SUGAR RUSH HITS NEW HEIGHTS

SUGAR RUSH HITS NEW HEIGHTS

The Burdekin’s premier running event saw a record-breaking turnout on Sunday, 26 April, as nearly 400 athletes laced up in Ayr for what was a Sugar Rush for the books. The 24th edition of the Burdekin Road Runners and Walkers Club’s signature running event saw its previous participation record of 320 smashed, with around 392 runners taking part. Club president Patrick Shannon hailed the event as a success for both the organisation and the wider North Queensland running community. “We’re chuffed with the turnout,” Mr Shannon said. “It was a bit unfortunate—we actually had to cut off entries a little bit early simply because we ran out of bibs. It just means we have to plan bigger and better next year.” Continued on page 28 Massive Field Powers Sugar Rush To New Record In Ayr Continued from cover The event attracted competitors from as far north as Cairns and south as Mackay, alongside families and first-time runners in shorter distance fun runs. Jeff Rubach of the Townsville Road Runners won the men’s half marathon in 1:15:08, while Vanessa Kennedy of Hungry Runners took out the women’s title in 1:27:15. Matt Hutchinson led the men’s 10km field in 35:51, with Brittany Hutchinson winning the women’s race in 40:26. Miles Kerr claimed the men’s 5km title in 20:18, while Mia Brunker of the PACE Project won the women’s event in 20:46. Each runner received a complimentary barbecue breakfast courtesy of the Ayr Rotary Club, while MC John Furnell entertained supporters at the finish line at the Ayr War Memorial. Mr Shannon said the memorial backdrop capped off the morning, the culmination of months of preparation. “There was a lot of work put in over the last three to five months… But to see the community coming out, the amazing weather, and the day after Anzac Day, having the monument behind us, was a really good feeling.” FULL RESULTS Half Marathon—Men Jeff Rubach (Townsville Road Runners) — 1:15:08 Grant Breadsell Aaron Bathis Half Marathon—Women Vanessa Kennedy (Hungry Runners) — 1:27:15 Liv Compton (Whitsunday Running Club) Elizabeth Maguire (Hungry Runners) 10km—Men Matt Hutchinson — 35:51 Sonny O’Rourke Brendan Maltby 10km—Women Brittany Hutchinson — 40:26 Anwen Mackay Isla Chapman 5km—Men Miles Kerr — 20:18 Nathan Barrett Brad Patti 5km—Women Mia Brunker (PACE Project) — 20:46 Bec Stedman Skye Claussen CAPTIONS: Back—The 24th edition of the Burdekin Road Runners and Walkers Club’s signature running event saw its previous participation record of 320 smashed, with around 392 runners taking part. 2—Jeff Rubach of the Townsville Road Runners won the men’s half marathon in 1:15:08. 3—Vanessa Kennedy of Hungry Runners took out the women’s title in 1:27:15. Football Matters with Cyclops 30th April

Football Matters with Cyclops 30th April

Seniors A better weekend for the Burdekin Panthers. The Club had only four senior games winning three and losing one. The Premiers and Reserve, away to Riverway JCU, won 2-1 and the Reserves, also away to JCU also won 2-1, The Division 1, at home to rebels lost 3-6 but the Division 2, also at home to Rebels won 3-0. The Colts and Ladies both had byes. This week only four teams are in action as both Ladies and Colts have byes. On Friday, the Division 1 and Division 2 are away to Olympic, at 8.30 and 6.30 and on Saturday the Premiers and Reserves are away to Warriors at 7.00 and 3.00. The Colts and Ladies do not have games this week. Premiers – Ayr Anzac Club An away trip to JCU is never easy, and after dropping points the previous week, there was added motivation to respond. JCU started strongly, limiting the Panthers time on the ball and making it difficult to find any rhythm early. The first half produced few clear chances, with JCU capitalising late to take a 1–0 lead into the break. The second half saw a renewed energy from the Panthers, while JCU looked to sit deeper and protect their advantage. This shift allowed Burdekin to dominate possession and build pressure in dangerous areas. The Panthers came close on many occasions, including a strike off the crossbar, before Elliott Dal Santo found the breakthrough with a well-taken finish following strong defensive work in the lead-up. Pushing for a winner, Kyle Taylor earned a penalty in the 87th minute, and Jake Siandri stepped up to calmly convert and give the Panthers a 2–1 lead which they held onto in the closing stages to secure a hard-fought result. That’s three wins from their opening four rounds. Reserves – Burdekin Tyre Service Another week and another changed side saw the Reserves debut opportunity for young players Charlie Predebon & Nyasha Gwarada. It was a very warm afternoon game and developed into a good contest with both teams working hard but neither finding any dominance in possession or field position. It took until the last five minutes of the first half for a goal to come from a longer range freekick and JCU went into the break one up. The second half for the Panthers was much better with senior players able to influence the game and keep better possession of the ball. With improved possession and control Burdekin were able to score two goals from Jonte Grazioli and Dom Arrate. It was a gritty game that in previous seasons the Panthers may have let slip, so very pleasing to turn it around and notch up another win. Division 1 – Austral Masonry Against Rebel, both teams and goals started fast, with two goals from Julen Arrate being answered by two from Rebels in the first eighteen minutes. At half time it was 2-2. After that Burdekin got stuck into the grind with tackles flying everywhere. Then a penalty to Rebels and second yellow card for Brad Wright tipped the balance, with Rebels side scoring two goals in quick succession. Cody Scalia headed in a beautiful Charlie Shears corner to give the Burdekin a chance, but with only ten men, it was too much of a struggle The game ended 6-3 to Rebels. Division 2 – RG Customs RG Customs 2nd division defeated Rebels 3-0 in a match they dominated from start to finish. Chris Achille gave Burdekin the lead early in the first half, but despite lots of possession and repeatedly attacking Rebels goal, the Funkies were unable to extend their lead in the first half. Burdekin added further goals through Simon Scuderi after 68 minutes and Fengil after 84 minutes in the second half to see the Funkies rewarded for their efforts and deserving winners in a match they controlled very much from start to finish. Next up is MA Olympic this Friday night away in Townsville. Masters The Masters had another good turnout and, augmented by the Ladies Squad had a replay of the World Cup Qualifier, Italy v Bosnia Herzegovina. A tight match ended in a 2-2 draw with a replay next Monday. Best players on the night were Charley Ruskin and Riley Granshaw. The Masters play every Monday night. All players are welcome, male, and female, useful and hopeless, halt and lame. Be there, International Park for 6.30 Kick off. Juniors Junior soccer returned in great spirit over the Anzac Day weekend, marking the first round of games following the school holiday break. Our youngest players in the U5–U7 age groups took to the field on Saturday afternoon, enjoying local matches filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and plenty of smiles. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces back and eager to play. Sunday saw an exciting milestone for the U8–U12 teams, who travelled to Townsville for their first games of the season. The step up in competition didn’t deter our players, with all teams showing determination and great sportsmanship throughout the day. It was a wonderful way to kick off the return to soccer, with strong participation across all age groups and a positive start to the term ahead. The U15's had their first game at the weekend against Wulguru. A new coach, a few new players and whole lot of enthusiasm. A bit of nervous energy to start with the first goal being scored by the opposition, but the team went in at half time with a 2-1 lead. Goals for the Panthers scored by Annan Power and Nathan Casella. The team lost Linc Innes due to a nasty clash with their keeper which depleted the bench with only one sub. The second half saw the team digging deep to secure three more goals. One of the new Panthers, Cecil Badza Gwarda scoring two and Emmanuel Mio banging in the final goal for the Panthers to secure a convincing win 5-2. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a break before their next round on the 16 May. An excited U13 Burdekin Panthers team took the field for the first time this season again MA Olympic. The Panthers came away with a very good 3-0 win with two goals from. 2 Caelan Farrell and one from Jazz Chung. All players played outstanding football!! National The A League Men’s season has reached the final stages. Newcastle have won the Premiership; five points clear of Adelaide with Auckland third and Melbourne Victory fourth. The Elimination Finals start on Saturday with Auckland playing Melbourne City and Victory playing Sydney FC. The A League Women are at the Semi-finals stage. Challenging Conditions at the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Nipper and Youth Australian Championships

April 2, 2025

The 2025 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships began at North Kirra on the Gold Coast, with the Nipper and Youth Championships on 29-30 March. Harsh weather led to water event cancellations and a reduced beach program. Ayr Surf Club’s seven youth competitors performed well despite event limitations. Bella Lawry & Briella Wassmuth and Charlotte Lawry & Emilee Wassmuth placed 6th in their R&R finals, with Bella & Briella as the top Queensland team. Other members excelled in beach and ocean events. The season ends with the Championships, but patrols continue until May, with a new season starting in July.

The 2025 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships kicked off on the weekend at North Kirra on the Gold Coast, with the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Nipper and Youth Championships taking place on the 29th & 30th March.

This annual event where members from the 314 Surf Clubs across Australia come together to compete in more than 480 beach and ocean events, is the largest event of its kind, only comparing the likes of the Commonwealth Games. Wet and wild conditions greeted competitors on the opening day of the Championships, with all water events cancelled and a limited number of beach events run in horrendous conditions after the program was revised.

Delays in the start of competition had competitors nervously waiting for their opportunity at a national title and the uncertainty of proceedings and conditions making for a very unsettled morning. Beach flags and R&R were the only events that could be held as part of day one youth competition, with the youngsters battling the wild winds and rain.

The seven youth members from the Ayr Surf Club - Isla Chapman, Bella Lawry, Briella Wassmuth, Zachary Dale, Milla Chapman, Charlotte Lawry and Emilee Wassmuth - all had a very solid carnival with the limited events they were able to partake in due to the shortened program.

Both the 2 Person R&R teams: U14/15s - Bella Lawry & Briella Wassmuth & U13/14s - Charlotte Lawry & Emilee Wassmuth, had strong performances in their heats to advance to the finals and both teams placed 6th in some very close and tough competition, with only a handful of points separating all teams and several countbacks to determine placings. Bella & Briella were the top Queensland team in their competition which was taken out by Brighton SLSC, and Charlotte & Emilee were the 4th Queensland team, with the top 3 QLD teams taking out the medals; Redcliffe, Burleigh and Townsville-Picnic Bay respectively.

The other 3 members took to the ocean and beach for their events, having to choose between specific events due to clashes in the revised program and missing additional events which were cancelled due to further deteriorating conditions on Sunday and all 3 youth members performed exceptionally well and should be proud of their efforts.

The Australian Championships brings the 2024/25 competition season to a close, however beaches will still be patrolled across Queensland until the end of the May Day long weekend and a new season of lifesaving for both Juniors and Seniors will be kicking off at the end of July. If you are interested in joining the Ayr Surf Club, please contact ayrslsc@gmail.com or the Ayr Surf Club Public.

April 2, 2025

After persistent rain, bowlers finally had their chance to return to the green at Brandon, with competitive action kicking off on Friday night. The A & B Pairs final saw Jayson Farry and Jamie Woods prove too strong for Gary Pearce and Lloyd Shepherd, securing a decisive victory.

Saturday 29th March – A Grade Singles

Championship events continued on Saturday with a highly anticipated second-round A Grade Singles clash between two powerhouses, Peter Lejarraga and Vince Beitia. The match was finely balanced, but in-form Lejarraga shone on the green, sealing his place in the next round.

Sunday 30th March – Championship & Social Bowls

Sunday saw 30 bowlers take to the green for a mix of championship and social bowls.

In the A Grade Singles, a family rivalry took centre stage as Gary Pearce faced his son, Chris, for annual bragging rights. Chris took an early lead, but Gary’s experience ultimately prevailed as he edged a narrow victory.

The A Grade Pairs second-round match between Lloyd Shepherd and Kevin Collins against Gary Nosworthy and Trevor Elton was another tightly contested encounter. Shepherd and Collins emerged victorious, progressing to the next round.

Social bowls also saw competitive play, with several matches producing impressive performances:

Bruce McCallum & Richie Mau defeated Henry Hazel & Jamie Woods.

Sandra Darween, Hugh Montgomery & Peter Jorgensen overcame Ken Ferguson, Lyn Storrie & Ray Paneccasio.

Juniors Return To Action At Home Hill Junior Cricket

April 2, 2025

The grounds at the Nutrien Ag Solutions Cricket Complex dried up enough for play to go ahead last Friday.  The partnerships of Aria and Corbett and Jai and Nahjiyah produced 19 runs each in the Challengers.  Nahjiyah also took two wickets with his great fast bowling, as did Olivia in her overs.  Harvey, Lincoln, Aria, Everly, Claire and Corbett all took one each.  The McDonalds Sports Awards were given to Nahjiyah for his great bowling and Everly for an excellent all-round performance.

It was an exciting game in the "Blue Group" with Jude dominating with the bat and the ball.  He made 26 runs which included 4 fours, took six wickets in an exceptional spell of bowling and got a runout.  His first over was a double wicket maiden and his second was an unbelievable 4 for 1 run.  He got a hattrick in this over and was one ball away from a double hattrick. Other notable mentions go to Jake who made 20 runs and Mason scored 12 runs not out.  Kip, Tait, Mitchell, Mason and Mazlyn all took one wicket each and Mazlyn got four runouts.  Not surprisingly one of the McDonalds Sports Awards went to Jude, and the other to Mason.

Wickets and runs were shared by all of the players in the "Gold" game, Marshall made 12 not out and Mark on 11 runs also unbeaten.  Tyler, Oliver, Xavier, Marshall and Logan took one wicket each and catches were taken by Mark and Ben.  Ben's catch was a sharp one in the slips.  Marshall took home the McDonalds Sports Award for his all-round effort.

Home Hill Has A Crack At Bowen Major 4rs Tournament

March 27, 2025

The weekend saw two days of competitive and social bowls as teams from across the region gathered for a highly anticipated tournament. Players travelled from Townsville, Mackay, Airlie Beach, Giru, Brandon, and Proserpine to take part, with plenty of skill and camaraderie on display.

Among the competitors was Wayne Carroll, a veteran of the tournament who has been participating for an impressive 34 years. Now representing a Mackay team, Wayne first took part at the age of 36 and, still fit as a fiddle, hopes to continue competing for many years to come.

During the presentations, organisers made special mention of the Home Hill Bowls Club, noting it was heartening to see the club thriving and their bowlers supporting such major events once again. Both Home Hill teams bowled exceptionally well and did their club proud.

In the end, congratulations went to Steve Montin’s team, who claimed the tournament title after a strong performance over the two days. It was a fantastic weekend of bowls, with players already looking forward to next year’s event.

Peto Marine Clinch Minor Premiership Over Rookies In Senior Cricket Showdown

March 28, 2025

The last round of the Home Hill Senior Cricket season saw the top two teams, the Rookies and Peto Marine, take to the field to decide the minor premiership.

Andrew Ballin (retired 53 runs not out) and Josiah Ballin (44 runs) led the way for the Peto Marine innings after being sent in to bat.  Brad Parravicini contributed 18 runs before being caught by the safe hands of Brock Gorey. Dan Olditch (3 wickets for 17 runs off 2.4 overs) and Salvatore Cardillo (2 wickets for 2 runs off 2 overs) did the most damage with the ball for the Rookies to have Petos all out for 173 runs.

The Rookies struggled to attain the required run rate as they chased the total.  Lee Watts (36 runs) and Dan Olditch (17 runs) top scored for the Rookies, but 2 wickets for 3 runs (3 overs) a piece to both Brad Parravicini and Josiah Ballin took care of the rest. Peto Marine took the win with the Rookies finishing the day 8/104.

The Senior Cricket season wraps up with the Grand Final and end of season presentations next Saturday 29 March.  The Rookies and Peto Marine we have a rematch in the final, with Alliance Pharmacy and Crowned Mongrels playing off for third place.  Details for the finals and presentations will be announced on the Home Hill Cricket Association facebook page.

Roosters Set for Season Launch as Club Prepares to Celebrate Historic Milestones

April 2, 2025

Although the weather in the Burdekin was pleasant on  Saturday, the scheduled match with Bowen had been called off on Thursday due to the state of  the field.
The Roosters will have their season launch this  coming Saturday night at the Queens Hotel the major sponsor of the league.

Fixtures in the R L T D are to start the following weekend with the Roosters  to host Norths from Townsville in four grades on Saturday April 5.
Apart from playing games, club members will be involved in other activities during the season.

The popular Ladies Day will be held on Saturday July 19 when the Roosters will host Brothers in four grades.

This  season will see the Old  Boys  celebrate two important milestones for the Club.
After being accepted into the T D R L as a club, the Burdekin had to wait till 2000 until it won its first A Grade premiership at the Sport Reserve.
The win that year was a milestone for the locals  as, even though they had played in a couple of Foley Shield finals  at the ground  they had never won an A grade trophy there.
Chris  Perry was appointed coach  of  the team with John Di Bella and Troy Kovacich as managers.

The club decided to import P N G International Andrew Norman  while the Cowboys allotted Kiwi fullback John Andrews from their Young  Guns programme.

On top of those players  a number of  others had returned home after playing in other centres .. Brad Parravicini from Wynnum Manly, Jason Barnett from Darwin, Tarin Braford from the Cowboys, and Terry Parison from Brothers.

The team also had two of the hardest men of  the time in North Queensland football in Charlie Cole and Damien Lynch  and one of the fastest wingers around in Damien Quinn who scored a record 29 tries for the club that season.

The hard working  lock Jeff Linton was also in the forwards with many considering Jeff as hard done by not receiving a Cowboys contract.

Steve Perrett was the trainer of the team and  he made many enemies during the season with the work he made the boys  go through.

That animosity turned to praise when the game ended in a draw and extra time had to be played .. the Roosters were fitter and it showed in that extra time over Brothers.

Come the day in September and hundreds of  local supporters made their way to the Sports Reserve to cheer on their favourite team .. 14 busses were filled with so many cars, it was said  the highway resembled the Gold Coast highway on the way home with so much traffic.
The players went by bus  and on arriving home to Rugby Park they were greeted by hundreds of supporters enjoying the hospitality of the Lifesavers.

A  couple of the players were surfed into the ground  by the crowd .. a la Alfie Langer style.

The team that day from 1 to 17 was ..... John Andrews, Damien Quinn, Tarin Bradford, Joel Bulgarelli, Terry Parison, Brad Parravicini, Josh Henaway, Jason Barnett, Deon Duell, Damien Lynch, Andrew Norman, Daniel Donovan, Jeff Linton .... Garth Taiters, Ross Olsen, Charlie Cole, Chris Hanlon.

Many of that team backed up in 2001 when the Club created another record... undefeated in A grade for the whole season.

2025 also marks ten years since the Club has won the A grade premiership in Townsville.
In another edition we shall relive the memories of  that occasion  as it is to be celebrated later this year.

Roosters News

March 20, 2025

A man of the match performance by former Papua New Guinea International front rower Aiden Arusa helped the Roosters record a 26 nil won over the Bowen Seagulls at Denison Park in Bowen last Saturday.

Arusa ,who has played four seasons  with the PN G Hunters in the Host plus Cup, showed his vast experience by leading the young Roosters  around the park in defence and attack last Saturday.

The match, which is played each year, honours the playing days of former Bowen and Burdekin player Lona Kaifoto who helped lead the Roosters to their last A grade premiership in the T D R l in 2015..

Roosters coach Steve Lansley said it was a good hit out for his  squad which was made up of mainly reserve grade players with a few A graders and under 20 players as well.
Lansley said the best part about the trial was we never let them score a point in the 26 nil win.

He said while Aiden was a standout he wasnt far ahead of a number of players including new signing Jesse Yallop who ran at five eight.

Yallop is normally a winger and is one of the fastest men in the competition but he showed he is quite at home in the halves as well.

Yallop and Luca Lago combined well in the halves feeding the outside men where centre Terry Connors  scored two tries and winger Nemia Nawave one.

Dylan Doak played at hooker and his service from dummy half proved valuable .. Dylan also kicked three from five with the boot.

Caleb Noah in the centres proved to be a hard  man to stop with John  Zaro one of the better forwards.

Both teams used unlimited interchange with the Roosters running 20 players and Bowen 25.
Both clubs will meet again on Saturday March 22 at Rugby Park in both A grade and under 20.
This will give patrons the chance to inspect the new two million dollar dressing shed complex, enjoy the new lighting system and goal posts.

There will be a new entrance to the grounds with toilets included in the new complex or as they now stand.

The old dressing sheds, which have been there for close on 70 years, are to be demolished.
