BURDEKIN INNOVATION CELEBRATED AT STATE AWARDS

BURDEKIN INNOVATION CELEBRATED AT STATE AWARDS

The Burdekin Shire Council has been formally lauded as one of Queensland’s leading innovators at the 2026 LGMA Awards for its world-first macroalgal facility. The LGMA Awards for Excellence recognise outstanding achievement across statewide local government, with the Burdekin Macroalgal Facility, officially opened last year, acknowledged for its approach to sustainable infrastructure. Mayor Dalle Cort said the award reinforced the Burdekin as a regional trailblazer. “This recognition… demonstrates what can be achieved when we are willing to think differently,” Mayor Dalle Cort said. “By taking a different approach, we’ve been able to improve environmental performance while also delivering long-term value for our ratepayers.” Delivered in partnership with RegenAqua and Pacific Biotechnologies, the facility uses naturally occurring macroalgae to remove nutrients from wastewater, significantly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus entering waterways connected to the Great Barrier Reef catchment. The system also produces macroalgal biomass that can be reused in agriculture and industry. The LGMA recognition follows success at last year’s Queensland Water Awards, where the project took out the regional Infrastructure Project Innovation Award in October.

As Runner-Up in the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival Junior Ambassador Program, Jorja Vasta is encouraging other young people to get involved as preparations begin for the 68th Burdekin Water Festival, themed River Country, Burdekin Style. Jorja said she was thrilled to receive her title and looks back on her time in the program fondly. “I was stoked to be crowned the 2025 Burdekin Water Festival Junior Ambassador Runner Up. I couldn't believe it,” she said. “I enjoyed the different experiences that came with being involved in the Water Festival, and my confidence definitely got a boost. I met a lot of new people, and I became socially more confident, which helped me a bit when I began my journey at high school.” Jorja proudly represented the Burdekin Junior Rugby League Club, an organisation with strong ties to her family. “I have loved the Burdekin Water Festival and its vibe of community connection, and it was great to represent the club I play for, and my family has been a part of,” she said. Reflecting on Jorja's time in the Water Festival Ambassador Program, she and her mother, Samantha Vasta, said the experience helped build confidence, create new friendships and leave lasting memories, and they are excited to see this year's entrants begin their own festival journey. “It was heartwarming to watch new friendships develop and Jorja’s confidence grow, and everyone around her [fellow ambassadors and mentors] were so supportive and encouraging,” Samantha said. “Just know you won’t be the only one feeling nervous and just give it a go,” Jorja enthused. Community To Gather Under The Stars To Kick Off The 68th Burdekin Water Festival

Community To Gather Under The Stars To Kick Off The 68th Burdekin Water Festival

It's almost lights, camera, action for the 2026 Burdekin Water Festival, with excitement building across the region as preparations ramp up for the official BWF Community Launch. The Burdekin Water Festival Committee is warmly inviting the community to gather under the stars at the Burdekin Theatre Forecourt from 6pm on Friday, 19th June, to celebrate the launch of the 68th Burdekin Water Festival and the beginning of another exciting festival season. Burdekin Water Festival Ambassador Coordinator Kari Ravizza said the Community Launch remains one of the most significant events on the festival calendar, bringing together sponsors, supporters, families and festival enthusiasts ahead of months of celebrations. “The Launch is where the community gets its first chance to meet this year's Ambassadors and celebrate the beginning of their journey,” she explained. “It sets the tone for the months ahead and reminds us what the Water Festival is all about – community, connection and local pride.” Held under the 2026 theme, River Country, Burdekin Style, the evening will celebrate the spirit, character and lifestyle that make the Burdekin unique. “River Country, Burdekin Style is about celebrating everything that makes the Burdekin special – our people, our lifestyle and our strong sense of community,” Mrs Ravizza said. Guests will be among the first to meet this year's Festival Ambassadors, who will take to the stage to deliver their introductory speeches and begin their Water Festival journey. “People can look forward to a fantastic evening of local talent, community spirit and festival excitement,” Mrs Ravizza enthused. “Meeting this year's Ambassador team for the first time will undoubtedly be a highlight, and it's a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and show their support.” Adding a touch of nostalgia to the evening, the much-loved Festival Fashion Parade will return, reviving a tradition from years gone by while showcasing garments from local businesses. Live entertainment from local performers Gabriel Hatheral and Mason Lando will also feature throughout the night. Mrs Ravizza belives the launch is the perfect introduction to the Water Festival for both long-time supporters and first-time attendees. “Even if you've never attended a Water Festival event before, the Launch is the perfect place to start,” she said. “It's a relaxed and welcoming evening where you can enjoy local entertainment, meet this year's Ambassadors and experience the community spirit that makes the festival so special. The Water Festival belongs to the whole Burdekin, and the Launch is a great way to be part of it.” As the countdown to the festival season begins, Mrs Ravizza said she’s beyond excited to see the community come together and celebrate everything that makes the Burdekin unique, and cannot wait to see the 2026 BWF Ambassador Program flourish for another year. “I'm most excited to see our Ambassadors build confidence, develop new skills and form lasting friendships. It's always incredible to watch them step outside their comfort zones and discover what they're capable of,” she said. “This year, we're also doing something a little different with our Junior Ambassadors. Instead of hosting individual fundraising events, they'll be working together to create one major community event, which I'm really looking forward to seeing come to life. I think it will be a fantastic experience for them and something the whole community can enjoy.” Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic rug or chair and settle in for an evening of entertainment, community spirit and festival fun. Attendees can bring their own picnic or pre-order meals from Feed Me Food via the Burdekin Water Festival website and social media pages. Meal options will cater to a range of dietary requirements, including gluten-free, with pre-orders encouraged as only limited meals will be available for purchase on the night. Drinks will be available from the bar. Tickets for the BWF Community Launch are available now via burdekinwaterfestival.com.au/events. Bringing Back The Water Festival Mardi Gras

August 29, 2024

After Covid disruptions and a hiatus last year, the Burdekin Water Festival Grand Parade and Mardi Gras is finally making its much-anticipated return, bringing with it an evening of excitement, community spirit, and vibrant celebrations. As the weekend approaches, the local community is eagerly preparing to revive this beloved tradition.

This year’s event is particularly special as it marks the return back to Queen Street where it first began in 1958.  The 2024 theme of “Bring It Back” is not only bringing back the traditions of the past, they are hoping the Burdekin community will also bring back the support and attend in high numbers. The Grand Parade set to start at 4:30pm, promises to be the highlight of the night, with a colourful array of floats showcasing the creativity and enthusiasm of Junior and Senior Ambassadors and their supporting organisations, local groups and businesses. At the conclusion of the parade, sections of Queen Street will remain closed and the Mardi Gras will begin. Be sure to check the event map ahead of time to smoothly navigate the entry and exit points.

The Burdekin Water Festival is more than just a parade; it’s a reflection of the community’s collaborative spirit. The festival committee has worked closely with local organizations like the Queensland Police Service, State Emergency Service, and the Burdekin Shire Council to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely. This teamwork underscores the event's importance to the region, bringing together various groups to create an unforgettable experience.

Each float in the parade represents hours of hard work and dedication. Participating groups, from local schools to businesses, have been busy crafting their entries, eager to impress the crowds and judges with prizes awarded for The Best Junior Ambassador Float, The Best Senior Ambassador Float, The Best Theme Float and Grand Champion Float. Coordinators have been appointed for each group to manage the details, from ensuring safety measures are in place to adding the final touches to their floats. The parade is not just about showcasing creativity but also about bringing people together in a shared effort.

The Burdekin Water Festival is also a chance to experience the best of Burdekin’s community spirit. Volunteers, including parade marshals, will be on hand throughout the evening to help guide participants and ensure the safety of everyone involved. These marshals play a crucial role in keeping the parade on track and ensuring that both participants and spectators have a great time.

Spectators can look forward to a lively procession of floats, with each one bringing something unique to the parade. From beautifully decorated vehicles to groups in themed costumes, the parade is a visual feast that reflects the diversity and creativity of the Burdekin community.

The event is designed to be family-friendly, with something for everyone to enjoy. While the parade is the main attraction, Queen Street will be buzzing with activity, offering a variety of stalls, food options, and entertainment throughout the evening. Whether you’re there to cheer on the parade, sample local delicacies, or simply soak in the atmosphere, the Water Festival is a celebration of everything that makes Burdekin special.

While the focus is on fun, safety is always a priority. The festival committee has put measures in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the event without worry. From ensuring floats are safe and well-managed to encouraging responsible behaviour from all attendees, the organizers have thought of everything to make the night both enjoyable and secure.

As the Burdekin Water Festival Mardi Gras draws near, the excitement is palpable. This cherished event, back after years of absence, brings the community together in a way that few others do, offering a night of joy, pride, and celebration. So, gather your family and friends, head to Queen Street, and get ready to be part of a Burdekin tradition that celebrates the best of the region.

A Sneak Peek Into ‘The Visitors’ Show

August 29, 2024

Theatre enthusiasts and history buffs alike are eagerly anticipating the upcoming production of The Visitors, a powerful theatrical work co-produced by Moogahlin Performing Arts and the Sydney Theatre Company. Written by acclaimed playwright Jane Harrison and directed by Wesley Enoch, the play delves into a pivotal moment in Australian history, offering a compelling narrative that resonates with the present.

Set in January 1788, The Visitors unfolds on a sweltering day when seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. These leaders, six seasoned Elders and one new initiate are faced with a momentous decision as they witness a mysterious fleet of giant ships approaching their shores. Their deliberation, filled with humour, banter, and deep cultural protocols, centres around whether to send the newcomers away or to welcome them. This decision, made against the backdrop of impending change, reflects the broader tensions of community responses to the unknown and the pressures of outside forces.

The play is a deeply researched exploration of one of Australia's most impactful and painful days, offering an authentic First Nations perspective on the arrival of the First Fleet. The creative team, which includes Cultural Liaison Aunty Yvonne Simms and Dharug & Dharawal Language Teachers Corina Norman and Jordan Ryan-Hennessey, has worked closely with Elders to ensure cultural accuracy and respect. The production is enhanced by a rich set and costume design by Elizabeth Gadsby, with soundscapes crafted by composer Brendon Boney and lighting by Karen Norris.

The Visitors is more than just a historical play; it is a riveting study of how communities navigate change and the power dynamics that come with it. The actors, including Sean Dow, Stephen Geronimos, and Beau Dean Riley Smith, bring the characters to life with a sense of urgency and authenticity that has earned the production critical acclaim. The novel adaptation of The Visitors has already won the 2024 Indie Book Debut Fiction Award, further solidifying its impact in both literary and theatrical circles.

Audiences can expect a 75-minute performance that not only entertains but also challenges perceptions of history and community. With its deep cultural roots and relevant themes, The Visitors promises to be a thought-provoking experience that invites viewers to reflect on the past while considering its implications for the future.

Tickets for The Visitors are now on sale, and the production is set to be a highlight of the theatrical season, drawing in audiences from diverse backgrounds to engage with this significant and powerful work.

The Visitors promises to be an excellent show

Gospel Festival Lights Up Burdekin

August 29, 2024

The recent Gospel Festival in Burdekin proved that nothing can dampen the community’s spirit. Despite challenging weather conditions, the festival saw enthusiastic attendance, including guests who travelled from as far as Bowen. The event was a resounding success, featuring notable performances and a vibrant atmosphere.

One of the highlights was the guest performance by Brisbane’s Dan Warlow, who delivered a memorable set that included the moving song "No Turning Back." The indoor setting provided a comfortable and engaging environment, which greatly enhanced the experience for attendees. Other standout acts included Leroy from the Undercover Band and Andrew Ballin, whose performances added to the festival's diverse lineup.

A particularly touching moment was the debut performance by the youth group from Burdekin Uniting Church. Their stage appearance was a first for some, and it was heartening to see the younger generation stepping into the spotlight. This initiative is a wonderful way to build and encourage local youth talent.

The festival’s shift from an outdoor plan to an indoor venue proved to be a fortuitous change. The indoor setting offered cozy seating and an intimate atmosphere, which attendees appreciated. Many found the indoor experience to be a pleasant surprise, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the event.

The sense of community at the festival was palpable. Attendees and performers alike shared a deep appreciation for music and each other’s company. Feedback from friends and family who attended was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return next year.

While some planned stalls and activities were cancelled, the festival still featured engaging contributions from the Scouts and Chaplaincy, which were well-received by those present.

Overall, the Gospel Festival not only showcased incredible talent but also strengthened the bonds within the Burdekin community. The event's success highlights the area’s love for music and the power of coming together to celebrate it.

Planter Workshop Blooms With Creativity

August 15, 2024

This past Saturday, Brandon was abuzz with green-thumb enthusiasts at the much-anticipated Succulent Terracotta Planter Workshop. Held at 3pm, the event drew a diverse crowd eager to get their hands dirty and create stunning plant displays.

Participants had the opportunity to pot one larger succulent and arrange six to eight smaller succulents or cacti. The array of decorative elements, including pebbles, quartz crystals, shells, and driftwood, allowed attendees to add personalised touches to their planters. The workshop’s host had thoughtfully selected a variety of fabulous succulents, ensuring everyone had access to the best plants for their creations.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as attendees shared tips, ideas, and stories. The hands-on experience was both educational and fun, with many participants learning new techniques for succulent care and arrangement. By the end of the session, everyone left with beautiful, custom-made planters to display in their homes.

The workshop not only provided a creative outlet but also fostered a sense of community among local plant lovers. As the event concluded, smiles and laughter filled the air, and many expressed their eagerness for future workshops.

For those who missed out, stay tuned for upcoming events, as the Little Leaves Nursery’s Succulent Terracotta Planter Workshop promises to return with more opportunities to get creative and connect with fellow plant enthusiasts including a regular monthly high tea as well as regular adult and children’s workshops alike.

Book Cover Comp For Local Writers Festival Longlist Announced

August 15, 2024

The eagerly awaited return of the Whitsundays Writers Festival in September 2024 offers an exciting opportunity for writers, poets, and book cover designers across Australia.
In a bold initiative, the Festival launched earlier this year the Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards, offering substantial cash prizes to recognise and honour outstanding contributions to the literary and design landscape.
The Heart Awards’ mission is to spotlight the diverse talents within the Australian creative community while also paying homage to the captivating Heart Reef—a natural wonder found in the Whitsundays region.
Festival President Karen Jacobsen expressed enthusiasm for the awards program, “We believe in celebrating the richness of Australian creativity in all its forms. The Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards are a testament to our commitment to recognising and rewarding the extraordinary talents within our community,” remarked Karen.
The Heart Award for Best Published Book Cover Design offers a first prize of $1,500 and $500 for the runner up for original design works for books published in Australia between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024 and offered for sale to the public.
Book covers in any genre were eligible, as were printed books, ebooks and audio book cover designs.
We are delighted to announce the longlisted submissions for the 2024 Best Published Book Cover Design award:
   • A Leaf Called Greaf, designer Rebecca Mills.
   • Birdy, designer Imogen Stubbs.
   • Courage Be My Friend, designer Rebecca Mills.
   • I am the Mau, designer Rebecca Mills.
   • Minutiae, poet and painter Kirsten Johnston.
   • Mums and Mogs, author and illustrator Mick Elliot.
   • The Furphy Anthology 2023, designer Josh Durham/Design by Committee.
   • The Skeleton House, designer Nada Backovic.
   • They Who Nicked the Sun, designer Nicola Matthews.
   • Those Girls, designer Walker Books.
The judging panel have diligently reviewed submissions for the Best Published Book Cover Design award against three selection criteria of title clarity and genre indication, visual appeal and tone setting, and introduction of key elements and design.
The longlist submissions are currently under further consideration. From the longlist, a final shortlist will be selected, and winners announced on Saturday 7 September 2024 at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
“In a world where first impressions matter, book covers serve as visual gateways to literary worlds. We are proud to shine a spotlight on the designers whose artistry enriches the literary landscape,” Karen remarked. “There is little recognition for our designers and the cover prize is a timely addition to the Heart Awards.”
The Festival is grateful for the generous support by the major venue partner the Whitsunday Sailing Club in hosting this year’s event.
