Minute with the Mayor Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort

Get Ready Week is an important reminder for all of us to prepare for the unexpected events that can occur during disaster season. Even if you have lived in the area all your life, it is important not to become complacent. The Disaster Dashboard now also gives you the option to choose your preferred language, making important information easier to access. If you have a new neighbour, please encourage them to contact Council for information on how they can prepare.

‍

If you have a question, suggestion or idea for the Burdekin, I’d love to hear from you. I’ll be at the Hotel Pioneer in Brandon on Saturday 17 October from 8.00am to 10.00am for our next Catch Up with the Mayor. Come along for a coffee and a chat about local issues, share your feedback and find out what’s happening across the Shire. There’s no need to make an appointment. Everyone is welcome, and I look forward to seeing you there.

We received welcome news when the Australian Government reversed its decision to reduce its share of disaster funding from 75 per cent to 50 per cent. The change would have placed significant pressure on state and local governments. Followingthe January and February 2025 disaster event, Burdekin Shire Council claimed $22 million, with the Australian Government contributing $16.5 million and the Queensland Government $5.5 million. Under a 50–50 arrangement, the Australian Government’s contribution would have fallen to $11 million, leaving an additional $5.5 million to be found. For Council, that amount is equivalent to a 17.46 per cent rate rise, based on each 1 per cent raising about $315,000. We simply could not absorb that cost without risking lengthy delays to the repair or replacement of Council infrastructure. Thankfully, the current funding arrangements will continue, which is welcome news for councils and disaster-affected communities like ours.
