More than 400 people packed the Burdekin Memorial Hall last Friday night to celebrate 33 young women and their partners at this year’s Burdekin Deb of the Year.
Hosted by Burdekin Netball on 4th of September, the event celebrated the personal growth and work of each debutant throughout the year.
Taylor Stockdale was crowned Deb of the Year, with Amaya Caspanello named runner-up, Elora Taylor receiving a Special Mention and Chloe Bugeja taking out the Girls’ Choice award.
Burdekin Netball Publicity Officer Kellie Loizou said a bigger debutant pool than last year “created a wonderful atmosphere.”
“This year saw a larger number of debs take part than the previous year, which … made the event feel reminiscent of the Deb of the Year events of years gone by,” she said.
“There was a wonderful sense of camaraderie throughout the entire experience.”
Ms Loizou said the event was the end of a “special” period of growth for the debutants.
“It was particularly special to see the friendships, support and encouragement that developed within the group and carried through to the event itself,” she said.
This year marked the second straight iteration hosted by Burdekin Netball.
“As a community sporting organisation, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to provide an event that extends beyond netball and creates an opportunity for members of the wider community to come together,” Ms Loizou said.
She said the organisation was grateful to the participants, families, volunteers, organisers, sponsors and wider Burdekin community whose support helped deliver the event.
“With more than 400 people attending and 33 debs participating, it was wonderful to see such strong support for the event,” Ms Loizou said.
“Burdekin Netball is very proud to play a part in continuing this important community tradition, and we hope this year’s participants look back on the experience with many happy memories.”
