SUGAR RUSH HITS NEW HEIGHTS

SUGAR RUSH HITS NEW HEIGHTS

The Burdekin’s premier running event saw a record-breaking turnout on Sunday, 26 April, as nearly 400 athletes laced up in Ayr for what was a Sugar Rush for the books. The 24th edition of the Burdekin Road Runners and Walkers Club’s signature running event saw its previous participation record of 320 smashed, with around 392 runners taking part. Club president Patrick Shannon hailed the event as a success for both the organisation and the wider North Queensland running community. “We’re chuffed with the turnout,” Mr Shannon said. “It was a bit unfortunate—we actually had to cut off entries a little bit early simply because we ran out of bibs. It just means we have to plan bigger and better next year.” Continued on page 28 Massive Field Powers Sugar Rush To New Record In Ayr Continued from cover The event attracted competitors from as far north as Cairns and south as Mackay, alongside families and first-time runners in shorter distance fun runs. Jeff Rubach of the Townsville Road Runners won the men’s half marathon in 1:15:08, while Vanessa Kennedy of Hungry Runners took out the women’s title in 1:27:15. Matt Hutchinson led the men’s 10km field in 35:51, with Brittany Hutchinson winning the women’s race in 40:26. Miles Kerr claimed the men’s 5km title in 20:18, while Mia Brunker of the PACE Project won the women’s event in 20:46. Each runner received a complimentary barbecue breakfast courtesy of the Ayr Rotary Club, while MC John Furnell entertained supporters at the finish line at the Ayr War Memorial. Mr Shannon said the memorial backdrop capped off the morning, the culmination of months of preparation. “There was a lot of work put in over the last three to five months… But to see the community coming out, the amazing weather, and the day after Anzac Day, having the monument behind us, was a really good feeling.” FULL RESULTS Half Marathon—Men Jeff Rubach (Townsville Road Runners) — 1:15:08 Grant Breadsell Aaron Bathis Half Marathon—Women Vanessa Kennedy (Hungry Runners) — 1:27:15 Liv Compton (Whitsunday Running Club) Elizabeth Maguire (Hungry Runners) 10km—Men Matt Hutchinson — 35:51 Sonny O’Rourke Brendan Maltby 10km—Women Brittany Hutchinson — 40:26 Anwen Mackay Isla Chapman 5km—Men Miles Kerr — 20:18 Nathan Barrett Brad Patti 5km—Women Mia Brunker (PACE Project) — 20:46 Bec Stedman Skye Claussen CAPTIONS: Back—The 24th edition of the Burdekin Road Runners and Walkers Club’s signature running event saw its previous participation record of 320 smashed, with around 392 runners taking part. 2—Jeff Rubach of the Townsville Road Runners won the men’s half marathon in 1:15:08. 3—Vanessa Kennedy of Hungry Runners took out the women’s title in 1:27:15. Football Matters with Cyclops 30th April

Football Matters with Cyclops 30th April

Seniors A better weekend for the Burdekin Panthers. The Club had only four senior games winning three and losing one. The Premiers and Reserve, away to Riverway JCU, won 2-1 and the Reserves, also away to JCU also won 2-1, The Division 1, at home to rebels lost 3-6 but the Division 2, also at home to Rebels won 3-0. The Colts and Ladies both had byes. This week only four teams are in action as both Ladies and Colts have byes. On Friday, the Division 1 and Division 2 are away to Olympic, at 8.30 and 6.30 and on Saturday the Premiers and Reserves are away to Warriors at 7.00 and 3.00. The Colts and Ladies do not have games this week. Premiers – Ayr Anzac Club An away trip to JCU is never easy, and after dropping points the previous week, there was added motivation to respond. JCU started strongly, limiting the Panthers time on the ball and making it difficult to find any rhythm early. The first half produced few clear chances, with JCU capitalising late to take a 1–0 lead into the break. The second half saw a renewed energy from the Panthers, while JCU looked to sit deeper and protect their advantage. This shift allowed Burdekin to dominate possession and build pressure in dangerous areas. The Panthers came close on many occasions, including a strike off the crossbar, before Elliott Dal Santo found the breakthrough with a well-taken finish following strong defensive work in the lead-up. Pushing for a winner, Kyle Taylor earned a penalty in the 87th minute, and Jake Siandri stepped up to calmly convert and give the Panthers a 2–1 lead which they held onto in the closing stages to secure a hard-fought result. That’s three wins from their opening four rounds. Reserves – Burdekin Tyre Service Another week and another changed side saw the Reserves debut opportunity for young players Charlie Predebon & Nyasha Gwarada. It was a very warm afternoon game and developed into a good contest with both teams working hard but neither finding any dominance in possession or field position. It took until the last five minutes of the first half for a goal to come from a longer range freekick and JCU went into the break one up. The second half for the Panthers was much better with senior players able to influence the game and keep better possession of the ball. With improved possession and control Burdekin were able to score two goals from Jonte Grazioli and Dom Arrate. It was a gritty game that in previous seasons the Panthers may have let slip, so very pleasing to turn it around and notch up another win. Division 1 – Austral Masonry Against Rebel, both teams and goals started fast, with two goals from Julen Arrate being answered by two from Rebels in the first eighteen minutes. At half time it was 2-2. After that Burdekin got stuck into the grind with tackles flying everywhere. Then a penalty to Rebels and second yellow card for Brad Wright tipped the balance, with Rebels side scoring two goals in quick succession. Cody Scalia headed in a beautiful Charlie Shears corner to give the Burdekin a chance, but with only ten men, it was too much of a struggle The game ended 6-3 to Rebels. Division 2 – RG Customs RG Customs 2nd division defeated Rebels 3-0 in a match they dominated from start to finish. Chris Achille gave Burdekin the lead early in the first half, but despite lots of possession and repeatedly attacking Rebels goal, the Funkies were unable to extend their lead in the first half. Burdekin added further goals through Simon Scuderi after 68 minutes and Fengil after 84 minutes in the second half to see the Funkies rewarded for their efforts and deserving winners in a match they controlled very much from start to finish. Next up is MA Olympic this Friday night away in Townsville. Masters The Masters had another good turnout and, augmented by the Ladies Squad had a replay of the World Cup Qualifier, Italy v Bosnia Herzegovina. A tight match ended in a 2-2 draw with a replay next Monday. Best players on the night were Charley Ruskin and Riley Granshaw. The Masters play every Monday night. All players are welcome, male, and female, useful and hopeless, halt and lame. Be there, International Park for 6.30 Kick off. Juniors Junior soccer returned in great spirit over the Anzac Day weekend, marking the first round of games following the school holiday break. Our youngest players in the U5–U7 age groups took to the field on Saturday afternoon, enjoying local matches filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and plenty of smiles. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces back and eager to play. Sunday saw an exciting milestone for the U8–U12 teams, who travelled to Townsville for their first games of the season. The step up in competition didn’t deter our players, with all teams showing determination and great sportsmanship throughout the day. It was a wonderful way to kick off the return to soccer, with strong participation across all age groups and a positive start to the term ahead. The U15's had their first game at the weekend against Wulguru. A new coach, a few new players and whole lot of enthusiasm. A bit of nervous energy to start with the first goal being scored by the opposition, but the team went in at half time with a 2-1 lead. Goals for the Panthers scored by Annan Power and Nathan Casella. The team lost Linc Innes due to a nasty clash with their keeper which depleted the bench with only one sub. The second half saw the team digging deep to secure three more goals. One of the new Panthers, Cecil Badza Gwarda scoring two and Emmanuel Mio banging in the final goal for the Panthers to secure a convincing win 5-2. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a break before their next round on the 16 May. An excited U13 Burdekin Panthers team took the field for the first time this season again MA Olympic. The Panthers came away with a very good 3-0 win with two goals from. 2 Caelan Farrell and one from Jazz Chung. All players played outstanding football!! National The A League Men’s season has reached the final stages. Newcastle have won the Premiership; five points clear of Adelaide with Auckland third and Melbourne Victory fourth. The Elimination Finals start on Saturday with Auckland playing Melbourne City and Victory playing Sydney FC. The A League Women are at the Semi-finals stage. At the end of regular fixtures Melbourne City were Premiers six points clear of Wellington, with Canberra third and Brisbane fourth. Junior Cricket Recap

October 19, 2023

The Junior Cricket season kicked off on Friday, October 6 at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Cricket Complex in Home Hill with a good turn out of eager children itching to emulate their heroes with the bat and ball. There were some great skills on show for so early in the season thanks to the amount of cricket some of them have played recently at the Country Cup in Charters Towers. Some standouts with the bat were Michael Finn 14 runs, Oscar Mahoney 13 runs and Marshall Parker with 12 runs, all not out.

Marshall and Oscar took a wicket each when bowling as did Henri Klopper, but Nate Elphinstone stole the show with amazing figures of 3 wickets for only 2 runs off 2 overs. All the players had big smiles on their faces even if they didn’t score runs or take any wickets so it is certain that everyone had a good time.

Tuesday, October 10 was the start of the Rookies Blaster program (5-7yo) at East Ayr State School and last Friday saw the Challenger Blasters (7-10yo) start at the club in Home Hill.

A combined Home Hill/Charters Towers Under 17 team played Brothers last Saturday in Charters Towers and was unfortunately beaten soundly by the Townsville team. Thomas Cardillo was Home Hill’s top scorer with 27 runs, Corey Heidke took 2 wickets and Leo Olditch snared 1.

Cricket’s Back

October 19, 2023

Senior cricket returned to Barry Richards Field over the weekend, with most players backing up from a thrilling Town of Origin showdown between Ayr and Home Hill the weekend before.

Round one of the Home Hill Cricket Association Saturday Senior competition pitted Peto’s Marine against Guardian Pharmacy, with Peto’s Marine winning the toss and electing to bat.

Opener Simon Vickers got the innings underway with a solid 34 runs off 35 balls, building a dangerous looking partnership with number three batsman Daniel Olditch who finished with 23 runs from 20 balls.

The middle order got Peto’s Marine to a defendable 175 total from their 25 overs, thanks to 39 runs off 27 balls from Greg Flanagan and 24 runs off 30 balls from Leon Franklin.

Wickets to Jd Wilkins (2), Andrew Wallwork, Kenneth Southwell, Jamie Grabs, Isaac Cardillo and Lee Watts saw Peto’s Marine finish at 7/175.

Lee Watts and Isaac Cardillo got the chase underway for Guardian Pharmacy, with an unfortunate run out at the non-striker’s end bringing Lee’s innings to an end on 13 from 21 balls.

Andrew Wallwork came in at number three, stabling the ship with an unbeaten 51 off 40, with Jd Wilkins scoring 26 from 31 at number four.

With Andrew retiring not out, big hitters Kenneth Southwell and Andrew Cardillo combined with a respective 32 not out from 26 and 15 from 12 to finish off Guardian Pharmacy’s run chase with a couple of overs to spare.

Wickets to Aaron Elphinstone (2) and Christopher Penna saw Guardian Pharmacy chase down the total after losing three wickets.

Peto’s Marine will back it up again this week, taking on Crowned Mongrels on Saturday afternoon, while a combined U17 Home Hill and Charters Towers team will take on Townsville Wests earlier that afternoon.

More Racing Coming To The Burdekin

October 19, 2023

A meeting at Burdekin Race Club last Thursday was the first of three additional TAB meetings to be held at the Home Hill track as Townsville Turf Club is in the process of upgrading its training track.

“We’ve been helping the Townsville Turf Club out by having track gallops and jump outs to take pressure off their main course,” said Burdekin Race Club President Ricky Gudge.

With Townsville’s training track out of action, trainers have been utilising the main course two or three times a week.

With the influx of use on Townsville’s main track, TAB dispersed four meetings scheduled between last Thursday and the end of the year, with three going to Burdekin Race Club and one to be hosted in Bowen.

“If we don’t take these meetings on, the horses don’t race, you’ve got jockeys, owners and trainers out of pocket, it’s a lot of money involved,” Mr Gudge said.

“By us taking the meetings on, it’s still generating money and it’s still available for punters to bet on.”

Burdekin Race Club has undergone its own improvements to get the track to a “TAB standard” but are discussing upgrades to facilities, including jockey and steward rooms, with Racing Queensland.

“Being in the Burdekin, with our supply of water, it’s not a problem to go out and water our track and keep it in top condition,” Mr Gudge said.

“We’ve upgraded both our running rails to the state-of-the-art PVC running rail so it’s safe for horses and jockeys, and our club has always done the right thing by our owners and trainers.

“We’re hoping that we will be considered as a back up to Townsville moving forward so if something does happen to go wrong with their track, they can always utilise Home Hill.”

The second biggest day on the club’s calendar, Scotty’s Memorial Derby Day, is coming up on Saturday, November 4, incorporating Ladies Day and Justin Scott, Russell Reguson and Bill (Cody) Prizeman Memorial Races.

Meetings are also scheduled for Tuesday, November 28, Saturday, December 9, and Thursday December 28, 2023.

Lower Burdekin Hockey’s Night Of Nights

October 11, 2023

In 1929, the Lower Burdekin Hockey Association, originally known as the Delta Hockey Club, had its modest beginnings. Thanks to the generosity of local businessman Stan Hall, the club was equipped with the necessary gear to kickstart its journey.

Initially, the club exclusively catered to male players, but as time went on, it expanded its horizons. Today, it boasts a diverse membership that includes not only men but also ladies and junior players.

In 2023, the club's primary focus centres on an indoor hockey competition running from April to September. This successful endeavour is made possible through the valued support of Ayr State High School.

The Lower Burdekin Hockey Association recently held its annual Presentation Night to celebrate this year’s outstanding performers.  A big congratulations to Quicksticks, who have improved their Wooden Spoon performance of 2022 to take out the Indoor Hockey Championship this year.

Each year the club awards both a Senior and Junior clubperson of the year.  This year’s Senior Club Person is Dirk Dabelstein.   Dirk started playing hockey as a junior, but at that time no high school competition existed so he had many years away from the sport.  Dirk became actively involved again in the early 2000s, playing himself but also introducing both his children to the sport.  He is critical to the ongoing success of our junior fixtures, running weekly coaching and game sessions with our junior players, having undertaken community coaching courses to support his role.  He has this year again proven to be a dedicated, passionate and involved member of the organisation.

Emily Johnston has been awarded the Junior Club Person for 2023.  Emily has only recently started her hockey journey, being selected in last year’s NQ Primary Schoolgirls team as the goalkeeper.  Emily is the first to offer assistance, with no job too difficult.  She is also developing her umpiring skills, having umpired both junior and senior games on occasion this year. She is enthusiastic, dependable and has a hunger to improve her skills in all facets of the game.

Other recipients were as follows:

Indoor Hockey Minor Premiers and Champions – Quicksticks

Indoor Hockey B Division Winners – Stick Handlers

Indoor Hockey Wooden Spoon – White Knights

Best and Fairest – Kasey Parison and Karl Dabelstein

Best Juniors – Ella Dabelstein and Cruz Torkington

Best Rookies – Jorja Grabs and Jarren Wood

Best Attacker – Kasey Parison

Best Defender – Bradley Sibson

Goal Shark – Lynette Gardner

The junior presentations were held last month to acknowledge the following players:

Most Improved U10 – Mack Grabs

Most Consistent U10 – Jacques Gardner

Most Improved U13 – Henry Smith

Most Consistent U13 – Charlie McCarthy

Junior Player’s Player – Ben Smail

Battling It Out At The Beach

October 11, 2023

Over the weekend, the Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club headed to the annual Forrest Beach Surf Carnival for two days of action-packed competition.

Their small contingent of 31 competitors battled it out in some very tough conditions with strong winds and waves with some amazing individual and team performances.
The members competed in beach events including flags, sprints and relays, and water events including surf race, board, ironman, tube race, wades, board rescues and multiple relays.

Taylor Chapman in Under 10s was the star of the show, bringing home gold in every individual event over the weekend and several relays, as well as competing up an age group for some team events.

President and coach Ben Lawry said that some of his other stand out performances over the weekend were the Under 10 girls bringing home a trifecta in their individual board race, with Taylor Chapman 1st, Charlotte Dale 2nd and Alexandra Moloney 3rd, and the Under 12 Surf Team of Milla Chapman, Cole Pontifex, Charlotte Lawry and Emma Jones putting in some great swims to bring home a win against some very strong competition by the Arcadian Club.

The Under 10s put in some dominating team performances winning their board relay (Luca Lawry, Charlotte Dale & Taylor Chapman) and wade relay (Lewis Bonato, Taylor Chapman, Luca Lawry, and Charlotte Dale).

The North Australian Championships is next on the carnival program for the U11s to Masters in a few weeks’ time, where competitors from all across northern Australia come together over 3 massive days for some tough competition.

AYR LADIES GOLF CLUB

October 11, 2023

Marisa and Sharon from Selections have once again shown their dedication to the Ayr Ladies Golf Competitions, earning the gratitude of all participants.

The course has witnessed some impressive performances lately, with the dry conditions providing extra run for the players. However, this week brought its own challenges as the greens received a sanding treatment, making putting a bit trickier.

Despite the obstacles, a new sensation in the B Grade category has emerged. Ingrid Vaes blazed her way to victory, delivering a stellar round with an impressive 41 points. Janet Trezise showcased her consistency by securing the runner-up spot with a commendable 36 points.

The accolades didn't stop there, with Angie Baxter, Betty Durrant, Pat Lawson, and Rhonda O’Brien earning well-deserved rundowns. Adding a touch of excitement, Bev Power clinched the title of lucky wheel winner.

Looking ahead, the anticipation is building for an exciting partner event scheduled for the upcoming Wednesday, generously sponsored by Dawn Cox. Golf enthusiasts are encouraged to team up with their partners and seize the opportunity for another great day on the greens.

Game, Set, Match: Tennis Back in Full Swing with Lighting Upgrade

October 11, 2023

Established in 1930, Ayr Tennis Association is back in the spotlight – with a fresh committee and brand-new lighting set up to allow for evening games.

Ayr Tennis Club offers Ladies Social Wednesdays, ‘Extremely Social’ Thursday nights, Junior Tournaments and Cardio Tennis.

In March this year, a new committee took over, reviving both the club and the social atmosphere.

Previously, the club was on the verge of closure and just five out of the fifteen lights worked across the eight courts.

This Thursday, however, was the club’s last game in the dark. With new lighting fixtures being installed, giving 24-hour access for day and night tennis matches.

At the moment, five out of ten courts are set up and it won’t be long until eight out of ten courts will be running with full lighting for evening matches.

Ayr Tennis Club has around seventy-five new members since their committee relaunch, with the junior side making up around fifty.

Local personality, Rob Slatcher, is the Club President and he said he is excited to see so many more juniors joining the ranks.

“The juniors are humming, really going good. It’s worth putting the A-grade players out,” he said.

“That’s the secret to any club, if you haven’t got juniors, you don’t have seniors.”

He went on to state, “Ayr has always been known as a ‘friendly venue’, we’re getting a lot of players coming back from retirement and having a great time.”

Bendigo Bank offered a $10,000 community grant, which was put towards the new lighting to update the club to its former glory.

Rob thanks the committee, helpers and the wider community for their involvement in getting Ayr Tennis Association back on the map, a dream that at one stage felt impossible.

Town Versus Town

October 11, 2023

The friendly yet passionate rivalry between Home Hill and Ayr was on show on Sunday, October 8 as Town of Origin pitted the two towns against each other in games of cricket, netball, and rugby league.

Home Hill Harvest Festival President Mark Vass said the event drew a bigger crowd than previous years, saying the committee was pleased with the day.

“As long as people keep turning up like that, we’ll keep putting it on,” he said.

“I’d like to really thank the community for supporting it and the players for keeping it going because without them, we’ve got nothing to go and watch.”

Sponsored by North Queensland Hardfacing and Burdekin Tyres, Town of Origin is one of many events held as part of the Home Hill Harvest Festival.

The next event, the Ironman Challenge, will be on Friday, October 20 at Watson’s Green, Home Hill.

Coach Congratulates U12 Wildcats On Stellar 2023 Season

October 4, 2023

A team filled with newcomers to the sport of basketball, the Burdekin Wildcat under 12 girls have done their region proud in the 2023 season.

With four representative players returning, six of the girls had not experienced representative basketball before with five being brand new to sport.

“Both as a team and as individuals we improved out of sight,” said Coach Kate Gaze.

“From our very first session as a group to where we ended the season, it really is a credit to the girls for all the hard work and extra sessions they put in during the year.”

Entering the North Queensland Junior Basketball Competition’s second division, the team only lost one game throughout the whole season.

“Throughout the season, we started off extremely strong and straight away we were the team to beat,” Ms Gaze said.

“The other teams all improved but so did we.

“During the season we were challenged, but the girls always kept their cool and never gave up.”

The team’s most recent challenge came when they travelled to Ipswich for State Championships, held from September 21 to 24.

The team placed fourth overall in Division 2, winning four of their five pool matches and going down by a narrow five points in the bronze medal decider.

“Our defence during the week is what I am proudest of,” Ms Gaze said.

“It was clear each player was concentrating and thinking about what they have been taught during the season, and they should be very proud of the growth and improvement they demonstrated in each game.”

Ms Gaze congratulated the team for their 2023 success and said she is proud to be their coach.

“This team stuck together all season, trained hard, supported each other and were great teammates and friends,” she said.

“I wish each player all the best and hope they continue to play this wonderful game and continue to represent the Burdekin Wildcats with pride.”
