A simple act can make a big difference! Burdekin residents have returned millions of containers through Containers for Change, supporting local fundraising, employment opportunities and the wider community. Photosupplied
Over the past 12 months, Burdekin residents returned 14 million containers through Containers for Change, putting around $1.4 million in refunds back into local hands.
The impact goes beyond the 10c returned for each container, with 57 community accounts registered across the Burdekin, giving residents the opportunity to turn their recycling into fundraising for local groups and organisations.
In Ayr, North Queensland Green Solutions shows how recycling can create opportunities for people in the community. The social enterprise operates a Containers for Change refund point while providing employment and training opportunities for people living with disabilities, injuries or health conditions.
The initiative has become a familiar part of the Burdekin community, with North Queensland Green Solutions reaching the milestone of processing its 50 millionth container in May 2025.
For every bottle and can returned, residents are not only keeping waste out of landfill, but helping create jobs, support community groups and put money back into the local economy. It is a simple act that continues to make a meaningful difference across the Burdekin.
