A DREAM IN THE FAST LANE

A DREAM IN THE FAST LANE

The road to a career in motorsport has just begun for local enthusiast Jorja Ahern, who spent last week working the paddock as a scrutineer during the V8 Supercars' return to the Townsville 500. Photo supplied.‍It was while watching a Formula 1 film years ago that Burdekin local Jorja Ahern first fell in love with professional motorsport. But unlike many aspirants, it wasn't those donning helmets and racing suits in the cockpit that piqued her interest. It was the crewssteering the ship from the garage. An avid fan ever since, the teenager took her first steps into the paddock during last week’s Townsville 500 and, with them, a major stride towards her dream of working in the sport full-time. ‍LOCAL TEEN FAST-TRACKS MOTORSPORT DREAM AT TOWNSVILLE 500 ‍ The road to a career in motorsport has just begun for local enthusiast Jorja Ahern, who spent last week working the paddock as a scrutineer during the V8 Supercars' return to the Townsville 500. The Year 10 student worked alongside fellow scrutineers to ensure the high-octane Supercars met a list of racing regulations, dedicating a gruelling 48 hours across the four-day event from Thursday’s Porsche category to Sunday’s Supercar showdown. ‍ The voluntary role marked Jorja’s first time in a professional racing garage, an experience she said crystallised her long-standing dream of working as a professional motorsport engineer. “Just being there and being close to the cars, I was like, ‘how did I get here?’” she laughed. ‍ “You would walk through the paddock and then all these drivers would just come out of nowhere… Being in that environment, like that—I feel like that's my element.” ‍Jorja landed the role after reaching out to the Supercars team in search of opportunities to gain hands-on experience, eventually signing on as a scrutineer. ‍In the role, she was responsible for assessing tyre pressure, driver apparel, seat belts, and checking that fuel chains were ‘earthed’ to avoid potential fires, among other tasks. She also observed the races from the garage, monitoring pit stops and ensuringprocedures were undertaken smoothly.‍ The Year 10 student worked alongside fellow scrutineers to ensure the high-octane Supercars met a list of racing regulations, dedicating a gruelling 48 hours across the four-day event. Photo supplied. ‍The experience gave the teenager a rare opportunity to pick the brains of seasoned engineers and crew members across four long days of racing, each of which began as early as 5am. She said that, come the end of the week, her fascination for engineering and the finer details of racing had only grown. ‍“I had no idea they had to do all those different safety checks … and all the different regulations that had to be ticked off,” she said. ‍“It's also so interesting how the aerodynamics work, and how one little change in the aerodynamics can make such a big difference to the speed.” ‍According to her mother, Tracey Ahern, Jorja’s heart has long been in engineering, evidenced by her gravitation toward STEM-related school subjects as early as primary school. “Whenever there was an opportunity to become involved in STEM, she would put her hand up and say, ‘yeah, I want to get involved. I want to see what that's all about,’” Tracey said. ‍Jorja’s STEM interest continued into high school, where she became involved in the STEM Changemakers program—an initiative which aims to encourage female participation in scientific and technical industries. ‍Tracey described the Changemakers experience as a pivotal reassurance for Jorja that “girls can do anything.” ‍“[The Changemakers program] really opened up like the doors to understanding how diverse engineering is, and that although it has been a male-dominated industry … girls can do these things as well,” she said. ‍That notion was rubber-stamped for Jorja, who recalled seeing several women in the garages during race week in Townsville. Now armed with newfound confidence, the motorsport aspirant is eager to continue her surge into the world of professional motorsport engineering. ‍For Jorja, that involves studying mechanical engineering at university, before pursuing an engineering role at “any motorsport team—whether Supercars or F1.” ‍

AYR STATE SCHOOL STUDENTS EMBRACE NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

AYR STATE SCHOOL STUDENTS EMBRACE NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

The Ayr State School community joined the nation in celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture as NAIDOC Week arrived late last month. The celebrations, this year honouring five decades of NAIDOC, saw students and families gather at the school to recognise the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples. Attendees created Indigenous-inspired artworks and took part in hands-on damper making, before exploring one of the Gudjuda Rangers' research boats used to monitor and protect sea turtles. A kup murri lunch provided a unique taste of First Nations cuisine, with traditional dance performances and the singing of Taba Naba, a traditional song from the Torres Strait Islands, closing out the event. Ayr State School Head of Curriculum Nikky Guilfoyle said the event was an opportunity for students to “develop a greater appreciation of culture.” “Seeing our students proudly engage in NAIDOC celebrations is incredibly special,” she said. “Through storytelling, art, dance and shared experiences, [the students] develop a greater appreciation of culture, identity and community while learning the importance of respect and inclusion. “These experiences help build understanding, strengthen relationships and ensure every student recognises the significance of Australia's First Nations cultures as an essential part of our shared story.” The school extended a “heartfelt thank you” to everyone involved in bringing the event to fruition. CATFISH COMPETITION REELS IN $17,000 BOOST FOR MILLAROO STUDENTS

CATFISH COMPETITION REELS IN $17,000 BOOST FOR MILLAROO STUDENTS

The Millaroo State School P&C has raised more than $17,000 to support students after a successful return of its annual Catfish Competition last weekend. More than 50 competitors took part in the two-day fishing event, with the community gathering at the Millaroo Social Club on Saturday night for presentations, live entertainment and a fish-and-chip dinner prepared by the Millaroo P&C. The evening attracted more than 100 people in total, with auctioned items kindly donated by Don West Toyota & Burdekin laser cutting raising $1,075. Sponsorship contributions made up the rest of the fundraising total. This year’s competition saw anglers compete across categories including longest catfish, most catfish caught and longest other species, with junior divisions encouraging young fishers to get involved. Among the weekend’s winners were Millaroo State School students Leo and Layla Middleton, who claimed the titles for the longest catfish in their respective age categories, along with Harris Peterson and Remy Booth, among others. The event featured live music from Tiny & The Bad Teddy, raffles and a range of prizes, with free camping available for competitors wanting to make a weekend of the event. Organisers thanked the wider community via Facebook for helping make the fundraiser a success, highlighting the teamwork and support behind the event. “We’re a small community but when there’s work to be done, everyone pitches in,” shared Millaroo Social Club. “That’s what makes days like this possible and it’s all worth it to create memories for our kids and bring our community together. “Thank you again to everyone who supported the event. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!” CAPTIONS: 1—Winners of the adult men's and women's categories. 2—Winners Harris Peterson and Remy Booth. 3—QLD Rural sponsor Nick Malone auctioning off the items kindly donated by Don West Toyota & Burdekin laser cutting. World Premiere Announced for 2026 Outback Skies Festival

March 6, 2026

Flinders Shire Council has announced a major funding boost for the 2026 Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies, with the event set to host a world-premiere performance under the Queensland Government’s Queensland Arts Project Fund (QAPF).

Council has secured $43,485 from Arts Queensland to support a landmark Festival Finale, featuring the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra performing alongside internationally renowned didgeridoo virtuoso and composer William Barton.

Barton was commissioned by the Orchestra to compose a new work, due for completion later this month. Thanks to the QAPF funding, the piece will be performed publicly for the first time in Hughenden, marking a significant cultural milestone for the region.

Mayor Kate Peddle said the funding represented an exciting new chapter for both the Festival and the community.

“This funding through the Queensland Arts Project Fund allows us to deliver something truly extraordinary for our region,” Mayor Peddle said.

“To have the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra perform alongside William Barton, and to host the world premiere of a newly commissioned work right here in Hughenden, is an incredible honour.

“It places our Festival firmly on the cultural map and gives our community access to a world-class classical music experience under the Outback skies.”

Mayor Peddle said the announcement also built on the Festival’s history, noting that a string quartet from the Orchestra performed at the inaugural event.

The Festival Finale will be staged as a signature event of the 1–3 May 2026 program, complementing the Festival’s broader celebration of arts, culture and community.

Council is encouraging visitors to plan ahead, with accommodation already in strong demand and further announcements to come in the lead-up to the Festival.

Darren Coggan Brings Cat Stevens’ Classics to Home Hill

March 6, 2026

After dazzling the Burdekin with his Home for Christmas show last year, revered performer Darren Coggan is returning to the region this April with Remember the Days of Cat Stevens—a tribute to the timeless music and story of one of the world’s most beloved singer-songwriters.

Coggan, a Golden Guitar-winning country artist and TV presenter, has spent the last decade touring the world with the acclaimed Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story. He has performed at venues including Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Glasgow Concert Hall, and Liverpool Philharmonic, and in 2007 was even invited to meet Stevens himself.

“There are some personal reflections on the experience I had being invited to London to meet with the great Cat Stevens, where I heard first-hand some of the many anecdotes and stories that I have enjoyed sharing with our audiences over the past ten years,” Coggan says.

Stevens’ music continues to resonate across generations. Hits like Peace Train, Moonshadow, Wild World, and Father and Son remain as impactful today as when they were written. Coggan says performing these songs is both challenging and rewarding.

“The songs say something, ask questions, make statements—they have intelligent, poetic lyrics, and musically, while simplistic in presentation, they are very complex and always fun and challenging to perform,” he says.

“I do love this show and never tire of performing the songs. I love seeing the reaction from the audience each night and seeing them all stand up with an ovation—something I’ll never take for granted.”

Remember the Days of Cat Stevens goes beyond the hits, offering insight into the man behind the music and the lessons that can be derived from his wisdom.

“Perhaps the greatest thing I took home from my meeting with Cat Stevens was the realisation that we all have the ability to make changes in our lives, should we not be content with who we are or where we are,” he says.

“Every generation has the chance to change their world, and I pray that we have the courage to face up to the realities of our time and let ourselves feel deeply enough so that it transforms us and our children's future.”

For Burdekin audiences, the show promises more than nostalgia. It offers an evening of storytelling, reflection, and timeless music brought to life by one of Australia’s most versatile performers.

Remember the Days of Cat Stevens will be performed at the Burdekin Memorial Hall in Home Hill on Saturday, 24 April 2026 at 7:30pm. Tickets start from $40. Bookings are available via (07) 4783 9880 or www.burdekintheatre.com.au.

Burdekin Talent Returns Home for NQ Fast Track Showcase

March 5, 2026

Local artist René Le Feuvre is set to take the Burdekin stage once again, this time as a special guest at the 2026 NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase, where he will join ARIA Award–winner Conrad Sewell later this month for a weekend dedicated to celebrating emerging musical talent.

Fresh from touring internationally as a support act for Sewell, René is bringing his growing global experience back home for the showcase on Friday evening at the Burdekin Memorial Hall.

Born and raised in the Burdekin, the former Ayr State High School student has quickly built a reputation for high‑energy performances and has amassed more than two million streams, performing across Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America.

René will take part in the Friday evening workshop, serve as a guest judge for the Friday Night Heat, and deliver a live performance, sharing insights and inspiration with Fast Track participants.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort described René’s return as “incredibly special for the community,” highlighting his journey as a strong example of what local talent can achieve.

“Fast Track is all about nurturing and showcasing emerging talent, and René’s journey is a powerful example of where passion and dedication can lead,” she said.

The NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase continues to grow as one of the region’s premier platforms for emerging performers, offering professional development alongside live performance opportunities.

Last year’s winner, 17-year-old Blake Hanks from Airlie Beach, has already taken his first steps onto the national stage, performing at Sydney’s Double Bay Christmas Carols alongside Dami Im, Sheppard, and other major Australian acts in front of a crowd of over 10,000.

Tickets for this year's showcase are priced at $10 for access to all three heats across Friday and Saturday. The weekend will culminate with the Final Showcase, featuring a live performance from Conrad Sewell and Le Feuvre.

Home Hill Choral Society Prepares Irish-Themed March Show

February 26, 2026

Following consecutive sold-out shows to close out 2025, the Home Hill Choral Society has begun preparations for its first production of the year—an Irish-inspired show bringing together singing, acting, and local talent.

Hitting The Vault in late March, the show—titled ’All Things Irish’—is set to mark St. Patrick’s Day with a weekend of Irish-themed musical numbers, skits and humour.

Writer and producer of the show Erin Brennan says the show has something for everyone.

“The show is for anyone who just wants to have a good night out,” said Brennan.

“Irish music is very lifting for the spirit. We just want everyone to enjoy themselves, forget about their woes for a while and have a good old laugh.”

She said the script draws from an array of Irish influences—including her own roots.

“I’m always looking around, reading joke books, and trying to convert them into skits that suit the theme of our shows,” said Brennan.

“I have Irish heritage myself… I just know how fun they are, and the pub atmosphere over there.”

The group have been rehearsing for the show since early February—a quicker turnaround than usual, said Brennan.

“[The biggest hurdle] is working around people’s lifestyles,” she said.

“Hopefully we can get everyone to commit for the last lot of rehearsals.”

Performances are scheduled for 20, 21, 22, and 27 March, giving audiences several chances to catch the Home Hill Choral Society’s lively show. Tickets are available now, with organisers encouraging locals to secure their seats early for what promises to be a memorable night of music and entertainment.

For tickets or more information, contact Erin Brennan on 0428 822 091.

Registrations Now Open for the 2026 NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase

February 11, 2026

Burdekin Shire Youth Council, with the support of Burdekin Shire Council, is pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the 2026 NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase, returning to the Burdekin this March.

Performers of all ages and all talent genres are encouraged to register, with over $6,000 in cash and prizes on offer. The Showcase continues to provide a significant platform for emerging regional performers to demonstrate their skills in front of industry professionals.

This year’s event will be held at the Burdekin Memorial Hall on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March 2026. Due to ongoing renovations at the Burdekin Theatre, the Memorial Hall will host a more relaxed, table-seated format for the highly anticipated Finals Showcase, with food and beverages available for attendees.

A special guest performer and judge will be announced shortly.

Burdekin Shire is proud to host Queensland’s only Fast Track Talent Showcase, giving regional performers a rare opportunity to gain exposure in front of world-class talent management company Yoyo Music, alongside a panel of special guest judges.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the return of the event reflects Council’s continued commitment to supporting the arts and local performers.

“The Fast Track Talent Showcase has become one of our community’s most cherished family events, and we are excited to welcome it back in 2026,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“The showcase offers a unique opportunity unlike any other performance or stage experience in the Burdekin – whether you’re new to performing or seeking greater exposure, it truly caters to everyone.

“The program not only highlights the incredible talent within our region but also provides young performers with genuine pathways to pursue their aspirations.

“Council is proud to support an event that encourages creativity, builds confidence, and strengthens community spirit across the Burdekin.”

To register, simply text your name and contact information to 0411 757 337, or email bella@yoyomanagement.com.

Backstage Improvements Set to Begin at the Burdekin Theatre

February 5, 2026

Burdekin Shire Council is set to commence a landmark program of backstage improvements at the Burdekin Theatre, with works scheduled to begin in February 2026.

This upgrade represents a major milestone for our community, delivering the first renewal of the backstage areas since the theatre opened in 1982.

These original spaces have served countless school productions, dance festivals, local performance groups and visiting shows, and are now ready for their long‑awaited modernisation.

The project will deliver a full refurbishment of the theatre stage and a complete upgrade of the dressing rooms, transformations that will enhance comfort, functionality and accessibility for performers and production crews, while supporting the continued use of the venue by the community.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the works mark an exciting moment for the Burdekin and will ensure the Burdekin Theatre continues to support local performers and visiting productions into the future.

“The Burdekin Theatre plays a vital role in our community, particularly for young people who regularly take to the stage through school productions, dance festivals and local performance groups,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“These improvements are long overdue and will provide safer, more functional backstage facilities that better support the high level of talent we see in the Burdekin each year.”

Council is proud to support the region’s strong performing arts culture, including events such as the Burdekin Junior Eisteddfod, Verve Dance Festival, Fast Track Talent Showcase, local dance school concerts, and school musicals and performances.

Upgrade works will be carried out from February through to May 2026. During this period, the Burdekin Theatre will remain open; however, no performances will be held on the Auditorium stage while the works are underway.

The Burdekin Theatre Box Office will continue to operate as usual, opening Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm to assist patrons with ticket sales, enquiries and general information.
During the upgrade period, the following performances will be presented at Burdekin Memorial Hall:

• Morning Melodies: Bloom Sings Eva Cassidy – 18 February 2026
• Where is the Green Sheep? – 27 February 2026
• Morning Melodies: A Night in Vegas – 15 April 2026
• Remember the Days of Cat Stevens starring Darren Coggan – 24 April 2026
• Beatlemania on Tour – 29 April 2026

Council appreciates the community’s understanding while these important improvements are carried out and looks forward to welcoming audiences back to an enhanced Burdekin Theatre later in 2026.

Home Hill Choral Society 2025

January 21, 2026

A Year of Music and Community

The Home Hill Choral Society enjoyed a vibrant and successful 2025, strengthening its role as a key contributor to the region’s cultural life. The year was marked by a busy performance schedule, competition appearances, and community engagement that brought music to audiences across the Burdekin.

One of the highlights came in May, when the choir competed at the North Queensland Eisteddfod in Townsville. In the Small Choir category, the 14-member ensemble performed a varied selection including sacred works and lighter pieces, achieving strong recognition and showcasing the group’s versatility and dedication. The event underscored the choir’s commitment to excellence and its ability to represent Home Hill on a regional stage.

Throughout the year, the Society maintained a full calendar of performances, including regular shows and special community events. Theatre-restaurant productions remained popular, while lighter choral pieces and themed skits added variety to the program. The group also contributed to local cultural events, performing alongside visiting artists and participating in community celebrations that highlighted local talent and brought the joy of live music to diverse audiences.

The festive season offered a unique opportunity for the choir to engage with the wider public, performing Christmas carols in shopping centres and other public spaces. These performances emphasized the group’s focus on outreach, celebrating the holiday season while creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

As the Home Hill Choral Society looks ahead to 2026, plans are already underway for new productions and continued involvement in regional competitions and community events. The year concluded as a testament to the choir’s enduring presence in Home Hill, its dedication to music, and its commitment to bringing the community together through performance.
