A major upgrade to Sunwater's Elliot Pump Station south of Clare is now complete, replacing original equipment that had been in service for nearly four decades.
The Sunwater facility, located on the Burdekin River about 10 kilometres south of Clare, plays a central role in delivering water to Lower Burdekin irrigators.
The works included the installation of a new electrical switch room, replacement cabling, updated control and monitoring systems, and new safety measures to mitigate electrical hazards for site workers.
Despite extensive works, crews managed to keep water flowing to regional farms without interruption throughout the entire project.
Sunwater Burdekin Whitsundays Operations Manager Aaron Elphinstone said the modernised facility reinforces long-term reliability for local agriculture.
“The original pumps have been in operation since the late 1980’s, providing a reliable water supply for the past four decades before reaching end of life,” he said.
“With the capability to support a long design life, the upgrade provides a safe and resilient asset that will continue to deliver reliable water.”
The project relied on regional trades and suppliers, with Townsville-based Minelec serving as principal contractor alongside CivilPlus Constructions. Fabrication and construction support were provided by Powerhouse Switchrooms, Crisp Power and Control, and Woodfield Engineering.
