Two East Ayr State School students have participated in the coveted Australia Wearable Art Creative 2023 PSOE event, which is also part of the Festival of the Arts. Year 6 students Savannah and Zenniece, with their teacher Mrs Nash, travelled to the event in Townsville in August to showcase two wearable art costumes, designed and constructed by East Ayr State School students.

Over 3,000 people lined Eighth Avenue last Saturday, November 11 for the Harvest Festival Grand Parade where businesses and organisations paraded down the street in floats of all shapes and sizes.Celebrations continued at Watson’s Green for the Street Party where rides, food and live music kept guests partying on into the night.

Pintxos, Paella and Postre were on the menu on Sunday, November 5 as North Queensland Basque Club hosted its Burdekin function at the Parish Hall in Ayr. Generous members donated to the raffle prizes while the Arrate sisters celebrated their November birthdays. North Queensland Basque Club shared a huge ‘eskerrik asko’ (thank you) to Mary Arrate and her team of helpers who prepared, cooked and served Sunday’s meal and drinks.

Giru HwaRangdo recently held a day of training and grading, inviting Grand Master Myung Man Kim to the region.Students gathered in Giru on Sunday, November 12 for a day involving the grading of students in front of Grand Master Kim, Head Instructor Zoe Hughes and two senior instructors, Jay and Jack. A 3-hour training session then followed for all students and instructors.

The ‘Players of the Week’ award winners last Friday in the Under 13s were Xavier Cross and Oscar Mahoney. Xavier scored 9 runs with the bat and in the field, he ran out a batter and clean bowled another. Oscar, who has been very consistent each week, scored 19 runs, also effected a run out and snared two wickets when bowling, one of which was a caught and bowled. The highest run scorer was Marshall Parker with 24 and an honourable mention must go to Michael Finn who was unbeaten on 17 runs. The

Cricket action returned to Barry Richards Field in Home Hill last weekend with Peto’s Marine taking on Crowned Mongrels. Crowned Mongrels won the toss and elected to bowl, sending Peto’s Marine openers Simon Vickers and Daniel Olditch to the crease.

On Thursday November 9, the St Francis students from Years 3 - 6 dove into the pool to compete in their annual school swimming carnival. There was a lot of fierce competition in and out of the pool as students competed for individual points, house points and spirit points.

Residents of Home Hill now have a new female doctor available for appointments thanks to the incoming Dr Pavani Ganapathi who has just joined the team of five other doctors at Home Hill Doctors Surgery. Another female doctor in town retired several months ago and many residents are relieved this essential role has now been filled.

On Ken Duncan’s Rita Island farm, hoof marks, pierced plastic mulch and half eaten fruit show signs of unwelcome night-time activity. Feral deer have long been a problem on the island, but Mr Duncan and his neighbours say the problem is getting worse.
