocalists,” Chris has lent his voice to hit jingles, top session recordings, and major TV appearances—including a stint on Neighbours—all while nurturing a lifelong passion for music.
“I started singing as a choir boy,” he says.
"My grandmother was a wonderful pianist and singer of the jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, and I used to sing with her. I sang Night and Day before I probably sang Baa Baa Black Sheep.”
Lloyds delivers the show with sincerity rather than imitation. “We don’t do dress-ups,” he says.
“We have masterful musicians, and I sing the way I sing—but we're doing the songs that were hits for Bennett and the crooners that everyone recognises.”
Tickets are $15, which includes complimentary morning tea provided by the Friends of the Burdekin Theatre. The show runs from 11:00 AM – 12:15 PM.

A fantastic weekend was celebrated by the Burdekin Potters to mark half a century of fostering the arts and clay creativity within the Burdekin community. The celebrations were kicked off with an official opening by Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort at 10am on Saturday, followed by a presentation of “Lifetime Certificates”to long-time members Carolyn Starkey and Meredith Modra, and Patron Isobell Cislowski, who then had the honour of cutting the cake.
A great crowd of locals and visitors turned up for the event! After morning tea was served, the pottery markets, clay making activities, wheel throwing demonstrations and pottery exhibition were open for the public to enjoy. It was a really enjoyable day for the attendees and a lot of interest was generated in our beginners classes!
On Sunday, the Burdekin Potters welcomed the public to witness their spectacular, once-a-year, Raku firing! This firing technique involves a lot of heat, fire and smoke to transform pottery into stunning raku-glazed pieces featuring metallic, black and white crackled highlights.
Whenever the doors are open at the Burdekin Potters clubhouse (situated at Plantation Park), the public are welcome to drop in and have a look around. Beginner classes are run every couple of months, so if pottery is something you may like to try, put your name down to be informed when the next course date is set.
This event was proudly supported by the Burdekin Shire Council.

Representing SunWater Limited
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Speech Pathology with Honours at James Cook University, an active volunteer across various community events and a former Ayr State High School Vice-Captain, Georgia Tomasetig has forever leaped at every opportunity to give back to those around her.
In the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival, Georgia will proudly represent SunWater Limited as a Senior Ambassador, and she’s more than excited to explore everything this chapter will bring.
“Being a Senior Water Festival Ambassador is an opportunity I hadn’t originally considered, but after SunWater reached out to me, inviting me to take part in this wonderful program, I’m truly grateful I said yes,” shared Georgia.
“I’ve always enjoyed challenging myself and trying new things, and this experience is unlike anything I’ve done before and I’m excited to be involved and proud to give back to the community that has given me so much!”
Georgia’s love for her local community runs deep and she hopes to share this love among her fellow Junior and Senior Ambassadors over the next couple of months and beyond.
“I am looking forward to strengthening my interpersonal skills and giving back to the community that has given me so much and helped shape the person I am today,” she explained.
“After our Maria Populin BWF Launch, it was incredible to watch each and every one of the Ambassadors support and hype each other up, so it’s safe to say, I’m genuinely excited to begin this journey with such an amazing team and it is going to be an unforgettable year creating memories both big and small and I honestly cannot wait!”

This month, the Burdekin Potters are celebrating a monumental feat—50 years of friendship, shaping clay, and nurturing creativity at the heart of the community. On July 26 and 27, they’re opening their doors to honour this rich history and the passion that’s kept the club thriving all these years, inviting everyone to come along and join the festivities. The group first met in 1975, when about 20 enthusiasts gathered at Ayr High School to pursue a shared interest in pottery. “We started out meeting at night because the school was in use during the day, and we all just wanted a place where we could pot together,” recalls long-time member and former president Carolyn Starkey. Workshops with visiting artists soon followed, and by 1982, the club had secured its permanent home at Plantation Park Pottery through grants, council support, and fundraising. Keeping the club alive hasn’t always been easy. Membership dropped to just a handful in the early 2000s, but the few remaining members refused to let go. “We worked too hard for this place,” says Carolyn. “There was no way it was going anywhere while we were still around.” Today, membership sits at around 60 people, with beginner classes attracting new faces and a welcoming atmosphere keeping them around. “We’re probably one of the few clubs in Australia
open seven days and nights a week for members,” notes current club president Debbie Ferraris. “Once you’ve done a beginner’s course, you can come
down anytime. We’re always open and inclusive.” The anniversary weekend is set to feature pottery demonstrations, hands-on activities, and the club’s spectacular annual raku firing—a Japanese technique that produces spectacular flames and unique metallic finishes. For members, the event is a chance to share the
joy that’s kept the group thriving for five decades. “It’s in your blood once you start,” says Carolyn. “It’s long been my mental getaway—something I
can just lose myself in.”
WHEN: Saturday, July 26 (10 AM – 3 PM) &
Sunday, July 27 (all day)
WHERE: Plantation Park Pottery, 5 Kennedy
Street, Ayr
ACTIVITIES: Pottery demos, hands-on workshops,

Dubbed "Australia's own Bocelli," acclaimed Ingham-born tenor Paul Tabone returns to North Queensland this September with his celebrated show Viva Pavarotti at the Burdekin Theatre.
A graduate of the Central Queensland Conservatorium and an alumnus of Italy’s Luciano Pavarotti Foundation, Tabone calls the performance “a celebration of Pavarotti and more,” with “a little bit of opera, a bit of music theatre, and some pop.” Inspired by the famed Pavarotti & Friends concerts, the show revisits the duets and songs that brought classical music to the masses, alongside stories of Tabone’s own time training in Italy.
Tabone is quick to stress that Viva Pavarotti is “not a tribute show.”
“I just want to pay homage to everything this man has done for me,” he says. “I used to listen to Pavarotti growing up with my Nonna in Ingham. To go from that to joining his foundation at 21, performing on some of the biggest stages in the world because of him, was like a full‑circle moment.”
Honouring Pavarotti’s legacy also means creating opportunities for young, talented regional singers, which this concert will highlight with guest appearances by 12‑year‑old classical vocalist John Scanlon, 17‑year‑old pop singer Amber Meeson, and the Home Hill Choral Society.
For Tabone, who has performed iconic roles around the world—including more than 1,800 shows as Ubaldo Piangi in The Phantom of the Opera on London’s West End—returning to the Burdekin feels like coming home. “I’ve had a close connection with the region ever since my university days. It’s a pleasure to bring this repertoire back to such a welcoming community.”
One of the show’s most poignant moments comes when he performs “I Am Australian,” sung in Italian, a First Nations language, and English. “It’s my attempt at what Pavarotti did—blending pop and opera,” he explains. “It really resonates with us in regional Australia.”
And, of course, audiences can expect the iconic aria Nessun Dorma.
Ultimately, Tabone hopes they leave with “an appreciation of opera and crossover music, and an open mind that opera is not just someone standing on stage singing in another language.”
Don’t miss a night of world‑class music, live at the Burdekin Theatre on Sunday, 14 September.
Tickets are selling fast—call (07) 4783 9880 or book online at www.burdekintheatre.com.au today.

Eloise Rayner, a passionate local speech pathologist with a knack for heartfelt songwriting, has just dropped her latest single, There Goes My Heart—a stirring country track inspired by that moment when your emotions take over before your mind can catch up.
The song emerges naturally from Eloise’s long-standing love of songwriting and her involvement in a collaborative nationwide songwriting group.
“I’ve been songwriting since I was in my teenage years,” Eloise shared. “For the past four years, I've done a songwriting Zoom, where a bunch of songwriters from around Australia get on a Tuesday night and go off into little groups, and then we write songs. That song came about in one of those sessions."
Many listeners will relate to the single’s core feeling—the overwhelming rush when emotions take over before logic kicks in. Eloise explained, “It’s almost like that spiralling feeling… like a runaway train down a mountainside. I wanted to capture that feeling in the song, and even the way the song sounded sonically, I wanted it to feel like that feeling where you know your brain finally catches up and you realise, oh no, like, I’m way too far gone. There’s no coming back from it now.”
Behind the scenes, the track was co-written with several notable Australian songwriters including Australian country singer-songwriter and radio presenter Gina Jeffries and Sarah Buckley, whom Eloise had long hoped to collaborate with. “The group loved the idea, and we sort of ran with it,” she said.
Balancing her local healthcare role with music is a challenge Eloise embraces. “I’m just passionate about music, so I find time for it. I’m also really passionate about my job. It’s a balance between the two. I feel quite lucky to have a job that I enjoy so much... I enjoy them both so much.”
Looking ahead, Eloise revealed she already has more songs ready to go. “I will be writing and releasing as much as I can. I’ve done a few gigs, but my focus is more on songwriting and getting music out there.”
For her, country music’s power lies in storytelling and emotional connection. “It’s so clever and unique. It’s a shame it gets a rap for being just about dirt on your boots because it’s actually so poetic and beautiful. It makes you feel things you haven’t been able to put into words yourself.”
There Goes My Heart stands as a testament not only to Eloise’s songwriting ability, but also the creative spirit thriving right here in the Burdekin community. Be sure to listen to the single on your favourite streaming platform and support one of the our rising local talents.
