Burdekin Touch Football Junior Girls Shine

The U12 school girls recently represented the Burdekin at the NQ Touch Football trials carnival in Airlie Beach. Playing five games over two days the girls competed against Whitsunday, Herbert River, Charters Towers and Townsville with a mixed bag of a win, a draw and some very narrow losses. Drawing on their experience from the Junior State Cup, the girls' skills were on show with strong sliding defence, excellent rucking and some creative line attack. Following the round games two Burdekin players, Taylor Chapman and Bethana Rattler were named in the possibles and probables resulting in Taylor's selection in the NQ U12 team. Taylor was also awarded the Heather Desbois medal for the Burdekin's Best and Fairest. "All 12 girls should feel proud of the way they represented the Burdekin. They are a team on the rise, showing huge improvements," said team Manager Petrina Wellington. CAPTION: Taylor Chapman was awarded the Heather Desbois medal for the Burdekin's Best and Fairest. MEMBERS GATHER TO SAY FAREWELL TO RESIDENT CARETAKER

On Saturday 16 May 2026, around 50 Home Hill Bowls Club members and visitors gathered to farewell resident caretaker Warren Bunn, known as “Yougi”. Yougi has been caretaker for approximately 30 months, commencing 15 November 2023. At that time, he had played only one game of bowls in the Burdekin, but living alongside the green quickly saw him develop into a capable player. By 2024, he was selected to represent the club in NQ Pennants. Now approaching 83, Yougi is relocating to Brisbane to be closer to family and will live with his youngest daughter. The club extends its best wishes and hopes he finds a new bowling club to join. On the day, five rinks of triples were played. The overall winners on margins were Alex Bojack, Jo Roser and Bob Young. Wednesday night featured a mix of social lawn bowls and the Home Hill Hot Shots darts club. The evening remains popular for its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Hot Shots advise that Darts of Origin begins 27 May 2026, followed by the first of three Origin raffles at Friday night 8 Ball. All community members are welcome. Bowls names in by 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start (Ph 0468 313 115). Darts start 6.00pm (Ph Scott 0480 208 335). Thursday afternoon club bowls hosted four games of triples and two pairs matches, marking the start of the club pairs championships. Visiting bowlers were welcomed from Jarvis Bay (NSW), Bathurst, and Elliott Heads. Pairs results: Rink 2 saw Bruce McCallum and Janet Arthur defeated by Scott Taylor and Paul Vass in a close match. Rink 4 went to Mick McClusker and Alex Bojack over Phil Marsden and Bob Pickard. Rink 3 saw Trevor Elton’s team defeat Geoff Taylor’s side by a solid margin. Rink 5 went to Joe Linton, Des Chapman and Warren Bunn. Rink 6 was won by Gary Nosworthy’s team. Rink 7 saw Hugh Montgomery’s team defeat Keith Roser and John Hobson’s side. The club congratulates all winners and participants. Raffle results: John Hobson won the breakfast tray, and Maureen Marsden won the bottle of wine. ROOSTERS GRIT IT OUT ON THE ROAD DESPITE INJURY CRISIS AND CLOSE FINISHES

ROOSTERS GRIT IT OUT ON THE ROAD DESPITE INJURY CRISIS AND CLOSE FINISHES

The Burdekin Roosters were on the road again last weekend, travelling to Charters Towers on Saturday with A Grade and Reserve Grade, and then to Bushland Beach on Sunday for the Under 19s. In their wisdom, the BLTD has created a separate draw for Under 19s, meaning clubs are being split up, as was the case with the Roosters last weekend. Charters Towers are always hard to beat on their home ground, and it was no exception, with the Roosters getting up in the dying stages to beat the Miners. A Grade coach Steve Lansley was a happy man after the match, saying his players showed plenty of character in coming from behind to beat the Miners in front of a huge crowd during Ladies Day. Lansley said the Burdekin Roosters produced another gritty come-from-behind performance to defeat the Towers Miners 28–20, overcoming a frustrating night of errors and missed opportunities. Dropped balls at crucial stages repeatedly handed the Miners valuable field position and piled pressure on the Roosters’ defence, making the task tougher than it needed to be. Despite the setbacks, the Roosters refused to panic and worked their way back through tough carries and relentless middle-third effort. The forwards laid the platform in the second half, dominating the physical battle and swinging momentum back in Burdekin’s favour. Best for the Roosters were Jye Olsen, Nemia Nawave and Lachlan Shepherd, all playing key roles in the hard-fought win. Jye was awarded Players’ Player. For the Roosters, Malik Ogameni, Terry Connors, Nash Beck, Lach Bachbach and Nemia Nawave scored tries, with Jye Olsen kicking four goals. In other A Grade results, Brothers beat Centrals 28–12, Souths beat Norths 42–18, and Western Lions upset Herbert River 30–18. Lack of numbers did not help the Roosters Reserve Grade, going down 20–12 to a full-strength Miners side. Coach Peter Horan said he travelled with only three on the bench, compared to the home side’s six, and “that makes a difference”. He estimated around 12 players were unavailable through injury. Harvey Horan was again a standout, with Jahi Starr, Luca Lago and Bokeem Moore Reid also strong performers. Ron Geia and Dylan Doak also contributed well. For the Roosters, Jahi Starr and Ron Geia scored tries, with Dylan Doak kicking two goals. In other Reserve Grade matches, Centrals beat Brothers 18–10, Souths defeated Norths 38–12, and Western Lions beat Herbert River 19–16. On Sunday, the Under 19s had a tough match against Norths at Bushy Beach, going down 18–14 in a topsy-turvy contest. Roosters coach Alf Cantarella said it was a difficult game, with only two on the bench and no bench left after injuries. The Roosters dug in but were overrun in the final 30 seconds. Jacob Drain captained the side well, with Chad Fraser named Man of the Match. “We were really down on players and didn’t get the two points,” Cantarella said. The Roosters also spent time down to 12 men after a send-off, with Norths scoring twice during that period. Jack Power, Callum Taiters and Romeo scored tries, with Chad Fraser adding a goal. In other Under 19 results, Brothers beat Centrals 24–4 and Herbert River defeated Western Lions 58–0. In the women’s competition, Western Lions defeated Charters Towers 62–0, Centrals beat Brothers 20–8, and Souths defeated Norths 56–4. This week, the RLTD has a rest round for all teams except Burdekin and Herbert River Under 19, who meet at Bendigo Park in Ayr on Friday night from 6.30pm in a delayed fixture. Fixtures resume Saturday 6 June in Ingham across three grades. Contributed with thanks to Brian Carnes

Canetoads Prepare for Crucial Showdown

August 29, 2024

Burdekin Rugby Union Club’s Canetoads are gearing up for a do-or-die clash this weekend after experiencing mixed results in last weekend’s semi-finals. With the pressure mounting, the Cantoads’ Coach reflected on the team's performance during a recent radio appearance on Sweet FM, offering insights into what went right, what went wrong, and how they plan to move forward.

In the First Grade match, the Canetoads struggled to find their rhythm against Brothers, who quickly capitalised on Burdekin’s slow start. The Coach acknowledged that Brothers came well-prepared, as they often do in finals, catching the Canetoads off guard with their unpredictable style of play.

“We started off slowly, and Brothers took advantage of that,” the Coach explained.

“They put too many on us early, and we couldn’t come back.”

The final score stood at 26-15 in favour of Brothers, leaving the Canetoads to regroup ahead of their next encounter with North Ward. Looking ahead to that critical game, the Cantoads’ Coach emphasised the importance of preparation, focus, and controlling the game from the outset.

“We need to be prepared, travel well, and maintain a good mindset - It’s do or die this weekend.

The boys need to be ready and control the game early, and if we can handle their big forward pack, the outcome will be in our favour.”

In contrast, the Reserve Grade team delivered a solid performance, starting strong and keeping the pressure on North Ward. Their Coach was impressed with their energy and execution, though he gave credit to the opposition for keeping the game close. The final score was 14-12 in favour of the Canetoads.

“They came out of the blocks firing and played really well, but credit to North Ward for keeping the scoreline as close as they did.”

Looking ahead to their rematch against Brothers, the Toads’ Coach identified a few areas that need improvement. The focus, he said, would be on minimising errors, staying composed, and maintaining possession.

“They need to rectify small errors and not force it.

Fault-free footy and aggression will enable the boys to play in the Grand Final the following week.”

There was also cause for celebration within the club, as Tubby Heron was named TDRU A Grade Player of the Year for 2024. Heron’s stellar performance throughout the season earned him this prestigious honour, and the Canetoads couldn’t be prouder of their star player.

With both teams now preparing for what could be their final games of the season, the Canetoads are determined to give it their all. First Grade will face North Ward in a must-win match, while Reserve Grade seeks to secure their Grand Final berth against Brothers. If they can maintain focus, discipline, and composure, both teams could be on the cusp of something special.

Contributed with thanks to the Burdekin Rugby Union Canetoads.

The results from last weekend’s semi-final clash will fuel the Canetoads’ fire for this weekend’s games.
Congratulations to Tubby Heron for taking out TDRUs A Grade Player of The Year.

Roosters Rule!

August 29, 2024

The Burdekin Roosters A Grade team put together a complete performance, much to the delight of coach Steve Lansley. Reflecting on his team’s 14-12 victory over Herbert River at Rugby Park last Saturday night.

"We have been trying for some time to put things together for eighty minutes, and it was nice for the boys to see it finally happen,” said Lansley.

The tightly contested match featured strong defence and smart attacking play from both sides. The Roosters and Herbert River each scored two tries, with all conversions successful. It was a penalty kick with three minutes remaining, courtesy of captain Joel Mason, that secured the Roosters' win.

The defensive effort from both teams was notable, with big hits and crucial ankle tackles throughout the game. Lansley credited his forwards for laying the foundation, allowing the smaller players to capitalize on opportunities.

He praised Herbert River for their typical style of hard running, strong support play, and minimal mistakes.

"I told the boys they make few errors, and when they do, we had to capitalize... to their credit, they did," Lansley added.

Although it was difficult for the coach to single out standout players, he highlighted the performances of Henry Teuteu and Chris Gale in the forward pack, along with Lachlan Shepherd, who had a stellar game. Lansley also commended Roto Ravisore as one of the better backs and noted Joel Mason's vocal leadership from fullback. James Munro, returning from injury, was outstanding despite being denied a try that Lansley believed should have counted.

Burdekin Roosters A Grade:
- Tries: Tate Brombal, Ratu Kikau
- Goals: Joel Mason (3/3)

Other A-Grade Results:
- Souths defeated Brothers 30-14
- Charters Towers defeated Centrals 38-4
- Western Lions defeated Norths 64-10

Roosters Reserve Grade coach Chris Perry expressed frustration after his team let a strong start slip away.

"We led 12-0 and looked like going away with it before the calls started going the way of the River," Perry said.

Experienced Herbert River halfback Mitch Seri led his team with two tries, and Perry expressed disbelief at the officiating.

"How one team can get six 'six again' calls go against them, and the other team gets none, is beyond belief,” said Perry.

He noted that the lopsided penalty count caused frustration, leading to mistakes that Herbert River capitalized on.

Despite leading 12-6 at halftime, the Roosters ultimately fell 34-22. Perry praised Caleb Noah for scoring two tries and Brody Ferguson for his efforts in the forwards. The team is now focused on preparing for their knockout semi-final against Centrals this Sunday.

Burdekin Reserves:
- Tries: Caleb Noah (2), Sem Tom, Dominic Arrate
- Goals: Dominic Arrate (3)

**Other Reserve Grade Results:**
- Souths defeated Brothers 30-14
- Centrals defeated Charters Towers 58-22
- Norths defeated Western Lions 34-14
- Bowen had a bye

The Burdekin Hens received a forfeit from Herbert River and will face Brothers in the knockout semi-final this Sunday. In other ladies’ news, the club has announced Tegan Johnson will represent the Roosters in the upcoming annual Harvest Festival.

Other Ladies' Results:
- Centrals defeated Charters Towers 34-4
- Western Lions defeated Norths 72-0

Caleb Noah was praised for scoring two tries on Saturday in the Reserves’ clash against Herbert River.

The Home Hill Golf Club's Sip 'n Putt ‘Come and Try’ sessions, initiated by Megan Barbagallo, are becoming a popular event for women of all golfing abilities. These free sessions offer a welcoming environment for participants to enjoy golf while socializing with others.
On Saturday, 17 August, 12 women gathered at the club to enjoy a day of sport, sunshine, and camaraderie under the expert guidance of PGA Professional Tara Jenkins. Tara, who began playing golf at the age of 10, has since developed her skills on the Sunshine Coast and earned her place in the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) by age 20.
“I spent most of my golfing years in the Burdekin before traveling extensively as I developed in the sport,” Tara explained, reflecting on her journey. As a qualified PGA professional, Tara has the credentials to coach, compete, and work in various roles within the golf industry.
The Sip 'n Putt sessions aim to empower women to explore golf in a relaxed, social setting. With a focus on fun and friendship, each session concludes with drinks and conversation. Since the first event on 20 July, the sessions have attracted women of all skill levels, including some complete beginners.
Tara’s next session on Saturday, 14 September, will guide participants through the use of drivers, with the goal of preparing them for a few rounds on the course during the final session on 12 October.
“There’s no need to be nervous; everyone is still learning. I invite ladies to come along and just have some fun,” Tara encouraged
