Get ready to “Twist & Shout” as Beatlemania On Tour brings its internationally acclaimed production to the Burdekin Memorial Hall in Home Hill on Wednesday 29 April 2026 at 7.30pm, for one night only. Since its launch in 2009, the Australian-based show has built a formidable global reputation, selling out performances across North America, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, Asia and New Zealand. After a decade away from Australia’s east coast, the production is now returning with a high-energy tribute to the music that defined a generation. Audiences can expect a two-hour audio-visual spectacular featuring more than 40 of the greatest hits by The Beatles, performed live in their original keys with meticulous attention to detail. Replica costumes, period instruments and theatrical lighting combine to recreate the look and sound of the 1960s, capturing the spirit of the world’s most influential band. The setlist reads like a greatest-hits time capsule, including classics such as Hey Jude, All You Need Is Love, Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, Twist & Shout, Yesterday, Come Together, Get Back, Help!, Eleanor Rigby and Here Comes the Sun, among many others. Behind the production is a cast of seasoned musicians, including Zachary Coombs, who performs the role of John Lennon. Coombs’ connection to the music runs deeper than most. Named after Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr, he grew up in a musical household influenced by jazz, rock and 90s pop. He first picked up the guitar as a teenager before discovering The Beatles at 15 after receiving their 1 compilation album. “I fell in love with every single song,” Coombs recalled, describing the moment as a turning point that led him to explore the band’s entire catalogue. After years touring internationally as a solo cruise ship performer, Coombs joined Beatlemania in 2014, later stepping into the role of John Lennon. He has also performed as Paul McCartney and George Harrison in earlier productions, drawing on what he describes as “the magic within the music itself.” He says the key to portraying Lennon lies in understanding the balance of musicianship and attitude. “If the musicians are having fun on stage, it becomes infectious,” Coombes said. The show also features fellow performers portraying Ringo Starr and the rest of the iconic line-up, with attention to every musical and visual detail. For Coombs and the cast, the appeal of Beatles music lies in its universality, with songs built on themes of love, peace and connection that continue to resonate across generations. “This is more than a concert,” organisers say. “It’s a celebration of music history.” Tickets are available now at burdekintheatre.com.au. Alaya Mugica (15) — NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase ‘Fast Track to Fame’ Award Winner Alaya Mugica had her sights set on her finals song, ‘I Will Survive’ by Donna Summer, two months in advance of the NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase, a choice based upon her “authentic, personal connection with the song.” “This song was one I would play every morning, even during a really low time in my life, as it was always able to brighten my spirit for the day,” she said. After meticulous preparation in the lead-up to the event, she took to the stage with the simple goal of “delivering the same amount of energy to the audience the song always delivered to me.” That she did, in turn earning her the coveted ‘Fast Track to Fame’ award. For Alaya, the award is a culmination of an ardent passion for music nurtured since childhood, and six years of development under Amaia Blakey (nee Licciardello) and Perform Music Studios. “Music was always something that felt so natural to me and has always been something I’ve loved and forever will,” she said. Alaya’s repertoire spans multiple instruments and genres, largely favouring what she enjoys listening to. “When performing, I feel I gravitate towards indie-pop and pop-rock. I do sometimes like to incorporate Spanish and French songs and verses as well,” she said. “I have forever been most comfortable with a guitar. Although it was suggested to have piano as my more ‘dominant’ instrument, I could not deal with the thought of leaving my guitar.” Music shifted from a mere dream to a real possibility when, following a musical theatre workshop in Townsville last year, Alaya was invited by international tenor Paul Tabone to begin one-on-one Classical Melocchi vocal coaching at The Artists Lab. The program provides training in singing, acting and dancing for aspiring performers aiming for the international stage. Looking ahead, Alaya hopes to continue to develop her song-writing and technique under the tutelage of The Artists Lab. “This opportunity has truly been an incredible journey for me so far,” she said. “I hope with more experience and song writing, this will allow me to understand and foster the kind of artist I am and where to go from there."

Milla Licciardello (16) — NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase Runner-Up It was just six days before the NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase that Milla Licciardello decided to throw her hat in the ring. By week’s end, she walked out of the Burdekin Memorial Hall as runner-up, impressing judges with a rendition of “I Hate Boston” by Reneé Rapp and a soulful performance of “Gone” by Lianne La Havas. Milla says her true affinity for music cemented itself just recently. The teenager has been performing for the past 10 years, taking part in the Perform Studios annual concert each year. But it wasn’t until she was 14 that she says she “really started to appreciate the art of it.” “I started singing while playing piano and then started learning guitar in my music class at school,” Milla said. “I really enjoyed learning a new instrument and borrowed one of the guitars from school and took it home. Eventually, I ended up getting a guitar for my birthday two years ago and ever since have really aspired to grow my skills every day.” Since then, Milla has balanced teaching instruments to younger children with developing her own sound, which she describes as “all over the place.” “When wanting to play or sing an upbeat, chill song, I typically reach for my guitar. However, when I want to feel more emotional I go to the piano and my voice becomes more powerful. “I can go from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Chris Stapleton to Taylor Swift. I don’t necessarily gravitate towards a genre, just anything that sounds good!” She calls her mother and sisters her biggest musical influences, while crediting the Burdekin community with helping her find her wings in music. “When I was younger I could not even fathom standing on a stage actually singing. However, with the constant support of the Burdekin and music around me, it eventually clicked.” Over the next few years, Milla hopes to begin producing her own music. She also hopes to continue to impart her musical knowledge and passion onto her students. "I love teaching these instruments to younger children, and can hopefully pass my love onto them as well.”

In a nail-biting Third Grade clash at JCU Cricket Oval, Home Hill fell agonisingly short of victory, losing to Saints PPS by just 2 runs in a match that went down to the wire. Despite a spirited bowling effort and flashes of brilliance with the bat, Home Hill were edged out 9/151 to Saints’ 7/153.
The top order struggled to settle in scorching conditions, with early dismissals stalling momentum. Andrew Wallwork anchored Home Hill’s innings with an unbeaten 51 off 40 balls, striking six boundaries. Extras proved a lifeline, contributing a hefty 35 runs to Home Hill’s total of 9/151.
Home Hill’s bowlers gave their all in defending the total. Jay Leckenby led the attack with 2 wickets for just 20 runs off 6 overs, including a maiden. Leo Olditch was equally effective, claiming 2/26 from his spell. Ryan Rickards and Travis Butler chipped in with a wicket apiece. Michael Richards (wk) was sharp behind the stumps, taking two catches and executing a stumping. However, it wasn’t enough, with Saints chasing down the total in the final over.
No Second Grade result today – Home Hill was unable to take the field against Norths, as the wet Endeavour field was deemed unplayable.

It was a Harvest Festival Gala Ball to remember last Friday, 7 November, as hundreds of Burdekinites wined, dined, and witnessed the crowning of Aaliyah Gibson and Eden Betteridge as the Harvest Festival Queen and the Personality Queen respectively.
Representing the Burdekin Netball Association, Gibson was quick to thank the committee and her peers for the experience and support.
"We wouldn't be here without the hard work and dedication of the Harvest Festival and Rotary committees," she said. "And thank you to all the [queens]. I've had so much fun getting to know you all and to try new things with you. It's been a lot of fun."
The crowning of the queens comes after weeks of interviews, both group and individual, conducted by a three-person judging panel. The group were also expected to attend a range of Harvest Festival events along the way, including their own fundraisers, which helped raise over $50,000 in total.
President of the Home Hill Harvest Festival Mark Vass said it's an experience that will long live in the memory of the queens.
"Many [past queens] still remember their time as an entrant, the friends they made and how it encouraged them to step outside their comfort zone and become more involved in the community," he said. "Down the track, you will really feel that you've grown from the experience."

Seniors from across the Burdekin region gathered at the Burdekin Memorial Hall on Thursday, 30 October for the annual Seniors Expo and Luncheon, hosted by Burdekin Shire Council. The event provided a day of connection, support, and entertainment while celebrating the vital role seniors play in the community.
The Expo featured a wide range of stalls from local organisations and businesses, giving attendees the chance to explore available resources and services. Notable participants included Regis Aged Care, Ayr Health Service, Burdekin Neighbourhood Centre, Burdekin Community Association, Bendigo Bank (Ayr & Home Hill), Nutrien Harcourts McCathies, and McCathie’s Furniture Plus. Seniors were able to access information on health, finance, and wellbeing, as well as make connections with groups and services across the region.
Adding a festive touch to the day, guests enjoyed a roast lunch with dessert and were entertained by Emcee Ricky Romeo, creating a lively and social atmosphere for all.
Council thanked Regis Aged Care for their support as the event’s Major Sponsor, noting their contribution was key to making the Seniors Expo and Luncheon possible.
The event was well-attended, vibrant, and proved to be both informative and enjoyable, reinforcing its place as a much-loved annual gathering for the Burdekin’s senior community.

It’s that time of year. The Home Hill Harvest Festival is set to once again culminate in its trademark Grand Parade and Street Party on Saturday, 8 November 2025, and this year’s theme, Hollywood Elegance, promises a day of community fun with a hint of glamour.
The Grand Parade, starting at 5 PM along Main Street, will feature local schools, businesses, sporting clubs, and festival queens, with 30–40 floats expected. Festival Secretary Carlene Muilwyk said the theme is all about getting the community involved.
“We just tried to find a theme that's really fun for the community… It gives everyone in the Grand Parade a chance to have some fun with it,” she said.
The Street Party opens at 3pm at Watson’s Green and Memorial Park, giving families with young children a chance to enjoy rides, a petting zoo, and food stalls before the main festivities kick off at 6pm. This year’s Street Party features classic favourite rides alongside some tasty new food options.
Live music will hum across the town throughout the afternoon and evening, with the Thuringowa Brass Band from Townsville leading the parade before performing on stage, and local favourite Luke Geiger closing the evening. Drinks are available from Tipsy Tap, and local services including the fire brigade, ambulance, and PCYC will be on site.
For Carlene and the Home Hill Harvest Festival Committee, the events are about connecting the community.
“Community is really what it’s all about for us,” Carlene said. “I love walking at the end of the parade and seeing all the people. The excitement on the kids' faces… it’s seeing that happiness and energy that makes it special.”
She hopes visitors leave with a sense of fun and family togetherness.
“I just want people to have fun… This is really for families. I hope people come, bring their families, and enjoy everything we have going on for them.”
With community spirit and a touch of Hollywood flair, this year’s Home Hill Harvest Festival is shaping up to be another event to remember.

The Burdekin Shire is in for a treat this Friday, the 31st of October, as multiple Golden Guitar winner Tom Curtain brings his nationally acclaimed Katherine Outback Experience to the Ayr Showgrounds.
Known not only for his talents as a musician and horseman, Tom Curtain uses his shows to champion important causes, including anti-bullying initiatives through Dolly’s Dream. As an official ambassador for the foundation, Tom spreads awareness about the impacts of bullying and encourages communities to support young people facing these challenges.
The family-friendly event combines thrilling outback demonstrations with live music. The Katherine Outback Experience features one hour of real horse training and working dog demonstrations, with plenty of hands-on activities for children. Following this, attendees will enjoy two hours of live music performed by Tom Curtain alongside fellow musicians Laura Frank, Chris Matthews, and Melanie Gray.
Curtain’s Outback Show has earned gold at the National Tourism Awards in 2021, 2023, and 2024, and is celebrated for bringing entertainment to regional communities often overlooked on the national tour circuit.
Gates are set to open at 5pm for a 5:30pm show time start with tickets available for purchase at the door. Food and drinks will be available, and guests are encouraged to bring chairs and picnic blankets for a comfortable evening under the stars.

There’s something special about a community that comes together — not just to celebrate, but to support one another through every stage of life. Our team is proud to be part of such a caring and connected community, where fun and compassion go hand in hand.
This Halloween, our office is embracing the spirit of Halloween with our Best Dressed Halloween Competition! We can’t wait to see the creativity, laughter, and spooky costumes that make our community events so memorable each year. It’s all about coming together, having fun, and celebrating the people who make our region so unique.
Our office loves bringing people together through friendly competition and festive fun. Throughout the year, we enjoy organising community competitions for occasions like Easter and Christmas, spreading joy and creating opportunities for everyone to connect and celebrate. These events have become something we all look forward to — a reminder of the strong community spirit that makes the Burdekin such a wonderful place to live.
Beyond the costumes and celebrations, our community involvement extends to more meaningful moments as well. We’ll be attending the upcoming Seniors Expo this Thursday, where we’ll be chatting with locals about downsizing or selling/renting their homes — a topic close to many hearts.
We understand that selling a long-time family home can be an emotional and deeply personal experience. Homes hold precious memories — the laughter of family gatherings, the milestones marked within their walls — and deciding to move on is never easy. Our role is not just to sell property, but to provide care, patience, and understanding throughout the entire process. We take the time to ensure each client feels supported and confident as they take this important step in their life’s journey.
Whether it’s celebrating community fun at Halloween, organising festive competitions, or offering guidance through life’s big transitions, we’re here — not just as real estate professionals, but as members of the community who truly care.

The author of more than 30 books, Kim Wilkins is returning to the Burdekin for two special one-off events, hosted by the Burdekin Readers & Writers Association.
Burdekinite’s have a rare chance to attend a meet & greet with Kim, who has been published in more than 20 languages and won numerous accolades, to hear how she’s done it at a newly established pop-up bar at 148 Queen St, along with attending her writing workshop.
“We feel very fortunate and honoured that Kim accepted our invite to come to the Bur-dekin,” says Mark T. Rasmussen, (VP of the Burdekin Readers & Writers Associa-tion).
“Kim is a recognised expert on storytelling, popular literature, and the publishing in-dustry, which will not only benefit the many creatives we are lucky to have here in the community, but generate much wider interest by those fascinated by Kim’s stories and success.”
With her latest historical fiction novel, The Secret Year of Zara Holt (written under the pseudonym of Kimberley Freeman) now a bestseller, the anticipation in the commu-nity is building.
The Secret Year of Zara Holt covers the life of Zara, from the night she met former Prime Minister Harold Holt at a college dance in Melbourne in 1927, until his fateful swim 40 years later off Cheviot beach in Portsea.
With a first class honours degree in literature, an MA, and PhD, Kim, who is currently Professor of Writing at the University of Queensland, comes with serious credentials.
“When the idea was first floated to host Kim, we immediately jumped on it. Since then, she’s been amazing, giving us a large chunk of her time with these two one-off events here in the Burdekin,” says Mark.
“We’re hopeful that a budding author finds inspiration from Kim Wilkins and goes on to write a future award winning novel,” he adds.
Tickets to ‘Cocktails & Conversations’ (Friday Oct 31) or Kim’s ‘Structure & Style: Telling Compelling and Beautiful Stories’ Writing Workshop (Saturday Nov 1, 10am-3pm) can be purchased online at: www.burdekinraw.org.au/events or in person from Home Hill News & Coffee or Dominque’s boutique in Ayr.
