HOME HILL MAN FIRST IN BURDEKIN CHARGED WITH COERCIVE CONTROL

A 33-year-old Home Hill man has become the first person in the Burdekin charged with coercive control since the offence came into effect in last year, following allegations of a five-month campaign of domestic violence against his partner.

‍

He also faces two counts of threatening violence, one count of common assault and four counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police opposed his bail and he has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on the 2nd of November.

‍

Queensland criminalised coercive control on the 26th of May 2025.

The offence covers patterns of physical or non-physical abuse used to hurt, humiliate, isolate, frighten or threaten a victim-survivor, and carries a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment.

‍

As of May 2026, 127 people had been charged with coercive control across Queensland, with 10 convictions resulting in prison sentences.

Queensland Police recorded 351 victims during the reported period.
