After dazzling the Burdekin with his Home for Christmas show last year, revered performer Darren Coggan is returning to the region this April with Remember the Days of Cat Stevens—a tribute to the timeless music and story of one of the world’s most beloved singer-songwriters.

Coggan, a Golden Guitar-winning country artist and TV presenter, has spent the last decade touring the world with the acclaimed Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story. He has performed at venues including Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Glasgow Concert Hall, and Liverpool Philharmonic, and in 2007 was even invited to meet Stevens himself.

“There are some personal reflections on the experience I had being invited to London to meet with the great Cat Stevens, where I heard first-hand some of the many anecdotes and stories that I have enjoyed sharing with our audiences over the past ten years,” Coggan says.

Stevens’ music continues to resonate across generations. Hits like Peace Train, Moonshadow, Wild World, and Father and Son remain as impactful today as when they were written. Coggan says performing these songs is both challenging and rewarding.

“The songs say something, ask questions, make statements—they have intelligent, poetic lyrics, and musically, while simplistic in presentation, they are very complex and always fun and challenging to perform,” he says.

“I do love this show and never tire of performing the songs. I love seeing the reaction from the audience each night and seeing them all stand up with an ovation—something I’ll never take for granted.”

Remember the Days of Cat Stevens goes beyond the hits, offering insight into the man behind the music and the lessons that can be derived from his wisdom.

“Perhaps the greatest thing I took home from my meeting with Cat Stevens was the realisation that we all have the ability to make changes in our lives, should we not be content with who we are or where we are,” he says.

“Every generation has the chance to change their world, and I pray that we have the courage to face up to the realities of our time and let ourselves feel deeply enough so that it transforms us and our children's future.”

For Burdekin audiences, the show promises more than nostalgia. It offers an evening of storytelling, reflection, and timeless music brought to life by one of Australia’s most versatile performers.

Local artist René Le Feuvre is set to take the Burdekin stage once again, this time as a special guest at the 2026 NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase, where he will join ARIA Award–winner Conrad Sewell later this month for a weekend dedicated to celebrating emerging musical talent.

Fresh from touring internationally as a support act for Sewell, René is bringing his growing global experience back home for the showcase on Friday evening at the Burdekin Memorial Hall.

Born and raised in the Burdekin, the former Ayr State High School student has quickly built a reputation for high‑energy performances and has amassed more than two million streams, performing across Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America.

René will take part in the Friday evening workshop, serve as a guest judge for the Friday Night Heat, and deliver a live performance, sharing insights and inspiration with Fast Track participants.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort described René’s return as “incredibly special for the community,” highlighting his journey as a strong example of what local talent can achieve.

“Fast Track is all about nurturing and showcasing emerging talent, and René’s journey is a powerful example of where passion and dedication can lead,” she said.

The NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase continues to grow as one of the region’s premier platforms for emerging performers, offering professional development alongside live performance opportunities.

Last year’s winner, 17-year-old Blake Hanks from Airlie Beach, has already taken his first steps onto the national stage, performing at Sydney’s Double Bay Christmas Carols alongside Dami Im, Sheppard, and other major Australian acts in front of a crowd of over 10,000.

Tickets for this year's showcase are priced at $10 for access to all three heats across Friday and Saturday. The weekend will culminate with the Final Showcase, featuring a live performance from Conrad Sewell and Le Feuvre.

Local photographers have the chance to showcase the beauty of the Burdekin region with the launch of Sunwater’s third annual photo competition.

The competition invites submissions of striking images featuring Sunwater dams, weirs, irrigation channels, or snapshots of locals enjoying these sites for recreation.

The winning photo will grace the cover of the 2027 Sunwater Calendar, while 12 additional finalists will have their work featured throughout the calendar and receive prizes.

The contest is open to all Queensland residents aged 18 and over, with no limit on the number of entries. To qualify, photos must be taken from publicly accessible areas, and entrants are reminded to follow all on-site safety signage and guidelines.

The initiative aims to highlight the region’s natural beauty and the talent of local photographers.

“[We] look forward to celebrating the beauty of regional Queensland’s landscapes and the creativity of the local photographers who capture them,” said a Sunwater Spokesperson.

Local artists and community groups have the chance to secure funding for their next creative project, with applications now open for the 2026 Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

The program supports arts-based workshops, events and creative initiatives across the Burdekin, with applications closing Monday, 30 March 2026.

Burdekin Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the fund continues to strengthen the region’s creative sector.

“The Regional Arts Development Fund plays a vital role in supporting and growing our local arts community,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“It enables individuals and groups to develop and showcase their talents, while also enriching the cultural landscape of the Burdekin.

“It’s fantastic to see so many successful projects come to life through RADF funding, and we encourage anyone with an artistic vision to apply.”

Previous recipients have included the Lower Burdekin Celtic Dancing Association, Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company, Burdekin Uniting Church, Burdekin Shire Youth Council, Burdekin Woodcrafts Association and Burdekin Potters.

Funded projects in past rounds have delivered workshops, performances and festivals designed to build local skills, increase cultural participation and bring the community together.

Following consecutive sold-out shows to close out 2025, the Home Hill Choral Society has begun preparations for its first production of the year—an Irish-inspired show bringing together singing, acting, and local talent.

Hitting The Vault in late March, the show—titled ’All Things Irish’—is set to mark St. Patrick’s Day with a weekend of Irish-themed musical numbers, skits and humour.

Writer and producer of the show Erin Brennan says the show has something for everyone.

“The show is for anyone who just wants to have a good night out,” said Brennan.

“Irish music is very lifting for the spirit. We just want everyone to enjoy themselves, forget about their woes for a while and have a good old laugh.”

She said the script draws from an array of Irish influences—including her own roots.

“I’m always looking around, reading joke books, and trying to convert them into skits that suit the theme of our shows,” said Brennan.

“I have Irish heritage myself… I just know how fun they are, and the pub atmosphere over there.”

The group have been rehearsing for the show since early February—a quicker turnaround than usual, said Brennan.

“[The biggest hurdle] is working around people’s lifestyles,” she said.

“Hopefully we can get everyone to commit for the last lot of rehearsals.”

Performances are scheduled for 20, 21, 22, and 27 March, giving audiences several chances to catch the Home Hill Choral Society’s lively show. Tickets are available now, with organisers encouraging locals to secure their seats early for what promises to be a memorable night of music and entertainment.

Burdekin Shire Youth Council, with the support of Burdekin Shire Council, is pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the 2026 NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase, returning to the Burdekin this March.

Performers of all ages and all talent genres are encouraged to register, with over $6,000 in cash and prizes on offer. The Showcase continues to provide a significant platform for emerging regional performers to demonstrate their skills in front of industry professionals.

This year’s event will be held at the Burdekin Memorial Hall on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March 2026. Due to ongoing renovations at the Burdekin Theatre, the Memorial Hall will host a more relaxed, table-seated format for the highly anticipated Finals Showcase, with food and beverages available for attendees.

A special guest performer and judge will be announced shortly.

Burdekin Shire is proud to host Queensland’s only Fast Track Talent Showcase, giving regional performers a rare opportunity to gain exposure in front of world-class talent management company Yoyo Music, alongside a panel of special guest judges.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the return of the event reflects Council’s continued commitment to supporting the arts and local performers.

“The Fast Track Talent Showcase has become one of our community’s most cherished family events, and we are excited to welcome it back in 2026,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“The showcase offers a unique opportunity unlike any other performance or stage experience in the Burdekin – whether you’re new to performing or seeking greater exposure, it truly caters to everyone.

“The program not only highlights the incredible talent within our region but also provides young performers with genuine pathways to pursue their aspirations.

“Council is proud to support an event that encourages creativity, builds confidence, and strengthens community spirit across the Burdekin.”

The Zonta Club of Burdekin Inc is set to celebrate International Women’s Day with its much-anticipated annual Afternoon Tea, to be held on Sunday, 8 March 2026.

Tickets for the popular event went on sale at 8am on Monday, 9 February, and organisers are encouraging the community to secure their seats early, with the event traditionally selling out quickly.

This year’s theme, “Cruise with Zonta,” promises a relaxed and uplifting afternoon celebrating women, friendship and community spirit. Guests are invited to arrive from 1.30pm for a 2pm start, with the event to be hosted at the Masonic Heritage Centre.

Attendees can look forward to a delightful afternoon tea, an inspiring guest speaker and a range of engaging activities, all while supporting Zonta’s ongoing mission to build a better world for women and girls.

The Zonta Club of Burdekin encourages community members to mark the date, invite friends and join in the celebration of International Women’s Day in a warm and welcoming setting.

Burdekin Shire Council is set to commence a landmark program of backstage improvements at the Burdekin Theatre, with works scheduled to begin in February 2026.

This upgrade represents a major milestone for our community, delivering the first renewal of the backstage areas since the theatre opened in 1982.

These original spaces have served countless school productions, dance festivals, local performance groups and visiting shows, and are now ready for their long‑awaited modernisation.

The project will deliver a full refurbishment of the theatre stage and a complete upgrade of the dressing rooms, transformations that will enhance comfort, functionality and accessibility for performers and production crews, while supporting the continued use of the venue by the community.

Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the works mark an exciting moment for the Burdekin and will ensure the Burdekin Theatre continues to support local performers and visiting productions into the future.

“The Burdekin Theatre plays a vital role in our community, particularly for young people who regularly take to the stage through school productions, dance festivals and local performance groups,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“These improvements are long overdue and will provide safer, more functional backstage facilities that better support the high level of talent we see in the Burdekin each year.”

Council is proud to support the region’s strong performing arts culture, including events such as the Burdekin Junior Eisteddfod, Verve Dance Festival, Fast Track Talent Showcase, local dance school concerts, and school musicals and performances.

Upgrade works will be carried out from February through to May 2026. During this period, the Burdekin Theatre will remain open; however, no performances will be held on the Auditorium stage while the works are underway.

The Burdekin Theatre Box Office will continue to operate as usual, opening Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm to assist patrons with ticket sales, enquiries and general information.

A Year of Music and Community

The Home Hill Choral Society enjoyed a vibrant and successful 2025, strengthening its role as a key contributor to the region’s cultural life. The year was marked by a busy performance schedule, competition appearances, and community engagement that brought music to audiences across the Burdekin.

One of the highlights came in May, when the choir competed at the North Queensland Eisteddfod in Townsville. In the Small Choir category, the 14-member ensemble performed a varied selection including sacred works and lighter pieces, achieving strong recognition and showcasing the group’s versatility and dedication. The event underscored the choir’s commitment to excellence and its ability to represent Home Hill on a regional stage.

Throughout the year, the Society maintained a full calendar of performances, including regular shows and special community events. Theatre-restaurant productions remained popular, while lighter choral pieces and themed skits added variety to the program. The group also contributed to local cultural events, performing alongside visiting artists and participating in community celebrations that highlighted local talent and brought the joy of live music to diverse audiences.

The festive season offered a unique opportunity for the choir to engage with the wider public, performing Christmas carols in shopping centres and other public spaces. These performances emphasized the group’s focus on outreach, celebrating the holiday season while creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

As the Home Hill Choral Society looks ahead to 2026, plans are already underway for new productions and continued involvement in regional competitions and community events. The year concluded as a testament to the choir’s enduring presence in Home Hill, its dedication to music, and its commitment to bringing the community together through performance.

Are you artistic? Would you like to use your talents with woodworking, one of the world’s oldest artforms? Or would you just like to learn a new skill in the company of like-minded, friendly people? Then perhaps Burdekin Woodcrafts Association is for you.

The Association is a group of men and women who enjoy creating lovely and useful items for themselves, for their families, and for community needs. For example, in the past year they have, among many other items, made trophies for the Pickleball Cane Cutters Tournament, a large shield trophy for Home Hill Bowls Club, a table mounted lectern for the Homer hill Chamber of Commerce, a large book case for a customer, and had displays at the Sweet Days, Hot Nights cane cutting championships, the Burdekin Show, and the Burdekin Water Festival.

There were some special highlights as well. As Association Vice President Merv Mohr explained, “We were fortunate to receive a large grant from RACQ to help us replace some of our roof, and a large section of repainting. As well, we received donations of $4000 from Ayr Rotary Club, and $1000 from the Ayr Anzac Memorial Club. We were soon after invited to buy a large quantity of furniture grade timber from Townsville, already slabbed and dressed, which we would not have been able to afford without that generosity."

“We are looking ahead into 2026,” he continued.

"With plans to conduct a workshop to teach members how to make a “Bandsaw box”, where jewellery boxes are made to graceful shapes using only a band saw, and we have received an RADF grant for a woodturning workshop in the middle of May.”

They stress that you don’t have to have great skills to be a member. “I was hopeless at Manual Arts at High School”, said Club Treasurer Phillip Scuderi, “but I was encouraged to join, and with the guidance of the members, hands-on experience, and attention to detail, I have made a large dining table with eight upholstered chairs, and two bedroom suites, as well as many other smaller items for family and friends."

The public is invited to come to the workshop to perhaps purchase a custom made craft item from their display, and people wishing to join, or to find out more about the Association, can be assured of a warm welcome. The Association is open to men and women of all ages from 12 to, as Mr Scuderi quipped, “Still breathing and able to use your hands”.
