Lighting Up The Burdekin

Lighting Up The Burdekin

Jeff and Leon’s Christmas Tradition Christmas cheer has blossomed in the Burdekin once again, and the beloved Christmas Lights Guys have continued to wow and delight the region, keeping one of the community’s most treasured traditions alive for almost two decades. Jeff Lunn and Leon McCormack first began decorating their Home Hill home in 2007, but it wasn’t until they moved across the bridge and unveiled their display in Ayr that things truly took off. “It started to pick up in about 2010 after we moved, and it has just gotten bigger, and bigger, and bigger every year as we add extra display pieces to keep things fresh, different and exciting,” Jeff explained. Childhood memories are what initially inspired the pair to ignite what has become such a beautiful local tradition, however, it’s the joy Jeff and Leon see across the faces of everyone who stops by that keeps the pair excited. “Seeing the children, families and the community enjoying themselves and having a good time continues to excite us and that’s all it’s really about and we love having people come around to see the lights,” enthused Jeff. “Growing up in Newcastle, we would do Christmas light drives as a family with mum and dad, and our inspiration to put on these displays has just drawn on from that and from the enjoyment we see from the kids when they come around, and what the whole community gets out of what we do.” What once began as a humble light display, has evolved into a community-oriented festive extravaganza, complete with a radio channel featuring perfectly synchronised tunes to accompany the magic of the dancing lights. Annually, hundreds of visitors flock to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to experience the magical display, while for six months of the year Jeff and Leon work behind the scenes, preparing to outdo the previous year’s spectacle. “Our enjoyment also comes from keeping busy,” added Jeff. “The displays certainly keep us on our toes, and that’s how we like it, we love to keep busy.” In July, the cogs start turning as Jeff and Leon sit down to plan what will stay, what will go, and what will make its debut this festive season, placing orders left, right and centre to ensure everything will arrive in time for the end of year extravaganza. Sunlight streams into Jeff and Leon’s four bay car garage in mid to late August, as the pair roll up the doors and their sleeves to test each and every bulb across thousands of lights in preparation for large-scale display. As late September ticks around, the pair are in full spooky season mode, putting together a wonderfully witching Halloween display, complete with a classic trick or treat dress up party to round out the month of October. With that holiday behind them, Jeff and Leon pack away the frights, and unpack the festive delights, working as hard as a North Pole elf on Christmas Eve to have the house looking ship shape from the 1st of November. On the 23rd of December and of course, Christmas Eve, Santa himself will make an appearance, perched up in his bright red sleigh, ready for family photos from about 7pm onwards. The grill will be up and running, serving up a delicious sausage sizzle, and complimentary popcorn, fairy floss and snow cones will also be on offer to add to the festivities. Jeff and Leon cannot wait to delight the community for the 18th year with their wonderful display, and hope to see plenty of families pop on over to the corner of Edwards and Darwin Streets in Ayr to catch a glimpse of the magic this festive season.

Fast Track To Fame Winner Takes Sydney By Storm

Fast Track To Fame Winner Takes Sydney By Storm

Blake Hanks, winner of this year’s NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase in Ayr, has taken his first steps onto the national stage after performing at Sydney’s Double Bay Christmas Carols on the 23rd of November alongside some of Australia’s biggest names. The 17-year-old Airlie Beach performer, who boasts a strong track record in school musicals, eisteddfods, and talent competitions, was awarded the prestigious Fast Track award in March for his impressive vocal talent. His victory earned him an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney, including a mentoring session with acclaimed performer Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters, California Crooners Club), and the opportunity to showcase his talents to the nation. Blake opened the Double Bay Christmas Carols with festive favourites Holly Jolly Christmas and Winter Wonderland, later performing Last Christmas. He shared the stage with Dami Im, Sheppard, Jael Wena, and Taysha Ferrugia, joining them for the finale before counting down to the fireworks in front of a crowd exceeding 10,000 people. Blake described the experience as “unforgettable." “Thank you to the organisers of Fast Track to Fame - this has truly been an incredible opportunity. Performing alongside such high-calibre artists and meeting Hugh Sheridan was an honour I’ll never forget,” said Hanks. Christine Collyer, Founder of Fast Track Talent, praised Blake’s performance at the Carols event. “Blake was an absolute star and embraced every moment of this opportunity. We’re thrilled to see the Burdekin Shire Council supporting such a fantastic platform for young artists,” she said. Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said Blake’s success demonstrates the impact of local initiatives like Fast Track. “It’s fantastic to see such a significant opportunity arise from a Burdekin event. The Fast Track Talent Showcase not only celebrates local talent but also opens doors for young people to shine on a national stage. Council is proud to support events like these, that create pathways for our youth to achieve their dreams.” Hosted by Burdekin Shire Council and the Burdekin Shire Youth Council, the NQ Fast Track Talent Showcase will return on the 20th to the 21st of March 2026.

Burdekin Machinery Preservationists Celebrate 40 Years

November 7, 2024

The Burdekin Machinery Preservationists are celebrating four decades of dedication to preserving the region’s rich heritage in vintage machinery on Sunday 10th November. With approximately 65 members, the club spans from Chillagoe to Chinchilla, showcasing a commitment to historical preservation across Queensland. The club opens its doors every Monday from April to November, inviting tourists to explore a unique collection, including tractors from the late 1800s, the Burdekin’s first trains, and even a homemade helicopter.
Their annual open day is a special occasion, drawing visitors eager to see these machines in action. Vice President John shared that the club tries to get as many machines running as possible for the public, highlighting the meticulous restoration work that brings these historical pieces back to life. Founding members, still active in the club, are celebrated for their enduring involvement, and this year, they’ll be honoured with a cake-cutting ceremony at 11.30am and a sausage sizzle.
The collection is housed at the historic Renown Picture Theatre, built in 1927, a landmark that itself speaks to the region's past. Alongside machinery, visitors can find memorabilia from local high schools and a comprehensive photographic history of Brandon. The Burdekin Machinery Preservationists stand as the last historical group in the region, committed to preserving the legacy of Burdekin’s vintage machinery and culture for future generations.
New members, especially younger ones and tradespeople are encouraged to join this not-for-profit group and support their efforts to keep Burdekin’s history alive.

Behind The Mic With John Gooding

October 31, 2024

Since 1999, John Gooding has been a staple on Sweet FM, hosting a unique show that blends humour, oddities, and local flavour. Originally joining with a friend to cover night soccer, John’s show quickly evolved into something special, sharing mad and strange stories from around the world every week.
Unlike typical radio shows, John's program doesn’t feature music. Instead, he and his co-host focus on strange news stories. One of the most memorable tales he recalls involved an unfortunate incident during surgery when a patient broke wind, igniting a flame and causing a small fire—a story John still listens to when he needs a laugh.
Preparing for the show is a team effort. "We’re not live; we record on Thursdays, I edit it, and it airs on Saturdays and Mondays," John explains. He and his co-host steer clear of local stories, choosing instead to cover global oddities. John fondly remembers working with Dave Giffard, Sweet FM's long-time sound engineer who managed technical aspects for nearly 20 years. “Dave was invaluable, especially in the early days when we recorded on basic equipment at the council chambers. He had the technical experience that allowed us to focus on content.”
Starting with no experience, John encourages aspiring radio hosts to dive in, even if they’re new. He emphasises the importance of technical expertise, recalling how Dave's guidance helped him and his co-host build confidence. Today, John and his team enjoy the comfort of a studio, though they still face challenges—like a recent power surge that damaged their equipment. "When that happened, we knew it was beyond us!" he laughs.
John believes the key to a good show is adaptability. Years of acting experience taught him to improvise if something goes wrong, and having a co-host to play off makes it easier to keep things flowing.
For his dream guest, John would love to interview Donald Trump, purely for the unpredictability and absurdity he could bring to the show. John encourages anyone interested to volunteer, as Sweet FM is always looking for fresh voices to keep the laughs going.

Townsville Artist Wins Local Sculpture Competition

October 24, 2024

Katya Venter, a talented artist and art teacher from Townsville, has claimed the top prize in prestigious local sculpture competition, Ephemera, as part of the Home Hill Harvest Festival, gaining widespread recognition for her exceptional work.
The winning piece, which merges themes of the sugarcane industry and Australian wildlife, reflects Katya’s unique approach to art and her deep connection to the regional environment. Her sculpture, described as both striking and thought-provoking, stood out amongst entries from across the area, showcasing the artist's versatility and creativity.
When discussing the inspiration behind her winning sculpture, Katya shared her personal ties to the sugarcane industry, which is a major part of the local economy, particularly in Home Hill.
"The sugarcane industry has such a strong presence in the region, and I wanted to honour that," Katya explained.
She also pointed to her long-standing fascination with Australian wildlife, particularly the insects and animals that often go unnoticed in agricultural areas.
"I’ve always been interested in the small creatures that coexist alongside our industries. I wanted to highlight the important but often overlooked relationship between nature and human activity in these environments."
Katya’s interest in combining agricultural and natural elements drove her to explore new techniques and materials for this project. Traditionally, she had worked with paper and created intricate laser-cut artworks, but for this outdoor sculpture, she decided to work with metal for the first time.
"I’ve always worked with paper, but this time, I wanted to challenge myself and work with something more durable, suitable for an outdoor display," she said.
Using metal required Katya to learn new skills, particularly in plasma cutting, a technique she had never attempted before.
"This was my first time using plasma cutting on metal sheets, and it was definitely a challenge," she said.
To overcome the difficulties of working with metal, particularly in terms of welding and structural stability, Katya sought assistance from skilled artisans who helped guide her through the process.
"I had to reach out for help, especially with welding, which was completely new to me. It was a steep learning curve, but I’m proud of the final result," she said.
The experience has not only enhanced her technical abilities but also broadened her artistic horizons.
The recognition that came with winning Ephemera has had a significant impact on Katya.
"I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity. It’s given me the confidence to take on more metal art projects in the future," she shared.
The public display of her work is something she views as an honour, and she hopes to continue participating in similar competitions in the years to come.
Katya’s sculpture is more than just an impressive artistic achievement; it is also a conversation starter.
"Through this piece, I hope to encourage viewers to reflect on the balance between native wildlife and the agricultural industry. I want people to see how both can coexist and to consider the playful, interactive aspects of that relationship," she explained.
Her winning work not only celebrates the sugarcane industry but also invites the public to look more closely at the delicate balance between nature and human development.

A Spooktacular Night At The Halloween House

October 24, 2024

On the spooky evening of Thursday 31 October, the ghosts and ghouls of the Burdekin will come alive for one spooktacular night of scares, sweets, and horror at the iconic, Halloween House, opposite the Ayr Golf Course.

An outstanding display of lights and decorations will ignite Darwin Street to celebrate the frightful holiday with plenty of fun treats for everyone to enjoy. An almost three weeklong affair, Jeffrey Lunn and Leon McCormack decorate their home from top to bottom, producing amazing results for many beloved holidays across the calendar. The pair spend many weeks not only planning the final display, but also testing lights and props to ensure everything is in tip top shape, ready for show, making repairs and replacements as needed.

Jeffrey and Leon have been treating the region to their terrific talents since they moved to the area in 2008 and are always beyond excited for the community to experience their magical displays. In recognition of Jeffrey and Leon’s amazing work, the 2024 Burdekin Shire Council Australia Day Awards saw the pair win the title of Community Event of the Year for their 2023 Christmas Lights Display.

“We have been hosting the Halloween Night since 2017, so this year will be our eighth year,” explained Jeffrey.

“The idea of doing a Halloween display was born from experiencing a traditional Halloween night whilst on holiday in the USA many years ago.

“We wanted to reproduce the festive atmosphere associated with Halloween, and the fun of costumes, and trick or treating.”

With many lights displays fixed across the pair’s home, their front yard is also covered with plenty of spooky Halloween props, all tied together with the sounds of ghostly Halloween music, creating a unique, and wonderful atmosphere for all to enjoy. This year’s display will also host the debut of several new lights and scary props, and the community is invited to join in on the fun by coming along dressed to impress in awesome, spooky costumes!

In keeping with the trick or treating traditions of the October celebration, popcorn, snow cones, fairy floss and candy will be on offer to the community next Thursday night from 6:30pm onwards. The local Home Hill – Ayr Lions Club will also be visiting the Halloween House, providing attendees with a sausage sizzle, and soft drinks to fundraise for the amazing work they do in the community.

“We want everyone to enjoy a relaxed family fun night out, dressed in their scariest Halloween costumes!”

Ros Row’s Tunes and Tales

October 25, 2024

For the past three years, radio host Ros Row has been captivating audiences with a rich blend of musical genres and heartfelt moments. Drawn to this profession by a deep love for music and an invitation from a friend, Ros recalls lying in bed on Sunday afternoons, immersed in the Top 40 hits. “I love all genres of music,” she shares, embodying the spirit of a true music enthusiast.
Among the many artists that inspire Ros, Matchbox Twenty and their charismatic frontman, Rob Thomas, hold a special place in her heart. Having seen Thomas perform four times, Ros reflects, “Their songs mean so much to me.” This admiration not only fuels her passion for music but also shapes her career in radio.
The emotional connection music creates is something Ros cherishes deeply. A standout moment during her time on air occurred when a listener called to request a song for his late wife. “It was very emotional and touched my heart,” she recalls. Such instances reinforce the idea that music can profoundly impact lives.
Preparation for each live show is meticulous; every Wednesday afternoon, Ros curates a playlist spanning from the 1950s to the present, ensuring a diverse listening experience. Engaging with the audience is also vital, as listeners frequently call in with song requests, reminding Ros that there’s a vibrant community tuning in.
Aspiring radio hosts can take Ros's advice: “Do it. It’s good fun. The people here are welcoming, and I love being part of the community.” She acknowledges the challenge of ensuring listeners are engaged, especially during longer segments. “People have the radio on in the background, so keep it brief and let the music play,” she advises.
Despite the occasional technical glitch during live broadcasts, Ros handles challenges with grace, often relying on her quick thinking and the support of the station manager, Charlie. As she encourages others to follow their passion for radio, Ros concludes, “It doesn’t matter how I feel on the outside; by the time I come home, I feel good. It’s good fun.”
