Lighting Up The Burdekin

Lighting Up The Burdekin

Jeff and Leon’s Christmas Tradition Christmas cheer has blossomed in the Burdekin once again, and the beloved Christmas Lights Guys have continued to wow and delight the region, keeping one of the community’s most treasured traditions alive for almost two decades. Jeff Lunn and Leon McCormack first began decorating their Home Hill home in 2007, but it wasn’t until they moved across the bridge and unveiled their display in Ayr that things truly took off. “It started to pick up in about 2010 after we moved, and it has just gotten bigger, and bigger, and bigger every year as we add extra display pieces to keep things fresh, different and exciting,” Jeff explained. Childhood memories are what initially inspired the pair to ignite what has become such a beautiful local tradition, however, it’s the joy Jeff and Leon see across the faces of everyone who stops by that keeps the pair excited. “Seeing the children, families and the community enjoying themselves and having a good time continues to excite us and that’s all it’s really about and we love having people come around to see the lights,” enthused Jeff. “Growing up in Newcastle, we would do Christmas light drives as a family with mum and dad, and our inspiration to put on these displays has just drawn on from that and from the enjoyment we see from the kids when they come around, and what the whole community gets out of what we do.” What once began as a humble light display, has evolved into a community-oriented festive extravaganza, complete with a radio channel featuring perfectly synchronised tunes to accompany the magic of the dancing lights. Annually, hundreds of visitors flock to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to experience the magical display, while for six months of the year Jeff and Leon work behind the scenes, preparing to outdo the previous year’s spectacle. “Our enjoyment also comes from keeping busy,” added Jeff. “The displays certainly keep us on our toes, and that’s how we like it, we love to keep busy.” In July, the cogs start turning as Jeff and Leon sit down to plan what will stay, what will go, and what will make its debut this festive season, placing orders left, right and centre to ensure everything will arrive in time for the end of year extravaganza. Sunlight streams into Jeff and Leon’s four bay car garage in mid to late August, as the pair roll up the doors and their sleeves to test each and every bulb across thousands of lights in preparation for large-scale display. As late September ticks around, the pair are in full spooky season mode, putting together a wonderfully witching Halloween display, complete with a classic trick or treat dress up party to round out the month of October. With that holiday behind them, Jeff and Leon pack away the frights, and unpack the festive delights, working as hard as a North Pole elf on Christmas Eve to have the house looking ship shape from the 1st of November. On the 23rd of December and of course, Christmas Eve, Santa himself will make an appearance, perched up in his bright red sleigh, ready for family photos from about 7pm onwards. The grill will be up and running, serving up a delicious sausage sizzle, and complimentary popcorn, fairy floss and snow cones will also be on offer to add to the festivities. Jeff and Leon cannot wait to delight the community for the 18th year with their wonderful display, and hope to see plenty of families pop on over to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to catch a glimpse of the magic this festive season.

Fast Track To Fame Winner Takes Sydney By Storm

Fast Track To Fame Winner Takes Sydney By Storm

Blake Hanks, winner of this year’s NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase in Ayr, has taken his first steps onto the national stage after performing at Sydney’s Double Bay Christmas Carols on the 23rd of November alongside some of Australia’s biggest names. The 17-year-old Airlie Beach performer, who boasts a strong track record in school musicals, eisteddfods, and talent competitions, was awarded the prestigious Fast Track award in March for his impressive vocal talent. His victory earned him an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney, including a mentoring session with acclaimed performer Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters, California Crooners Club), and the opportunity to showcase his talents to the nation. Blake opened the Double Bay Christmas Carols with festive favourites Holly Jolly Christmas and Winter Wonderland, later performing Last Christmas. He shared the stage with Dami Im, Sheppard, Jael Wena, and Taysha Ferrugia, joining them for the finale before counting down to the fireworks in front of a crowd exceeding 10,000 people. Blake described the experience as “unforgettable." “Thank you to the organisers of Fast Track to Fame - this has truly been an incredible opportunity. Performing alongside such high-calibre artists and meeting Hugh Sheridan was an honour I’ll never forget,” said Hanks. Christine Collyer, Founder of Fast Track Talent, praised Blake’s performance at the Carols event. “Blake was an absolute star and embraced every moment of this opportunity. We’re thrilled to see the Burdekin Shire Council supporting such a fantastic platform for young artists,” she said. Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said Blake’s success demonstrates the impact of local initiatives like Fast Track. “It’s fantastic to see such a significant opportunity arise from a Burdekin event. The Fast Track Talent Showcase not only celebrates local talent but also opens doors for young people to shine on a national stage. Council is proud to support events like these, that create pathways for our youth to achieve their dreams.” Hosted by Burdekin Shire Council and the Burdekin Shire Youth Council, the NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase will return on the 20th to the 21st of March 2026.

97.1 Sweet FM, Rocking On

December 31, 2024

Sweet FM first began broadcasting back on 28th September, 1999. Charlie Scuderi, station manager, has been involved with the radio since its inception in 1999 and has been managing it for the last six years. Their studio is based in the old Home Hill Court House building, on Eighth Avenue, Home Hill.

“I was involved just after the formation of the radio station back in 1999, where I stayed for about 18 months. I then got invited back June in 2018 as there had been some issues at the radio station. Merle, who a lovely lady, had been running the radio but had some health issues, and unfortunately, she couldn't come back to the radio.”

“The radio was running in limbo as a result, so a meeting was called. We formed a new committee to keep Sweet FM going. I'm still here years later,” Charlie grins.

The radio station has become very high-tech during his tenure. One of Charlie’s major achievements is purchasing a van for the radio station, which is used frequently for outside broadcasts as it’s equipped with all the necessary gear for live recordings.

Presenters also no longer use CDs or turntables; instead, they stream music from USB sticks. The new, digital play-out program allows presenters to see the name of the artist and song on screen, eliminating the need for physical CDs.

“Prior to the current set-up we've got, presenters used to turn up with CDs and invariably, CDs present their own problems. You want to play track two on this CD, then track three on another CD, and track 12 on another CD. You always had to have the sleeve handy and go, ‘What's the name of the song I want, which track is it?’ So we changed to a computer based player program, where the presenters simply bring songs in on a USB. The tracks appear on screen and you just drag the songs into the order you want and instantly, you've got the name of the artist and the song. No surprises!”

The station is manned by a dedicated band of volunteers with each volunteer choosing the music they wish to play. Long-serving presenters include Brian Carnes (who’s been there since day one), Tony Goddard (20+ years), Chris Nissen (15+ years), and Carol Betteridge (10+ years).

The station operates under a narrowcast license and relies on advertising for revenue to stay afloat as it does not fall under the community station category. As a service to the community, however, the station can broadcast messages for other non-profit organisations and groups free of charge.

During cyclones and floods, they kept listeners up to date with the latest news as it came to hand. 97.1 Sweet FM, remains an important part of the Burdekin district's social and cultural life, broadcasting easy listening music, news, and varied mix of programmes, along with forums for discussing local and regional issues.

Sweet FM is always open to new presenters, especially as two current presenters may not return due to personal and health issues. They will have an open day on the 5th of April to celebrate 25 years on air, to attract new members and presenters.

“The 25th anniversary celebration will include an open house during the day, with market stalls on the lawn and tours of the radio station for people to see how a radio station operates. Former presenters, guests, and the public are all welcome to attend,” Charlie smiles.

If you’re interested in becoming a presenter for Sweet FM, contact Charlie on: (07) 4782-8394 or email: admin@sweetfm.com.au.

A Magical Christmas Eve Eve Celebration

December 31, 2024

A wave of festive cheer washed over the Burdekin Shire throughout the month of December, and as the eve of Christmas Eve rolled around, Jeffrey Lunn and Leon McCormack hosted another spectacular Christmas lights display for all to enjoy!

On both the 23rd and 24th of December, Santa Claus himself journeyed direct from the North Pole to greet plenty of families and pose for a few fantastic photos from sunset and into the night.

Santa Claus was advised of a few temporary changes of addresses ahead of the big day, noting that for some, Christmas will be spent at Nonna’s house instead this year. Christmas music filled the air across both evenings as Jeff and Leon prepared a selection of treats for attendees to enjoy, including popcorn, snow cones, and fairy floss, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Jeff and Leon’s award-winning light display continues to impress onlookers annually, leaving travelling families visiting loved ones for the festive season speechless.

A Festive Networking Night With Home Hill Chamber Of Commerce

December 18, 2024

The Home Hill Chamber of Commerce met for their final time this year, on Wednesday night, 11 December. The Chamber hosted guest speakers: Rachael Smith, the Editor-in-Chief of Core Publishing (and Burdekin Life); Burdekin Life’s new journalist, Mark T. Rasmussen; Home Hill State School principal, Sharon O’Neill and teacher, Louis Nicholas.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort, councillor, Amanda Hall, and several other prominent guests and members, were also in attendance.

Rachael Smith spoke about the benefits of having a local newspaper back in the community, and the knock-on effects it has provided. Mark Rasmussen introduced himself to the Chamber for the first time and gave his background, including being an award-winning author, having only arrived in the Home Hill area late November.

Sharon O’Neill, also a recent transplant, discussed her background and recent Australian travels, as well as her aims for Home Hill State High School. While colleague, Louise Nicholas talked about the exciting new horticultural project currently being undertaken at the school.

The night was a great success, with a special post talk Christmas light dinner provided, much to the delight of all attended.

Fortune Rocks The Burdekin A Rising Local Band Making Waves

December 20, 2024

Fortune, a homegrown four-piece band of talented musicians, continues to make waves and wow audiences from the Burdekin region and beyond.
With lead singer, Eliza Worlein, at the microphone, Patrick Hill on the bass guitar, Damian Torrisi on the drums, and Kai Meloni on the electric guitar, Fortune has grown from a routine jam session “what if?” to a booked and busy ensemble.
“We have been fortunate to play at some amazing venues and events and have had great opportunities in the last fourteen months,” shared Eliza.
“We have been so lucky to play at such great venues and received the support of so many people and performing in Ayr has been so great with the amazing support of the community for the three of us, Kai, Damian and myself, that have grown up in the Burdekin.”
Fortune has taken centre stage at numerous community events including Townsville City Council’s 2023 Christmas at the Beach, a Home Hill State High School fundraiser held earlier this year, and plenty of gigs at local hotels and bars.
A milestone achievement, the band made the decision to compete in the 2024 Fasttrack Talent Showcase where they not only advanced to the finals but met plenty of other wonderful bands who they now call friends.
A local sensation, Eliza, Patrick, Damian and Kai are thoroughly enjoying riding the musical wave, and favour popular tunes like Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U, Avril Lavine’s Sk8er Boi and Jets’ Are You Gonna Be My Girl to continue inviting audiences on their feet and dancing the night away.
“In 2025, we hope to have a few more gigs and some more regular appearances around town, and hopefully get our name out a bit more for some exposure,” added Eliza.
“We definitely would like to pursue some original songs and maybe record them if the opportunity arises as for us, the band is a way of expressing a love of music that the four of us have, so we hope to continue playing and explore whatever avenues come our way.”

Eliza Worlein, Patrick Hill, Kai Meloni and Damian Torrisi make up the brilliant Fortune band!

Christmas Tree Craft Library Fun

December 18, 2024

This week, and all into the holidays, The Burdekin Libraries at both Home Hill and Ayr, are running school holiday programs with some fun crafts. The children's librarian at the Burdekin Library, Carli Kovacich, discusses their school holiday programming, focusing on Christmas tree decoration crafts aimed at fostering family connections.

“Tuesday’s programming is called Christmas tree decorations where we provide craft materials and do clean-up. But what our programming is really about is connection with families. It's creating opportunities for families to connect with each other,” Carli enthuses.

The program provides all the craft materials and handles all the cleanup, aiming to create opportunities for families to engage with each other.

“What I'm trying to do there is create connection between kids who love to read. If you know of other kids out there in the world who get excited about books and about learning, then sign them up,” she says excitedly.

These programs, available for children five and above, can be booked via Eventbrite or The Burdekin Library's Facebook page. You can also call their phone number on: 4783-9970 for further information.

Upcoming events include the January school holiday programs, with details to be released on the 19th, while the Summer Reading Club ends on Thursday. Children can earn tickets for reading books, doing activities, or participating in summer holiday events. These tickets can then be exchanged for prizes, with the club also featuring a VR corner, gaming, and a dance area to foster a sense of community among its many avid, younger readers.

Big Crowd For Christmas Carols

The 2024 Christmas Carols, which took place at the beautiful Watson’s Green in Home Hill on December 8, drew a big crowd. Those who attended were eager to celebrate Christmas by singing carols along with the performers, while many dressed up in costumes or Christmas colours for the event.

The Burdekin Brass Band, who played on the lawn in front of the stage, kicked off the night before special guest and home grown talent, René Le Feuvre, starred in his performance, to the delight of his fans (and mum).

Others who got plenty of cheers of support included the ‘Let’s Groove’ Dance Troupe, who delighted the crowd with their fun moves; the Fast Track winning singers, Lauren, Riley and Eliza; along with the loved Island Remedies trio, Jo, Leeroy and Sadie, who gave a soulful demonstration of melodic old and songs.

With free entry, free face painting – a big winner on the night with the kids – plus a visit from Santa and fireworks, the large 500 plus audience in attendance, was treated to an exceptional night.

The Christmas Lights Guys Surprise Yet Again!

December 5, 2024

Jeff Lunn and Leon McCormack, are better knowns as the Christmas Lights Guys. They have been running a Christmas lights display for 17 years, something that was inspired by their childhood experiences.

“When I was growing up, mum and dad used to take us around to the houses and suburbs. I thought, ‘Yeah, I could give that a go all right.’ So, I did. I used to put lights up for my folks, and for my grandparents,” Jeff says.

“Leon was a bit of grinch the first few years, but now, now he's totally on board,” Jeff laughs.

A popular feature of their display, is the music that accompanies the many lights. They use a system called Light-O-Rama to synchronise the lights with the music, a practice they've maintained for 12 to 15 years. And just how many lights do they have?

“We have a four bay car garage that’s full of Christmas lights,” Leon says.

Despite the extensive setup, they have zero electricity bills due to 53 solar panels, which eliminate their worries about costs. And thank goodness, because in one year their display blew the main telegraph pole, leading to a total power outage in the area!

“In the early days we had simple gatherings with pizza and swims, but they’ve grown into the large-scale events you now see,” Jeff says.

The display attracts many local visitors, including those from Townsville, and is one of the most significant in the Burdekin area.

This year their display features new additions like an airplane and helicopter on the roof, along with other new features, including a flashing Merry Christmas sign. The Lions Club holds sausage sizzles, and Santa visits on Christmas Eve and the day before.

“We do this every year just for the pure enjoyment of seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces and the joy it brings people,” they both say.

Be sure to check out Jeff and Leon’s amazing Christmas lights display, located on the corner of Darwin and Edwards Streets, opposite the Ayr Golf course.
