In support of the Burdekin Academy’s Junior Water Festival Ambassadors, Cole and Stella, the Academy are excited to announce their fundraising event, "The Amazing Race!"

The event will kick off at 1pm at the Ayr Hotel on Saturday 24 August, with teams set to tackle their first challenge and receive their first clue. This clue will send them on an adventure around the Burdekin area, where they will hunt for clues and complete various challenges!

Participants can expect a variety of tasks, including food challenges, photo challenges, easy physical activities, and gathering local information, and the race will conclude back at the Ayr Hotel once all the required challenges are completed.

Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed team, first place, and several other categories throughout the race along with extreme bragging rights to be bestowed upon the celebrated winner of The Amazing Race!

September brings the much-anticipated return of the Whitsundays Writers Festival. The festival offers an exciting opportunity for writers, poets, and book cover designers across Australia.
The three-day event will feature a dynamic blend of genres, ranging from crime and memoir to romance and screenwriting, complemented by interactive workshops, panel discussions, and engaging author talks.
In a daring and exciting move, the festival launched the Whitsundays Literary Heart Awards earlier this year. These prestigious awards feature substantial cash prizes and are dedicated to recognising and celebrating exceptional achievements in both the literary and design fields. By highlighting outstanding contributions, the awards aim to raise the profile of talented individuals and innovative work, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts and encouraging further creativity and excellence in the industry.
The Heart Awards’ mission is to spotlight the diverse talents within the Australian creative community while also paying homage to the captivating Heart Reef— one of the natural wonders found in the Whitsundays region.
Festival President, Karen Jacobsen, expressed her enthusiasm for the awards program:
“Poetry is one of the most accessible forms of expression in the arts. Through the Heart Awards, we have been thrilled to provide seasoned poets through to budding wordsmiths the opportunity to celebrate verse and voice in our Poetry Prize.”
The Heart Award Poetry Prize offers a showstopping first prize of $1,000 and $500 for the runner up. The award sought submissions from around Australia of up to 50-lines of unpublished poems.

The longlist submissions are currently under further consideration. From the longlist, the panel will then choose a final shortlist and winners will be announced on Saturday 7 September 2024 at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
Poetry enthusiasts at the festival can also showcase their lyrical prowess at a special ‘karaoke style’ event that is taking place on Friday 6 September. At this event attendees can step up to the mic and share their verses in an intimate and supportive atmosphere.
"We are delighted to provide a platform for poets to share their work and connect with fellow lovers of language," Festival President, Karen Jacobsen stated.

The Tropical Brain and Mind Foundation (TBMF) is proud to announce their Tropical Laughs event series, a unique initiative combining the power of humour and laughter to promote mental health and well-being.

This series features Australia’s only full-time professional comedian with a Master's degree in Suicidology, Mark McConville.

The event series features Laughter Clinics tailored for various groups, along with a Comedy Night where both Mark McConville and Ellen Briggs take the stage, delivering a night filled with hilarious anecdotes, sharp wit, and side-splitting punchlines.

TBMF Chair Cathy Day said “We're thrilled to create the Tropical Laughs event series for Townsville.”

“Our aim is to create a space where the community can come together, laugh, and learn about the profound mental health benefits of humour. Laughter truly is a powerful tool for self-care and stress relief.”

Mr McConville said, “Laughter is often called the best medicine, but I believe it’s only half the story.”

“Humour and laughter together provide immense psychological and physical benefits.

The spectacular talents of the Burdekin Christian College’s students in years Prep through to 12 will be staged at the Burdekin Theatre on Friday 2 August when the school performs their musical production Seussical Jr.!

Under the direction of dedicated teachers and staff members, each student holds an integral role in the performance, from backstage to under the spotlight.

The musical will open with the school’s youngest stars in levels Prep to Year 2 shining brightly with a carefully choreographed performance perfected with the guidance of Mrs Vardanega. The main performance will be led by students from Year 3 to Year 12, who have been working tirelessly in their music classes led by Mr Lequerica and of Mrs Vardanega, and in extracurricular rehearsals, with their hard work set to pay off in a vibrant, colourful spectacle.

“Get ready for a dazzling and delightful performance as our school proudly presents the much-anticipated musical, Seussical Jr.,” shared BCC secondary teacher Mrs Wilson.

Burdekin Christian College Year 11 student, Cecillia Cason will star as Gertrude McFuzz in the school’s upcoming production of Seussical Jr.

“I love music in general and being able to share it with others makes me happy. I love the experience of working with a well put together cast and crew and the experience overall is just something to be excited about.

I have performed in front of an audience multiple times due to being in different bands, but this is only my 2nd time as a character in a musical. Last year I was Mother Abbess in Burdekin Christian College's ‘Sound of Music’.

What I love most in ‘Seussical Jr.’ is Gertrude's character quirks. She has some pretty funny lines and moments, which make it really fun to play her character and add my own little twist to it.”

“My name is Sioeli Ma'u, otherwise known as Joe, I am currently in Year 11, and I will be playing Horton the Elephant in the musical based on books written by the popular author, Dr Suess, the Seussical.

I am excited for the performance, getting to perform for people in one of my first ever musicals, showcasing my talent through acting as well as singing.

I have performed many times before, mostly for singing but also playing different instruments, but this would be my first time participating in a "theatre" act. I love being part of this amazing group as I get to work with many of my peers, but also learn from the teachers like Mr Lequerica and the experience he has, being in the Burdekin Singers, but also the likes of Mrs Wilson and her expertise in the field of drama.

“I look forward to being able to perform for you on the 2nd of August down at the Burdekin Theatre.”

Year 9 student, Harry Kaminski will shine as the classic, and much-loved character, Cat in The Hat for the August production.

Most excited about the opportunity to entertain others young or old and experiment with his voice, Harry has an impressive theatre resume.

“I’ve performed for an audience so many times, so here’s a list: Mary Poppins, Junglebook, Oliver Jr, Drama Fest 3 years in a row, Sound of Music, Wind in The Willows, Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo Jr, Seussical, Perform Music concerts 3 years in a row.

Being the Cat in The Hat gives me the chance to be as big as I can and make interesting characters that kids will enjoy.”

Emily Pacey

In her final year at Burdekin Christian College, Year 12 student Emily Pacey will impress audiences when she stuns as JoJo and is most excited to be able to tell a story to and entertain audiences.

“I have performed in every musical at Burdekin Christian College from being JoJo in our first Seussical the Musical kids, playing Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins, Shirley in Strictly Ballroom and Maria in The Sound of Music.

Musicals are fun and creative, and I am able to explore a story of imagination and feelings.”

Seinimili Ma'u

Seinimili Ma'u is in Year 9 at Burdekin Christian College and with a love for signing, will wow audiences in the role of Sour Kangaroo.

With the performance just around the corner, Seinimili is most excited to perform in front of an audience.

“I have performed at church, eisteddfod and other places and events too.

I love being able to do something I have a passion about with friends and family.”

The Burdekin Brass Band stands as a treasured organisation within the community, and their annual showcase provides an ultimate opportunity for the region to indulge in the speculator talents of both emerging and experienced musicians. Within the 2024 edition of Burdekin Brass Live, Kerry Flynn will conduct a band encompassing members from both the Burdekin, and the Thuringowa Band, with both large ensemble performances, and solo showcases set to impress.

Audiences are to be on the look out to highlight many of the Burdekin Brass Band’s professional musicians in the making, with the talents of the celebrated Cecilia Cason staged throughout the showcase. Along with Cecilia, audiences are advised to keep an eye out for Jye Ravizza, and David Kelly, who both made their debut in the Burdekin Brass Band Learner Classes and have progressed their abilities to impressive heights to now be part of the central band.

The Burdekin Brass Band’s junior members play alongside many long-time musicians including Joe Giddy, Ray Petersen, and Leon Stucus, who collectively hold far more than a lifetimes worth of musical expertise.  

“This performance is to show both the abilities of all our members and to attract new members of all ages and abilities,” explained Burdekin Brass Band member Madison Robinson.

“There is an emphasis on junior players to join the Burdekin Brass Learner Classes to strengthen our band and ensure we are around to entertain the Burdekin community for many years to come.”

Preparations for the showcase have been well underway for many months now, and the dedication of the band members, committee members, and volunteers have ensured the 2024 performance of Burdekin Brass Live will be the best yet.

“All the band members are getting excited for the upcoming fourth annual Burdekin Brass Live – every year the concert gets bigger and better, and the band is just so excited to see what this year brings,” expressed Madison.

The Whitsundays Writers Festival has announced the inaugural Lover Letter to Queensland event, which is set to take place on Thursday 5 September 2024 at the Coral Sea Resort ballroom in Airlie Beach.
The event aims to highlight the deep community spirit and affection of Queensland through heartfelt stories and expressions of love.
The writing competition invites individuals to share their personal stories and tributes to Queensland, fostering a sense of unity and pride.
The competition offers prizes for best submissions in the categories of Adult ($500), Under 18 Years ($250), and Under 12 years ($200) plus Highly Commended Certificates. The competition is accepting entries up to 300 words, and submissions close on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
The Love Letter to Queensland Event will also feature a stimulating lineup of noteworthy speakers. Each speaker will present their own love letters to Queensland, offering a diverse array of perspectives and experiences.
Big names include, Marco Renai, Elizabeth Hackett, Dr. Chris Sarra, Dr. Melissa Ashley, Karen Jacobsen, Andrew Wilcox MP, Federal Member for Dawson.
Marco Renai was awarded the 2024 Queenslander of the Year and is recognised for his impactful work with at-risk youth through the Men of Business program, giving them the skills, knowledge and confidence to be happy, healthy and successful.
Elizabeth Hackett, is Executive Chair of the Australian Adventure Tourism Group, and is well known for her significant contributions to the tourism industry in Australia and New Zealand alongside The Whitsunday Skyway Project.
Dr. Chris Sarra, is the CEO for the Office of First Nations Engagement and Innovation, leading initiatives for youth engagement within Queensland.
Also joining the lineup is Dr. Melissa Ashley, an award-winning author of historical fiction novels and celebrated academic will also be in attendance at the event.
President of the Whitsunday Writers Festival, international speaker, and the voice behind a billion GPS and smartphone devices and author Karen Jacobson will also be speaking at the event.
In addition, Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox MP will be at the event to announce and read the winning love letter to the Queensland community writing competition entries.

Morning Melodies: A Farewell to Doris

Melinda Schneider returns to the stage in 2024 to pay tribute to the legendary Doris Day.
The world lost one of its biggest stars with the passing of Doris Day. A legend of stage, screen and song, Doris died aged 97, leaving behind an incredible body of work, including iconic movies and unforgettable songs.
Doris Day, “the girl next door”, had millions of fans around the world, none bigger than chart-topping Australian singer songwriter Melinda Schneider, who has recorded two albums of Doris’ songs, co-written and starred in a theatre show based on Doris’ life, and done sell-out tours celebrating Doris’ work.
Melinda Schneider’s, A Farewell To Doris, is a heartfelt tribute to Doris Day. This nostalgic concert celebration will include timeless hits as well as a number of Doris’ big band standards.

In a world wild with tainted fruit, and fragile footwear, Burdekin Singers & Theatre Company’s August production of Disenchanted! will have audiences questioning the princesses they know and love.

A comical musical, Disenchanted! throws poisoned apples, sparkling tiaras and glass slippers out the window as Snow White and her posse of disenchanted princesses set the record straight. Unhappy with how they’re portrayed in today’s pop culture, many iconic royal renegades will deliver both the truth and a generous serving of laughs to you on a silver platter.

An all-female production, the Burdekin Singers & Theatre Company will stage a “fiercely talented group of princesses” as they share their stories.

Weary of apples, Anita Julyan will stun as Snow White.

A princess who prioritises her Z’s, Sleeping Beauty will be spectacularly played by Bronwyn Nucifora.

Wishing to be a part of our world, Anna Wallace will impress as the Little Mermaid.

Olivia Licciardello will star as glass slipper wearing Cinderella.

Painting with all the colours of the wind, Eliza Worlein will perform as Pochahontas.

Forever taming her luscious locks, Chanelle Redgwell will dazzle as Rapunzle.

A princess in love with a beast, Belle will be beautifully played by Madeleine Arboit.

The Whitsundays will overflow with literature and creativity when the highly anticipated Whitsundays Writers Festival graces the region from 6 to 8 September.

The full, star-studded Festival Program features many highly talented and commendable literary professionals including Shankari Chandran, Garry Disher, Sally Hepworth, Kirsty Manning, Christos Tsiolkas, Anne Buist, Graeme Simsion, Karina Kilmore, Melissa Ashley, Jack Roney, Joy Damousi, Nick Earls, and Linsday Simpson will be staged over the September weekend.

Here is a sneak peek of the festival itinerary:

Friday 6 September will be held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, featuring the following sessions, or program chapters:
   • The Art and Joy of Storytelling.
   • Cops and Robbers: Writing and reading crime and thrillers.
   • Responsible Writing? Stories about people, relationships, the world and possible ramifications.
   • Spotlight On: Writing craft, from first draft to final manuscript.
   • For Quill to Code: Is artificial intelligence revolutionising or ruining the future of creative writing?
   • Poetry Karaoke: Over drinks and a Whitsundays sunset, attendees can get up to the mic and share their verse in an intimate and supportive atmosphere. This event will also include readings of the shortlisted Whitsundays Literary Heart Award Poetry Prize submissions.
On Saturday 7 September, a number of stand-out occasions:
   • From the Heart: The inaugural Festival Address by Shankari Chandran.
   • Whitsundays Literary Heart Award announcements for the Gloria Burley Award for Best Unpublished Manuscript, Best Short Story (adult and under 18 divisions), Poetry Prize, and Best Published Book Cover Design.
   • Adaptation: From page to stage and screen.
   • Spotlight On: Research and bringing authenticity to fiction.
   • Hour of Power: Meet your favourite author and have your book signed by guest speakers and Featured Local Authors.
   • The Big Book Club High Tea featuring Sally Hepworth and Kristy Manning.

To conclude the 2024 Whitsundays Writers Festival, Sunday 8 September will include a number of sessions including a new release showcase, discovery sessions on having the courage to share your story, writing for personal and professional development, traditional, hybrid and self-publishing and memoir.

The Festival will come to an official close with a Local Author Long Lunch.

The Burdekin Brass Band will ignite the Burdekin Theatre for an afternoon overflowing with music and local talent on Sunday 4 August from 2pm.

The Burdekin Brass Live performance will encompass 18 – 20 members of the local Burdekin Brass Band, 12 members originating from bands within the schools of the region, and 26 Thuringowa Brass members.

Together the group of talented, experienced and beginner musicians will perform a celebrated selection of music everyone will know and love with both the Burdekin and Thuringowa Brass Bands combining for a final performance to close the night.

In an exciting sneak peek, Burdekin Brass Band member, Madison Robinson, shared an insight into what audiences can expect from the spectacular showcase.

“We can’t give away all our secrets, but I can let you know that there will be some big hits from the likes of Freddy Mercury, John Denver, and The Proclaimers – so if you want to hear some great music from the decades, make sure you clear the calendar to attend on 4 August,” Madison enthused.

With approximately 46 talented musicians set to impress audiences, the 2024 performance of Burdekin Brass Live will include numerous rising stars, and lifelong members all led by the celebrated conductor, Kerry Flynn.

Cornet player, Joe Giddy has been a member of the Burdekin Brass Band for almost 30 years, and his dedication is shared by long-time members, Ray Petersen, and former education music teacher and member of the Navy Band, Leon Stucus.

The August performance will also stage the talents of many rising stars within the band including Jye Ravizza, Cecilia Cason, and David Kelly who have all attended several Queensland Band Associations Youth Camps and developed their skills from beginners to soloists.

Over the past few months, the musicians have been busily preparing and rehearsing with the support of the Burdekin Brass Band’s dedicated volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes. Recently, rehearsals have been scheduled weekly to ensure each piece will be performed to perfection.

“The band have been rehearsing the songs weekly now, making sure everything is perfect for the concert as its just around the corner – every rehearsal counts now as we count down to the big performance,’ shared Madison.

Each year, the concert continues to reach new heights, and each member of the band are more than excited to put on an amazing performance for the community. Tickets are available both online on the Burdekin Theatre’s website and via the Burdekin Theatre Box Office.

Explore a Unique WWII Bunker
Journey along the Bruce Highway to discover the historic WWII site at Charlie’s Hill, situated roughly 100km south of Townsville. This radar installation, built by the RAAF in 1943, stands as a testament to Australia's wartime efforts. Step inside the reinforced concrete igloos that once housed radar equipment, offering bomb-proof protection during the war. Although the wooden towers have been removed, the concrete structures and foundations remain, providing a glimpse into the past. Listed in the Queensland Heritage Register, Charlie’s Hill offers a poignant look at military history. Just a six-minute drive south of Home Hill, follow the signs on the Bruce Highway, turn onto Charlie’s Hill Road, and travel about 1.5 kilometres to reach this significant site.
