As storm season approaches, now is the time to prepare. Good preparation is the key to staying safe during natural disasters and protecting your family, pets and property when severe weather strikes.
Residents are encouraged to take simple steps now, including cleaning gutters, trimming overhanging branches, securing loose outdoor items, ensuring vehicles are fuelled and making plans for pets if evacuation becomes necessary. These practical measures can reduce damage, improve safety and help ease the pressure when a disaster is imminent.
One of the most important preparations is having a well-stocked emergency kit. An emergency kit helps households remain safe, comfortable and self-sufficient if power, water, roads or communication networks are disrupted.
Every household should have an emergency kit stored in an easily accessible location. Essential items include drinking water, non-perishable food, a battery-powered or wind-up radio, torch, spare batteries, first aid supplies, essential medications, phone chargers or power banks, important documents stored in a waterproof container and basic hygiene items.
Families should also consider their individual needs by including cash, spare clothing, bedding, baby supplies, pet food and any other necessities required in an emergency. It is equally important to check kits regularly and replace expired food, medications and batteries.
Most importantly, stay informed and act quickly when warnings are issued. Official advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and local disaster authorities should always be followed. Preparing early and responding promptly to warnings remains the best way to protect lives, property and our community during severe weather events.
