Wheels In Motion - Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub

Wheels In Motion - Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub

Wheels In Motion Green Light for Anzac Park’s New State-of-the-Art Hub Work on the Burdekin’s new state-of-the-art pump track is racing toward the finish line, with construction at Anzac Park officially scheduled to break ground this April. The project, which was first announced in June 2025 as the “hero” of Burdekin Shire Council’s $2.8 million investment in regional parks, is nearing the end of its design phase following two rounds of community consultation. Situated within the former junior soccer field adjacent to the existing skate park, the facility is designed to cater to everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals across scooters, BMX bikes, skateboards, and mountain bikes. The project is backed by $760,000 from the Queensland Government’s 2024-27 Works for Queensland (W4Q) program. Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the final design was a direct reflection of local input. “The Anzac Park Pump Track is a great example of how community feedback helps Council deliver facilities that meet local needs and encourage people of all ages to be active,” Mayor Dalle Cort said. “Pump tracks are designed to be inclusive and accessible, catering for a range of users including bikes, scooters and skateboards. This facility will add to Anzac Park’s existing recreational offerings and provide a safe, purpose-built space for the entire community to enjoy.” The track forms a major part of a broader shire-wide recreational upgrade, providing a dedicated space for wheeled sports that complements the existing park infrastructure. Member for Burdekin Dale Last said the project highlighted the benefits of making the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture under the Crisafulli Government. “Our government has made the Works for Queensland program a permanent fixture that allows local government to put forward projects based on their consultation with local people and groups,” Mr Last said. “That means that we, as the state government, can deliver funding to support local jobs and local projects that make our communities better places to live.” Council confirmed that construction will commence in April, with further updates to be provided as the site transforms into a key recreational asset for the region.

North Queensland’s Dance Talent Takes Over the Burdekin

January 21, 2026

Verve Dance Festival returned to the Burdekin Theatre last weekend, showcasing North Queensland’s most promising dance talent over a five-day exhibition.

From 15–19 January, more than 1,000 dancers from Mackay to Cairns travelled to the Burdekin to compete across a range of sections, with festival founder Machelle Slatcher describing it as one of the most fiercely contested events to date.

“Up here in North Queensland, the talent is off the charts,” she said.

“I just wanted to run a competition that was relaxed and give the kids another opportunity to do what they love most, which is getting up on stage and performing.”

Competitors, aged between 12 and 20, battled it out for a place on the podium, with winners earning automatic entry into the Showcase National Finals on the Gold Coast later this year.

Beyond highlighting regional talent, Slatcher, a Burdekin resident of 35 years, said a key aim of Verve is to inject money into the local economy.

“One of my goals is to bring money to the town in January, because after Christmas, business is quiet,” she said.

“It’s about helping local businesses out, and from what I’ve heard, it certainly has this year.”

Slatcher said she was pleased with how the 2025 event unfolded as a whole.

“The vibes were good, and I had so many people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoyed Verve this year,” she said.

“I’d like to thank our sponsors and the Burdekin Theatre staff, because without them, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Full festival results are available on the Verve Dance Festival Facebook page.

Holiday Fun Isn’t Over Yet

January 15, 2026

How to Make the Most of the Final Week of School Holidays

Students across the Burdekin Shire are set to enjoy one final week of school holiday freedom and fun before classes resume on Tuesday, the 27th of January! Although the past month’s wet weather may have put a dampen on some school holiday plans, there’s still plenty to get up to in and around the region, rain, hail or shine.

Library Fun That Never Gets Old
Kicking things off strong, the region’s local libraries are absolute holiday heroes once again. Every school holidays, children can pick up Wink (for younger kids) or Blink (for older school-aged kids) - two free activity booklets packed with puzzles, games and creative challenges to enjoy at home. They’re available from the first weekend of the holidays at both Burdekin Library Ayr and the Home Hill Branch Library.

On top of that, the Burdekin Library has rolled out a jam-packed program of FREE school holiday activities for children aged four and up.

• Thursday the 15th of January: 10am Laser Cut Bag Tag Workshop at the Ayr Library.
• Monday the 19th of January: 2pm Movie Time at the Ayr Library.
• Tuesday the 20th of January: 10am Beaded Jewellery Workshop and 3pm Circuit Lunchbox Name Sticker Workshop, both at the Ayr Library.

Outdoor Adventures for All Ages
If the sun’s out, then there’s no excuse why you and your families shouldn’t pop on out to enjoy the great outdoors these summer holidays!

Plantation Park is always a crowd favourite, offering shady picnic spots, BBQ facilities, access to the Juru Walk and the impressive Plantation Nature Play area with all-abilities swings, climbing features and fossil digging. Keep an eye out for the iconic 60-metre carpet snake sculpture, Gubulla Munda!

Coutts Park in Ayr and Arch Dunn Memorial Park in Home Hill are ideal for relaxed afternoons, with playgrounds, picnic shelters, barbecues and plenty of space to run free. Over at Alva Beach Park, the recently upgraded playground adds a musical twist with instrument-inspired installations alongside slides, swings and a half basketball court.

For something a little different, take the family on a creative wander along the Burdekin Art Trail. Stretching across five towns, the trail showcases vibrant murals, sculptures and installations that bring the region’s culture and history to life, perfect for a relaxed couple of hours exploring together.

Nature, Wildlife and Hidden Gems
Looking to mix fun with a bit of learning? The Ayr Nature Display is a must-visit. Home to one of Australia’s finest preserved collections of butterflies, beetles, shells, fossils and more, it’s a fascinating experience for curious kids (and adults too).

Bird lovers will adore a trip to Horseshoe Lagoon Conservation Park, around 30 minutes north of Ayr. With a permanent freshwater lagoon, abundant birdlife and a sheltered bird hide, it’s a peaceful way to reconnect with nature and spot something new.

Get Moving Together
Why not turn the holidays into a fun family challenge? Plantation parkrun runs every Saturday at 7am and is completely free. Walk, jog, run, volunteer or cheer from the sidelines - it’s all about participation.

For a school holiday adventure with a serious “wow” factor, Mt Inkerman is a must-visit. Just a 10-minute drive south of Home Hill, this iconic landmark rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape and offers breathtaking panoramic views across the region.

Make This Summer One to Remember
With calendars filling fast for 2026, these school holidays are the perfect chance to slow down, reconnect and enjoy everything the community has to offer. From library programs and shady park picnics to art trails, wildlife and beachside play, there’s something for every family and plenty of opportunities to make memories that last long after the school bell rings again!

Lighting Up The Burdekin

Jeff and Leon’s Christmas Tradition

By Chelsea Ravizza

Christmas cheer has blossomed in the Burdekin once again, and the beloved Christmas Lights Guys have continued to wow and delight the region, keeping one of the community’s most treasured traditions alive for almost two decades.

Jeff Lunn and Leon McCormack first began decorating their Home Hill home in 2007, but it wasn’t until they moved across the bridge and unveiled their display in Ayr that things truly took off.

“It started to pick up in about 2010 after we moved, and it has just gotten bigger, and bigger, and bigger every year as we add extra display pieces to keep things fresh, different and exciting,” Jeff explained.

Childhood memories are what initially inspired the pair to ignite what has become such a beautiful local tradition, however, it’s the joy Jeff and Leon see across the faces of everyone who stops by that keeps the pair excited.

“Seeing the children, families and the community enjoying themselves and having a good time continues to excite us and that’s all it’s really about and we love having people come around to see the lights,” enthused Jeff.

“Growing up in Newcastle, we would do Christmas light drives as a family with mum and dad, and our inspiration to put on these displays has just drawn on from that and from the enjoyment we see from the kids when they come around, and what the whole community gets out of what we do.”

What once began as a humble light display, has evolved into a community-oriented festive extravaganza, complete with a radio channel featuring perfectly synchronised tunes to accompany the magic of the dancing lights. Annually, hundreds of visitors flock to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to experience the magical display, while for six months of the year Jeff and Leon work behind the scenes, preparing to outdo the previous year’s spectacle.

“Our enjoyment also comes from keeping busy,” added Jeff.

“The displays certainly keep us on our toes, and that’s how we like it, we love to keep busy.”

In July, the cogs start turning as Jeff and Leon sit down to plan what will stay, what will go, and what will make its debut this festive season, placing orders left, right and centre to ensure everything will arrive in time for the end of year extravaganza.

Sunlight streams into Jeff and Leon’s four bay car garage in mid to late August, as the pair roll up the doors and their sleeves to test each and every bulb across thousands of lights in preparation for large-scale display.

As late September ticks around, the pair are in full spooky season mode, putting together a wonderfully witching Halloween display, complete with a classic trick or treat dress up party to round out the month of October.

With that holiday behind them, Jeff and Leon pack away the frights, and unpack the festive delights, working as hard as a North Pole elf on Christmas Eve to have the house looking ship shape from the 1st of November.

On the 23rd of December and of course, Christmas Eve, Santa himself will make an appearance, perched up in his bright red sleigh, ready for family photos from about 7pm onwards. The grill will be up and running, serving up a delicious sausage sizzle, and complimentary popcorn, fairy floss and snow cones will also be on offer to add to the festivities.

Jeff and Leon cannot wait to delight the community for the 18th year with their wonderful display, and hope to see plenty of families pop on over to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to catch a glimpse of the magic this festive season.

Fast Track To Fame Winner Takes Sydney By Storm

December 17, 2025

Blake Hanks, winner of this year’s NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase in Ayr, has taken his first steps onto the national stage after performing at Sydney’s Double Bay Christmas Carols on the 23rd of November alongside some of Australia’s biggest names.

The 17-year-old Airlie Beach performer, who boasts a strong track record in school musicals, eisteddfods, and talent competitions, was awarded the prestigious Fast Track award in March for his impressive vocal talent. His victory earned him an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney, including a mentoring session with acclaimed performer Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters, California Crooners Club), and the opportunity to showcase his talents to the nation.

Blake opened the Double Bay Christmas Carols with festive favourites Holly Jolly Christmas and Winter Wonderland, later performing Last Christmas. He shared the stage with Dami Im, Sheppard, Jael Wena, and Taysha Ferrugia, joining them for the finale before counting down to the fireworks in front of a crowd exceeding 10,000 people.

Blake described the experience as “unforgettable."

“Thank you to the organisers of Fast Track to Fame - this has truly been an incredible opportunity. Performing alongside such high-calibre artists and meeting Hugh Sheridan was an honour I’ll never forget,” said Hanks.

Christine Collyer, Founder of Fast Track Talent, praised Blake’s performance at the Carols event.

“Blake was an absolute star and embraced every moment of this opportunity. We’re thrilled to see the Burdekin Shire Council supporting such a fantastic platform for young artists,” she said.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said Blake’s success demonstrates the impact of local initiatives like Fast Track.

“It’s fantastic to see such a significant opportunity arise from a Burdekin event. The Fast Track Talent Showcase not only celebrates local talent but also opens doors for young people to shine on a national stage. Council is proud to support events like these, that create pathways for our youth to achieve their dreams.”

Hosted by Burdekin Shire Council and the Burdekin Shire Youth Council, the NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase will return on the 20th to the 21st of March 2026.

In August, Greg Andrew channels Sir Elton John with his uncanny presence and music mastery, paying tribute to the legendary partnership of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

What’s New Pussycat, the brainchild of Australia’s favourite cabaret duo Melissa Langton and Mark Jones, then graces the theatre, swinging into September with hits from the sixties, including renditions of Tom Jones, Burt Bacharach, and The Fab Four.

The season is rounded off in spectacular fashion on 2 December with the Best of Bublé Christmas Experience at Burdekin Memorial Hall, led by Welsh-born frontman Rhydian Lewis and his band The Residuals. Home Hill Falls Just Short in JCU Thriller

December 2, 2025

In a nail-biting Third Grade clash at JCU Cricket Oval, Home Hill fell agonisingly short of victory, losing to Saints PPS by just 2 runs in a match that went down to the wire. Despite a spirited bowling effort and flashes of brilliance with the bat, Home Hill were edged out 9/151 to Saints’ 7/153.

The top order struggled to settle in scorching conditions, with early dismissals stalling momentum. Andrew Wallwork anchored Home Hill’s innings with an unbeaten 51 off 40 balls, striking six boundaries. Extras proved a lifeline, contributing a hefty 35 runs to Home Hill’s total of 9/151.

Home Hill’s bowlers gave their all in defending the total. Jay Leckenby led the attack with 2 wickets for just 20 runs off 6 overs, including a maiden. Leo Olditch was equally effective, claiming 2/26 from his spell. Ryan Rickards and Travis Butler chipped in with a wicket apiece. Michael Richards (wk) was sharp behind the stumps, taking two catches and executing a stumping. However, it wasn’t enough, with Saints chasing down the total in the final over.

No Second Grade result today – Home Hill was unable to take the field against Norths, as the wet Endeavour field was deemed unplayable.
