Burdekin Opens Its Heart To Stranded Passengers After Highway Horror

The Burdekin community has rallied to support survivors following last Thursday’s tragic bus rollover near Gumlu. While emergency services managed the confronting crash site, local residents, council staff, and Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort coordinated immediate relief, providing accommodation, meals, and medical aid to the shaken passengers.‍Tragedy On Bruce Highway As Bus Rolls Near GumluA young overseas tourist has died and dozens of passengers were left shaken after a bus crash near Gumlu last Thursday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the Bruce Highway north of Bowen just before 4pm on 14 May, after a southbound FlixBus travelling from Cairns to Airlie Beach left the roadway and rolled onto its side. The bus was carrying 29 people at the time of the crash. The driver, a 70-year-old Mackay man, was taken to Bowen Hospital with minor injuries. Police confirmed 26-year-old Serena Andreatta, a dual Argentina and Italy national, died at the scene. Several other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals in Townsville, Ayr and Bowen for treatment. One passenger who survived the crash told Burdekin Life they became concerned about the bus’s movements in the hours before the rollover. “I did not feel so safe,” the passenger said, claiming the bus appeared to be “swerving” at times. The passenger said the concern prompted them to fasten their seatbelt. They then recalled the bus striking a barrier before rolling, describing chaotic scenes inside the vehicle as passengers and belongings were thrown around the cabin. Following the crash, passengers were accommodated in Ayr overnight before being cared for at the Burdekin Theatre loft the following day, where they were provided meals prior to continuing their journey south on another bus. Burdekin Shire Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort attended to check on passengers and assisted in sourcing medication for those affected. Passengers lauded the response efforts of Burdekin Shire Council, Ayr Police, and the wider community. The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. The incident occurred on the same stretch of highway where a fatal Greyhound bus crash in 2024 claimed three lives. Superintendent Dean Cavanagh described the crash scene as “very confronting” and praised emergency crews for their rapid response. “This was a very complex incident, it was a very serious incident, and it was in an isolated area,” he said. “Although we tragically lost a life, I believe that effort that we saw absolutely went into saving many [more].” Premier David Crisafulli described the incident as a tragedy, expressing condolences for the woman who died and noting multiple patients were still fighting for life in hospital. $750m Bowen Pipeline Project Approaches Final Hurdle

The Bowen Pipeline Company will launch its critical water sales program this week, marking the final major milestone before seeking federal funding for a $750 million generational water infrastructure project. Opening on 20 May and running until 24 June, the program will serve as the commercial validation required to secure a 50 per cent federal government construction grant. The privately funded project would involve the construction of a 182-kilometre underground pipeline from the Burdekin River to Bowen, running primarily along the Bruce Highway corridor. Once operational, the pipeline is anticipated to deliver 100,000 megalitres of water annually, securing a reliable supply for Australia’s largest winter vegetable-growing region. Bowen Pipeline Company director Sean Brown said the water sales program was the culmination of nearly a decade of local advocacy. "This is essentially the final hurdle to be jumped prior to the lodging of our Federal Government construction grant application,” Mr Brown said. "For the Project to be considered by the Federals as a worthy recipient of funding, the region needs to demonstrate both large water demand volumes and significant numbers of water users." The company has set a minimum water volume of 20 megalitres, which can be shared between adjoining properties. "In effect, water users will be paying 2025 prices for water that will be delivered in 2030," Mr Brown said. The project is tracking towards ‘shovel-ready’ status by September 2026, ahead of a federal funding application. The company aims to secure a funding commitment in the May 2027 Federal Budget, with construction slated to begin in September 2027. Boasting a benefit-cost ratio of 1.27, the pipeline is projected to create 200 jobs during construction and 1,200 permanent roles upon completion. It is expected to drive a $300 million annual economic gain for agriculture and unlock up to $1 billion in additional investment through local green energy initiatives, such as sustainable aviation fuel and green ammonia. The infrastructure features several industry firsts, including Indigenous project equity and ownership, and a net-zero footprint supported by 30-megawatt solar farms utilising Australian-made Tindo Solar panels. Mr Brown credited local communities and political leaders, including Premier David Crisafulli, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, and local MPs and mayors, for progressing the project. "After 9 years of community effort to get this far, we seek your support for this final push," Mr Brown said. "This project is being built on the shoulders of the people who not only live in the region but all those who came before us." Public information and water sales presentations will commence at 4:30 pm at the DPI in Bowen on 20 and 28 May, and at the Ayr ANZAC Memorial Club on 21 and 27 May. Growing up in Ayr, Queensland, Able Seaman Thomas Wiseman was torn between two paths: following in his father’s footsteps or pursuing a passion inspired by his mother. “I was going to join the Army because my dad was Army and my grandfather was Army. But my mum is a pastry chef by trade, and my real love of cooking I got from her,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. Luckily, he not only went to his parents for advice, but actually listened to them. “Dad suggested I join the Navy. He said in the Navy, chefs cook every day at sea and travel the world,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. As chef on board HMAS Toowoomba, over the past five months, he’s visited six of Australia’s regional partners and engaged in multiple exercises, activities and operations with allied nations, all while being trained to become a fully qualified chef. “I went straight from school to enlisting and it was the best decision I have ever made by far. In just two years in the Navy, I’ve visited six countries and done several deployments. I love it,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. While learning his trade through Navy, he doesn’t have to worry about the competitive, seasonal nature of the hospitality industry and the lack of job security that can sometimes go with it. “The pay is so much better. In the civilian world, I would be on an apprentice wage. In the Navy, you get paid more and you learn more skills,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. There’s also the additional duties that allow him to develop the skills and knowledge required to live a well-rounded, adult life. “On top of being a chef, we have all of our external roles as well. I am a member of the ship’s emergency medical team, so if there’s a medical incident, I could be one of the members to go and respond. It is a great responsibility,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. Every day, Toowoomba’s chefs produce four meals for the about 200-strong crew, ensuring all watches on board are fuelled to carry out their duties protecting Australia and its interests. “Without the stokers, the ship doesn’t go anywhere, without the watchkeepers keeping us safe, we can’t do much, so while us chefs are also important in keeping the ship going, the entire crew is one big team,” Able Seaman Wiseman said. Internationally recognised leadership consultant and wellness advocate, Robyn Taylor has worked across Australia, Africa, Europe and the United States, combining modern leadership practices with mindfulness and wellbeing strategies developed through her own personal health journey. In March, Burdekin Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Matthew Magin invited Ms Taylor to speak at Council’s Women’s Health Day, reflecting the pair’s longstanding commitment to collaborating on projects across regional Queensland spanning a diverse range of industries and specialisations. “Workplace wellbeing carries more importance in our current times of uncertainty, everyday life seems to present more challenges,” said Ms Taylor. “A supportive workplace culture, recognising the current challenges, is demonstrated by employers who arrange programs such as the Women’s Health Day.” Mr Magin echoed Ms Taylor’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of prioritising staff wellbeing and fostering a positive workplace culture across regional organisations. “I agree that wellness programmes are hugely important for any and all employers to be organising for their staff,” he said. Ms Taylor said she was delighted to return to the region, fondly recalling previous visits to Ayr, including delivering an International Women’s Day presentation initiated by Lyndy McCathie and the Burdekin Zonta Club. Drawing on her own experience overcoming a diagnosis of advanced multiple sclerosis decades ago, Ms Taylor’s presentation at Burdekin Shire Council’s Women’s Health Day focused on resilience, mindset and personal wellbeing. She encouraged participants to take control of unhealthy stress patterns, embrace balance in both work and life, and recognise the value of community connection and regional living, resounding the quote, “it’s not what happens to you, it’s what you do about it” to reframe unbeneficial habits. “We can reprogram our perspective once we change the way we think about life and how we are managing our own situation,” she said. “Today are seeking relief from their daily pressures that can manifest in many ways, like feeling overwhelmed by current events, sometimes resulting in insomnia or deteriorating health. In this big picture, it is important that we find balance in the various aspects of our lives, including our jobs.” Ms Taylor also praised the “Can Do” attitude often found across regional Queensland and encouraged more women to become involved in community organisations such as Burdekin Zonta Club, saying purpose and connection play a vital role in long-term wellbeing. “I believe appreciating the value of regional life can be a major factor in finding the balance,” she added. “Ayr is such an attractive country town where living is without the pressures of sitting for hours in traffic, where one can consciously develop and incorporate an exercise program into the daily routine and where one can seek out like-minded people with whom to spend our very precious time. “Never underestimate the value of the business experience you are gaining in the Burdekin. With today’s expanding and ever- changing technology, regional business and regional careers are just as sophisticated as any to be gained in the crowded, frantic pace of a major city. “Appreciation and gratitude of our situation are major factors in finding balance. We can train our intellect to work with our perceived challenges and train our bodies with our exercise or gym program, but quite often we don’t realise how important it is to train the mind.” Ms Taylor said many of the leadership principles being discussed internationally were just as relevant in regional communities like the Burdekin Shire, particularly when it came to creating workplaces where people feel valued, fulfilled and supported. She also spoke about the importance of values-based leadership, mindfulness and wellbeing practices in helping people manage stress and maintain balance in both their professional and personal lives. Drawing on decades of experience in leadership coaching and wellness, including her internationally recognised Meditating Manager program, Ms Taylor encouraged people to prioritise reflection, self-awareness and personal growth alongside career ambitions. She said regional communities like the Burdekin offer unique opportunities to build meaningful careers while enjoying a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. “Be brave, be fearless, don’t allow anyone or anything to deter you in your pursuit of your career goals and ensure those goals are firm,” Ms Taylor advised. “I am absolutely ga ga about the power of goal setting. Queensland Farmers Urged To Prepare For Increased Natural Disaster Risks

There is an expected increased risk of fire for large areas of Queensland following last summer’s rain, great pasture growth and a drier winter.  

Understanding which natural disasters or severe weather events are likely to occur in your area will help you prepare for events that are most likely to impact your business.

Northern Queensland has also experienced unseasonal rainfall leading to increased fuel loads and fire authorities have warned of increased fire danger as temperatures increase during spring.   

It's important to ensure you have adequate insurance and a solid financial plan in place.
That’s why the Queensland Government has information and resources available to help producers ‘get ready’.    

Take photographs of your assets in their pre-disaster condition for reference. Make sure that everyone on the property is familiar with the evacuation plan in case of a flood, bushfire, or cyclone.

Additionally, ensure that livestock have access to higher ground or can be moved to safer areas with access to food and water. Keep emergency phone numbers handy for your local council, veterinarian and animal welfare agency and make sure your livestock can be properly identified in the event of a natural disaster.

To manage a disaster, remember to prevent, prepare, respond, recover and communicate.

Burdekin Machinery Preservationists Club Hosts Special Event

For over 50 years, the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists Club (BMP) has been dedicated to restoring and preserving old machinery, keeping history alive for future generations.

Founded in the 1960s by Alf Shand, with John Tate focusing on steam engines and Alf handling stationary engines, the club has grown into a beloved part of the community.

“Our goal has always been to restore and showcase vintage machinery,” says Alf Shand.

Over time, the club has built up an impressive collection housed in the old movie theatre at Brandon, which now serves as a display space for their carefully restored pieces.

The BMP Club doesn’t just focus on preservation but also on sharing these pieces of history with the wider community.

On 14th October at 10am, the club will be hosting an event where local pensioners and the public are invited to view the collection and enjoy a morning tea.

This gathering offers a unique opportunity to admire the craftsmanship of old machinery while connecting with like-minded individuals.

Another Stage Complete In Honouring Jean Morris

After over fourteen months of hard work and exceptional community support, stage 2 of establishing Jean Morris’ headstone has been completed.

A commendable effort spearheaded by Henry Petersen and Paula Dawson, the establishment of Jean Morris’ headstone serves as one part of the pair’s dedicated mission to honour the young woman who was tragically murdered in Queen Street, Ayr at just 19-years-old on 3 October 1932.

Officially completed on Monday 23 September, stage 2 saw the laying of a stunning rose red granite leger on top of Jean’s 93-year-old unmarked grave. The completion of stage 2 of the initiative comes almost two months after stage 1 was finalised which entailed placing a cement slab on top of the Ayr Cemetery grave.

Both Henry, Paula and those also behind the project cannot thank the Burdekin community enough for their support, noting they would not have been able to reach this milestone on their own.

“Stage 2 was completed this morning at the Ayr Cemetery thanks to all the community support that we have received over the past 14 months,” shared Henry.

“We hope to complete this Burdekin community project by the end of the year.”

1. How long have you been working as a radio host, and what initially drew you to this profession?
What initially drew me to this profession is that I felt like I had something to prove. I was drawn to it by the late Ken Gilbert, he invited me to help him out with a discography program on Tuesday nights. At the time I didn’t have a vehicle so he would pick me up and head to the studio in late May 2000. I became a co-host up until the end of 2001.

  2. What’s your favourite band or musician, and how has their music influenced your career?
I love the stuff from the early 80s, bands like The Cars, REO Speedwagon. I’m not afraid to get a little heavy on my shows with Iron Maiden, KISS and Judas Priest. I grew up watching Countdown with iconic moments like when Cold Chisel trashed the stage.

   3. What’s the most memorable interview or moment you’ve experienced on air?
I think my first ever outdoor broadcast, only on one or two occasions every year I was getting involved in outdoor broadcast, carting all the gear and offloading it, setting it up. I did get a little nervous, performing outdoors in front of the public made me feel a little tense but I just take it one day at a time, with a pinch of salt.
 
 4. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a radio host?

Don’t be afraid to experiment, just be yourself and do your best to entertain the masses.




   5. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a radio host?

Rhythm and timing. The timing aspect is the most challenging, you’ve got to be careful with what you talk about too. It’s okay to get excited, but you’ve got to be careful not to get too political or anything like that.

A Journey Across Australia Comes To The Burdekin

What began as a casual conversation between two friends over drinks in 2014 has blossomed into a full-fledged charitable movement called "Scootaville."

The initial idea was simple but bold: to ride across the Nullarbor Plain on 50cc scooters.

However, the small scooters struggled with the vast distances, and the event faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But in 2022, Scootaville came back stronger, with upgraded 110cc scooters, completing a successful ride from Brisbane to Townsville via Emerald.

The event raised over $25,000 for Legacy, and future plans include a run through New South Wales in November and expansion to Victoria next year, with a goal to make Scootaville a nationwide event by 2027.

At the heart of Scootaville's mission is a commitment to supporting Legacy, a charity that assists families of veterans. The cause is close to the hearts of the event’s organisers, all ex-Australian Defence Force (ADF) members.

Legacy provides vital services to those who have lost their lives, suffered poor health due to their service, or are homeless. Plus, who doesn’t love the feeling of knowing you’re making the world just a little bit brighter, one kind act at a time?
Ayr State High School student Isaac Ghee understands this intimately, having successfully completed his Certificate II in Active Volunteering (CHC24015) through the Burdekin Centre for Rural Health and Burdekin Community Association (BCA).

This qualification, designed to provide foundational skills for entry-level volunteer work, is part of an initiative supported by BCA Volunteer Manager Rita Quagliata.

The program not only helps students like Isaac gain valuable work experience but also contributes to their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Throughout the course, students learn key skills such as effective communication, basic work safety, technology use, and how to navigate different work environments.

By volunteering, students develop confidence and practical knowledge, preparing them for future employment while making a positive impact on the community. Year 11 students from Ayr State High School are currently participating in the program, which is helping them build a foundation for future careers and providing valuable services to local organisations.

Fatal Motorbike Crash Under Investigation in Ayr

The Forensic Crash Unit is currently investigating a tragic motorbike crash that occurred in Ayr last Thursday evening, September 12. According to initial reports, the accident took place at approximately 12:30am when a blue Yamaha WR450F motorbike was travelling south along a footpath near the Bruce Highway.

Sadly, the rider, a 38-year-old man from Ayr, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 34-year-old woman, also from Ayr, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Ayr Hospital for treatment.

Local authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant information or footage of the crash to come forward. The Forensic Crash Unit will be thoroughly reviewing the circumstances surrounding the accident as part of their ongoing investigation.

Motorbike crashes can be particularly devastating, and this incident highlights the dangers of riding on footpaths, which are not designed for motorised vehicles. The crash serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of road safety for all riders and pedestrians alike.

Police are working to piece together the exact sequence of events, and the investigation is expected to continue in the days ahead.

Anne Baker Launches Burdekin Campaign

Anne Baker, Labor candidate for the seat Burdekin, has 17 years of experience in local government and is bringing her leadership skills to the Burdekin electorate. Having lived in the Bowen electorate for 39 years and in Collinsville for a decade, Baker says she has built a strong connection with the region.

"I’m an authentic leader; I’m a people person and will always put people over politics," she said, emphasising her commitment to the community.

Baker’s political background includes 12 years as the Mayor of the Isaac Region, where she led major legislative changes in areas like mining, agriculture, and cattle industries.

"I understand the processes and mechanisms of government, having led sustainable resource legislation directly related to mining," she noted, underscoring her hands-on experience.

When asked about her key priorities for the Burdekin, Baker pointed to significant projects already in the pipeline, including the Bowen Pipeline and water projects in Ayr and the western mining communities.

"There’s lots in the system, and my initial focus is to fully understand them and ensure they’re delivered. Community consultation will play a big role in ensuring these projects succeed."

Baker is also focused on addressing broader local concerns, including cost of living and crime.

"One of the reasons I put my hand up is because I’ve always been driven by authentic and deliverable leadership," she explained.

With a deep understanding of local issues and a strong track record, Baker is confident in her ability to make a difference for the people of the Burdekin.

As residents struggle under costs of living, damaging and deadly roads and the climbing number of victims of crime, Member for Burdekin and LNP candidate Dale Last is encouraging everyone to ensure their voices are heard this October.

Mr Last said ensuring each and every person had the opportunity to have their say on issues affecting them was crucial when it came to advocating for funding and services needed in regional Queensland.

“Here in the Burdekin, we are seeing issues like the rising costs of living, an ongoing debacle over our water supply, roads that could be best described as goat tracks and soaring pressures on our health services to transport patients 100km just for a CT,” Mr Last said.

“Issues like these are ones that we have stared down the barrel of for years and now is the time to make your voice heard.

“As the Member for Burdekin, my goal is to see everyone who is entitled to have their say in October is able to and my staff at the Burdekin Electorate Office are more than happy to assist with this.”

Mr Last said with an ageing population in the electorate and the increased reliance on technology, the ability to be able to come into an electorate office and speak with a staff member one-on-one to update personal details or apply for a postal vote was invaluable.

“There is a limited time to ensure that your voting details are up to date, and if you aren’t able to vote in your residential electorate on the day, that you apply for a postal vote.”

An Australian First In The Burdekin

A pioneering community-led pipeline project is steadily advancing towards its goal of becoming Australia’s first net-zero water infrastructure project, aligning with both Commonwealth Climate Change legislation and the State Government’s carbon reduction goals. This groundbreaking initiative represents not only a leap forward in sustainability but also in technological innovation.

The project’s leaders have successfully secured nearly of the 182-kilometre pipeline alignment, with only a 40-metre stretch across a Sunwater/Water Board channel still pending. This includes five critical pump stations and three laydown areas which will be used for operational purposes.

One of the most significant breakthroughs is the decision to manufacture the pipe on-site. Rather than transporting 8-metre pipe segments from Brisbane, Sydney, or Townsville, the team will bring a specialised machine directly to the construction site. This allows for the production of pipes in lengths exceeding 100 metres, resulting in substantial cost and time savings.

Key benefits of on-site production include a reduction in transport emissions by eliminating the need for transporting shorter pipe segments, avoiding approximately 5 million kilometres of truck movements—equivalent to driving around the Earth 20 times with 10 B-double trucks. The number of welds will be reduced by 90%, which is critical since welds are typically the weakest point in any pipe. On-site production will save an estimated 36,000 hours in welding time, accelerating project completion. This approach is expected to cut costs by 45%, making the project more financially feasible.

The pipeline will utilize cutting-edge, low-pressure technology that has already been proven in countries like New Zealand and the United States, including in Texas and Florida. The technology enables water to move at a controlled pace—roughly the speed of a person walking—allowing for efficient water distribution. Farmers and other users can store and apply the water to their crops at a rate that suits their needs.

The project has garnered support from a wide range of local and national stakeholders. Negotiations are underway with a national/international company that may assist in both operation and joint funding of the pipeline’s construction. Local backing is also strong, with 41 private investors, most of whom reside in the Burdekin and Bowen regions, contributing financially to the project.

Importantly, the traditional owners of the land, the Juru people, are equity partners in the project. This collaboration not only ensures cultural respect and compliance but also fosters economic opportunities for Indigenous communities. As Juru Elder and Chair Trevor Prior emphasized, creating job opportunities through initiatives like this is key to addressing broader social issues, including crime reduction.

The project’s success hinges on timely governmental approval. If Minister Scanlon issues a letter of endorsement before October 1st, 2024, the project will be on track to lodge its Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) application—a crucial step toward breaking ground by November 2025 and becoming operational by late 2027. Any delays in this process could cost the region an estimated $300 million per year in lost economic benefits and 1,200 years' worth of wages for North Queensland workers.

Beyond its economic and environmental benefits, the project is deeply committed to giving back to the community. It has already become a sponsor for several local organizations, including the Bowen Netball Association, Bowen Swimming Club, Burdekin Netball Association, and Saltwater Arts Collective. Additional support for Burdekin and Home Hill community groups is in the pipeline.

This project is not just about building infrastructure—it’s about transforming the region, promoting sustainability, creating jobs, and giving back to the community.
