Surf Sports Season Kicks Off

Eighteen Ayr Surf Lifesavers headed to The Strand last Saturday to compete in the first North Barrier Branch Surf Carnival for the 2026-27 Season.

The carnival, hosted by Townsville-Picnic Bay SLSC for Under 8 - Under 15 competitors, marks the beginning of a long and gruelling competition season for local lifesavers.

The members took on both water and beach events in a great display of athleticism early on in the season. Competitors gave it their all and demonstrated some incredible individual and team efforts as well as fantastic sportsmanship and camaraderie between themselves and the other clubs within the branch.

Surf Life Saving Queensland is working hard to future proof their surf sports movement by investing in their youth members and encouraging diversity in pathways in lifesaving including youth members taking on bigger roles such as officials at carnivals. Four young Ayr members have recently completed their Official accreditation to further develop their skills and assist with the successful running of Surf Sports carnivals. Three of these young members—Briella Wassmuth, Bella Lawry & Charlotte Lawry—donned the white shirt on Saturday for their first foray into officiating and represented the club to the highest standard.

The 2026-27 Season for Nippers is underway, but it is not too late to Join the Club and become part of the Ayr Surf Life Saving family.
