It was great to meet with residents who stopped by my recent Catch Up with the Mayor in Brandon. These informal conversations give me the opportunity to hear directly from our community and gain a better understanding of the issues that matter most to you.
While I may not always be able to provide the answers people are looking for, I am always happy to listen and do what I can to help.
This Saturday, I'll be in Giru for the next Catch Up with the Mayor from 8.00am to 10.00am at the Giru Store. If you have a question, suggestion or idea for the Burdekin, please come along for a chat. I look forward to seeing you there.
Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Airville State School, where students presented their ideas on how Plantation Park could be improved. It was rewarding to hear both the positives and the challenges they identified. Our young people have valuable perspectives, and it is encouraging to see them taking an active interest in the future of our community.
I would also like to remind residents that nominations are now open for the 2027 Australia Day Awards. These awards recognise the outstanding individuals and groups who make a positive contribution to the Burdekin through their dedication, achievements and service to others. If you know someone deserving of recognition, I encourage you to submit a nomination.
Nominations close on Monday 7 December 2026 and can be lodged via the nomination form on Council's website or with assistance from our Customer Service team. Winners will be announced at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony at the Burdekin Theatre on 26 January 2027.
Around the Shire, drainage upgrade works continue in First Street, Home Hill and within the original stage of the Industrial Estate. Improvements are also underway at Ayr Cemetery, while progress continues at the Home Hill Swimming Pool project, which is shaping up well.
Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to catching up with many of you around the community. As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss any Council matters, please contact me directly by phone on 0447 150 582 or by email at mayor@burdekin.qld.gov.au.
