Ayr State High School has congratulated its 2026 student leadership team, who have already been carrying out their duties since their induction at last year’s Academic Awards ceremony. The school acknowledged the students’ commitment and leadership, recognising the important role they play in representing their peers and contributing to school life. Leading the 2026 cohort are School Captains Caitlyn Cheyne and Ayden Barnett, supported by School Vice Captains Karina Guglielmi and Charlie Shears. Other leadership positions include Ashlee Colls as Sports Vice Captain, Allegra Tallis as Indigenous Students’ Vice Captain, Sarah as Cultural Vice Captain, and Tiana Cameron as Community Service Vice Captain. The leaders were formally presented to the school community during the 2025 awards night held last October, marking a proud moment for students, staff and families as the team continues its leadership journey throughout the year. ‘Stranger danger’ now just a click away, warns eSafety

For many Burdekin parents, the phrase “stranger danger” brings back memories of warning children not to talk to unfamiliar adults on the walk home from school. Today, those strangers are no longer confined to parks or shopping centres—they can appear instantly on a child’s phone or tablet screen. The eSafety Commissioner has issued a fresh Online Safety Advisory highlighting the risks posed by anonymous “random chat” apps, where users are paired with strangers for live video or text conversations. Platforms such as Omegle, Chatroulette, HOLLA, Monkey and OmeTV are designed for spontaneity and global connection. While Omegle shut down in late 2023, others remain active and accessible in Australia. The advisory warns that for children and young people, these platforms can quickly become gateways to inappropriate content, manipulation and sexual exploitation. Anonymous chat apps allow people to connect instantly, often with minimal registration requirements and limited age verification. Users are randomly paired, live video can expose children to explicit material within seconds, and anonymity enables predators to hide their identity and intentions. Conversations may also be recorded and misused without consent. Omegle became notorious for pairing minors with adults engaging in sexual behaviour. In 2022 alone, the platform reportedly flagged more than 500,000 instances of child sexual abuse material. In a high-profile United States case, an 11-year-old girl was coerced into creating explicit content. Omegle later settled legal action for US$22 million before shutting down. Its founder acknowledged the platform had been misused for “unspeakably heinous crimes”. eSafety said the problem is not new, but is worsening. Children now carry video-enabled devices everywhere, pandemic lockdowns increased unsupervised screen time, and evolving technology—including AI and real-time video—makes harmful interactions harder to moderate. Under the Online Safety Act 2021, eSafety has powers to enforce Basic Online Safety Expectations, require companies to improve moderation systems and order the removal of unlawful content within 24 hours. The regulator recently issued a formal warning to OmeTV’s provider for allegedly failing to meet mandatory requirements under Australian law. Apple and Google have also been notified, as both companies are required to act if apps available in their stores breach Australian legislation. Penalties of up to $49.5 million are available under the Act. eSafety’s guidance to families is practical and direct. Parents and carers are encouraged to use device-level parental controls such as Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link, block high-risk sites, and consider monitoring tools. Just as importantly, they should talk openly with children about online interactions, reinforce rules about sharing personal information, and ensure young people know how to block and report users. The advisory stresses that responsibility should not fall on families alone. Technology companies are being urged to implement stronger age assurance measures, properly resource moderation teams and design platforms with safety at the forefront. For regional communities like the Burdekin, where children are growing up as digitally connected as their city counterparts, online safety begins at home and requires a united effort from parents, schools, industry and regulators alike. COMMUNITY CALLS FOR ACTION: As Molongle Creek All-Tide Access Promise Falls Short

Residents across the Burdekin and Whitsunday Shires, alongside the Molongle Creek Boat Club Inc. (MCBC) and the wider Cape Upstart community are calling on the State Government to honour its 2021 commitment to provide and maintain all-tide access at Molongle Creek. The Molongle Creek access channel is the only marine gateway to Cape Upstart, home to approximately 240 private properties that are accessible by sea only. Despite decades of volunteer investment and a formal handover to the government, thousands of locals are pushing for action, stressing the integral role the channel plays in connecting Cape Upstart with essential services and access to the mainland. Surveys have exhibited 15,000 to 20,000 vessels annually utilise the channel, which includes locals, visitors, fishers and caravan park users. Despite its importance, locals say the channel no longer provides reliable all-tide access, contrary to commitments made during the 2016 state election and formalised during a 2021 handover. “The lack of all-tide access severely restricts people’s access to their properties at Cape Upstart,” highlighted Molongle Creek Boat Club Commodore, Ken Betteridge. Currently, there’s no alternative all-tide public boating access between Townsville and Bowen, making Molongle Creek critical regional infrastructure. A Facility Built by Volunteers The Molongle Creek Boat Club (MCBC) was formed in 1962, with the aim of improving boating access for both members and the wider public. Over the past several decades, the facility has been developed and maintained almost entirely through volunteer labour, private funding and club-owned machinery. Early attempts to maintain access involved reshaping natural channels, with club members using dozers, excavators and, in some cases, explosives to create viable passage through shifting sands. When those efforts failed due to natural sediment movement, the club established the current channel alignment, again through volunteer work. MCBC volunteers have carried out annual maintenance for years using a Komatsu swamp dozer owned by the club, however, increasing environmental restrictions, permit changes and rising costs eventually made self-maintenance untenable. Election Promise and Handover In the lead-up to the 2016 state election, both major parties committed to delivering an all-tide access channel at Molongle Creek. That commitment culminated in a tri-party Deed of Agreement between the State Government, Whitsunday Regional Council and the Molongle Creek Boat Club. As part of the agreement, the club was required to surrender its lease and gift all sea- and land-based assets to the State and Local Government, allowing public funds to be spent on the facility. A formal valuation placed the value of those assets at $2.84 million. In 2021, the Molongle Boating Facility was officially handed over to State Government control, with the expectation government would develop and maintain the all-tide access channel, boat ramps, pontoon and trailer parking in line with other public boating facilities across Queensland. Design Concerns and Infill Issues According to long-standing club members, concerns were raised during the design phase that the chosen alignment would be vulnerable to flooding and sediment infill from Molongle Creek, particularly during wet seasons. Locals advocated for an alternative alignment further east, or the construction of a protective bund wall to shield the channel from flood flows. Those concerns, they say, were ignored. “Molongle Creek Boat Club’s lobbying secured funding for an all-tide channel, however, due to various government departments, the placement of the channel was restricted to where it is now,” Mr Betteridge said. “The choice presented to us was a channel where it is – or was – or no channel at all. We knew it would be problematic, but MCBC had no choice but to accept. There’s been a lot of money spent, and the result is disappointing to say the least.” Within months of the channel’s completion, wet-season flooding filled the channel with sediment, significantly reducing depth. While bed levelling in 2022 and 2023 temporarily improved access, a major wet season in 2024 again rendered the channel largely unusable. No maintenance funding has been allocated since. As a result, access windows have narrowed dramatically. Club members say the channel was once usable on a 1.7-metre tide; now, small vessels require tides of 2.4 metres or higher, eliminating daylight access on many days. “All-tide access?” one local asked. “It’s anything but.” Safety Concerns Escalate The lack of reliable access has raised serious safety concerns, particularly given the demographics of Cape Upstart and peak holiday periods when usage surges. Over the years, residents have been forced to transport injured or ill people by boat to meet ambulances at Molongle Creek, but only when tides allow. When tides are out, emergency helicopters have been relied upon, though they are not always available. “Over the years, there have been quite a few medical incidences where the access to Molongle Creek was tidally available – if no tide, the emergency helicopter was luckily available,” said Mr Betteridge. In one recent incident, two young boys were stung by Irukandji jellyfish at Kingfish Bay, however, fortunately, the tide allowed access back through Molongle Creek, yet locals say the outcome could have been far worse had the tide been out. After Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) crews conducting welfare checks were forced to use Wallace’s Creek instead of Molongle due to the channel’s condition, a longer, more exposed and potentially dangerous route. A spokesperson for the State Emergency Service said the agency remained committed to community safety. “The State Emergency Service (SES) is committed to working with the Molongle Creek and Cape Upstart communities to provide essential services to the region and maintaining community safety,” the spokesperson said. “The SES operates within a broader disaster management framework and works closely with partner agencies to deliver safe and effective responses to the community during severe weather events.” Calls for Practical Solutions The Molongle Creek Boat Club maintains that solutions already exist. Chief among them is the construction of a bund or barrier wall, either from rock or geotextile bags filled with dredged sand, a method already proven at the site, where a small geotextile wall has successfully reduced infill for more than 25 years. Club members argue such a barrier would significantly reduce sediment movement, extend the time between dredging cycles and deliver the year-round access originally promised. “There are approximately 240 dwellings at Cape Upstart that use molongle Creek as their main, and only access port – a 365 day all-tide access channel will definitely improve the safety of the whole community,” said Mr Betteridge. “We need a bund wall sooner rather than later, and MCBC along with the bulk of the public community know that a bund wall is the only solution to keep the channel open 365 days a year.” Local State Member for Burdekin, Dale Last, said responsibility for the failed delivery rested with the former government. “The former government went to the 2017 election with a commitment to provide all-tide access at Molongle Creek. The unfortunate reality is that they failed to deliver on their promise,” Mr Last said. “I have supported the campaign for all-tide access since the very beginning, largely based on the need to be able to respond to emergencies quickly, rather than waiting for tides. The assurance that I have given, and stand by, is that I will continue to work with stakeholders for a better outcome for all users of Molongle Creek.” He said concerns raised by the boat club during the design phase were ignored. “Promises were made and expectations were built on those promises. Clearly those expectations were not met and, clearly, the promises made were broken.” Mr Last acknowledged ongoing challenges related to permits and environmental approvals but said Maritime Safety Queensland had committed to working with stakeholders on a long-term management strategy. “There are a range of issues affecting the ability to undertake maintenance at Molongle Creek. If the input from the Molongle Creek Boat Club was given the attention it deserved, many of the issues we face today would not exist,” he said. “Despite the challenges, the Club has been given a direct commitment that Maritime Safety Queensland will work closely with them and key stakeholders to develop and implement a long-term management strategy.” Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, said the Molongle Creek boating facility was a vital piece of infrastructure for the Cape Upstart community and regional boaters, particularly for emergency access. “The Molongle Creek boating facility is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Cape Upstart community and regional boaters; it is especially significant for safety, as Volunteer Marine Rescue and residents rely on this channel for emergency transport.” Mr Willcox said the channel continued to face natural challenges due to its geographic location. “The Molongle Creek Channel currently faces ongoing challenges due to its geographic location: the flow at the mouth of the creek frequently causes sand to accumulate and choke the channel.” He said responsibility for maintaining the facility had shifted to the State Government during his time as Whitsunday Mayor, and that a permanent engineering solution was needed. “During my time as Whitsunday Mayor, the State Government assumed responsibility for the maintenance of this facility to ensure its continued operation.” “In my assessment, a permanent infrastructure solution is required to address the siltation issues: this would involve installing sheet piling or a rock wall to protect the channel and keep it open

Burdekin Tobacco Store Temporarily Closed Amid Statewide Crackdown

Burdekin Tobacco on Edwards Street, Ayr, has been temporarily closed as part of a state government crackdown on illegal tobacco outlets, with almost 200 shops across Queensland shut down since new laws were introduced in November 2025. The statewide operation saw an extra 51 stores closed during a ten-day blitz from 25 November to 4 December, including Burdekin Tobacco, adding to earlier closures. Experts say this is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Australian Association of Convenience Stores chief executive Theo Fukkare told the Townsville Bulletin that the closures were a positive step but warned that authorities would need to monitor the stores closely as they prepare to reopen. “We think 200 is maybe a quarter of all of the available stores selling illegal products, so there’s still a long way to go,” he said. “I would suggest that potentially, the authorities have gone for the high-profile ones in high-profile areas, though there are a lot more through the state.” The closure of Burdekin Tobacco was issued under the state’s new tobacco laws, aimed at curbing the sale of illicit cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine products. Authorities have seized more than 2.5 million illicit cigarettes, 31,000 vapes, and nearly 39,000 nicotine pouches across Queensland since the crackdown began. Burdekin Tobacco was one of six tobacconists in the region. Located in the Burdekin Plaza, it was a popular option for locals. The closure leaves a gap for residents who regularly purchased legal tobacco products from the Burdekin outlet. Some of the closed stores, including Burdekin Tobacco, could reopen soon, with authorities expected to monitor compliance closely. Authorities say checks will continue to ensure stores operate within the law when they reopen. I’m excited to introduce myself as I take on the journalist role for Burdekin in the interim. I’ll be in the region multiple times each week, so I’m looking forward to getting to know the community!

I’ve been with Life Publishing Group and Whitsunday Life Newspaper for nearly a year now. While Whitsunday Life has been my main focus, I’ve worked across all our newspapers behind the scenes. Before moving to Australia, I worked in Sky News’ political department in the UK, and during my time in Sydney, I pursued freelance journalism.

Bob: “Well I reckon what they should be doing here is some sort of festival that includes the children and teenage kids that gives them something to do and look forward to. In the modern age it could maybe be something like them four-wheelers where they could ride around the Showgrounds on their quad bikes. It’d be better than just hanging around on their phones doing nothing. When we were growing up we made our fun. Kids today don’t seem to be able to do that but that’s because there’s more restrictions on children today than when I was growing up.”

Rachael: “Probably a music festival like they do in Mareeba in the Cairns hinterland with the big one they have up there called Savannah in the Round. It’s a big music festival over a long weekend. They have lots of bands where they get some big names like Lee Kernaghan, and then there’s a lot of local bands from the Cape, too. They could also get kids from schools and have a battle of the bands perform as well. They could do it over a long weekend. They could put it at the Showgrounds as that’s the most likely place because it’s got a big area for stages and things like that.”

Frank: “I’m from Bowen so I don’t really know what works up here but I love nothing more than the international food festivals. The town could do well out of it. They could get food from all over such as Indian, Chinese, Greek, Middle Eastern, Italian, Latin American, Australian, Korean etc. Just make it affordable so that everybody can go and sample a bit of everything. You could even include wine tasting, boutique beers and microbreweries, and so forth. They could even have music to match the different regions like Indian or Greek music. They could host it near the water where it’s peaceful and people can go and sit in the shade and do their own thing.”

Jo: “An Arts & Crafts festival would be good, anything art really. Painting, craft paints, needlework, macrame, you name it. I think they might do something like that at Memorial Hall, though I haven’t been to one yet. I’m also into classic cars but that’s another thing and they often put on their own shows. The cars could drive up and down the street before they stop somewhere in a park so people can see them and take photos.”

Sid: “A songwriters festival! Because I used to write songs where I’ve got about 90 odd at the moment, though nothing ever published, it’s always been a thrill for me. So I wound’t mind a songwriters festival or competition. It doesn’t have to be a band or a music festival just songwriters who write the songs with chords and a tune. Normally you produce a CD with your song on it but it doesn’t have to be professionally done as long as it’s a songwriter writing. So yeah, a songwriting festival for songwriters that doesn’t necessarily have to be a competition.”

The Neighbourhood Centre aims to foster a welcoming and supportive environment where community members feel encouraged to engage in open discussions about everyday life. This often includes navigating complex conversations and sharing meaningful experiences to gain valuable insights. These interactions not only enhance our connections but also promote a deep sense of belonging and mutual support within the community.

Two weeks ago, we provided opportunities for locals to present to other locals in two extremely powerful sessions regarding incredibly important subjects that affect our broader community in one way or another.

Our first session was presented by Amie at Burdekin Funerals regarding all the different funeral options available to residents and how we can financially, logistically and emotionally prepare for planning this event with dignity and respect.

Our second session was presented by Kim and Marieanne from the CBA Ayr Branch regarding Staying Safe Online and was directly linking in with scams, fraud, how to identify, report and set yourself up to ensure that you are staying safe online.

After these sessions, a variety of questions emerged from the discussions, opening the conversations for further exploration and dialogue.

We greatly value the insights and experiences of all our community members. If you have a passion for sharing knowledge, or if you have expertise in a particular area that you believe could assist or increase awareness within our community, we urge you to reach out to the team at the Centre. Burdekin Hits Its Target

The Burdekin Clay Target Club held its Annual 2-Day Shoot on Saturday and Sunday, 8th and 9th March, attracting 75 shooters who competed under sweltering conditions. Despite the extreme heat, the event was a great success, thanks to the support of sponsors including B & M Drilling, QMN, John & Gina Calligaro, CVS Mechanical, Russo & Vella, AGnVet, Lui & Inez Populin, NQHF, Glen Rea & Kirknie Station, and Burdekin Air Conditioning & Electrical. Special thanks go to Lui Populin for the raffle prize donation and Ben Beazley & Michael Zabala for providing power.

Burdekin Clay Target Club Shoots To Win

The club’s efforts were greatly appreciated, with the grounds looking impeccable thanks to the hard work of members. Shooters came from all over, demonstrating widespread support for the event. The next competition, the 100 Target Double Barrel, will be held on Sunday, 13th April.

In the event results, the 25 Target Point Score saw Ray Collinson and Joseph Rossato topping AA Grade with perfect scores of 75/75, while Col Edgerton claimed the 30 Target Medley with 74/75 in the Open category. In the 25 Target Single Barrel, Joseph Rossato finished first in the Open with a flawless 38/38.

The Kirknie Station High Gun, sponsored by Glen Rea & Kirknie Station, saw Joe Caruso triumphing with a score of 297/305 in the Open category. Other notable winners included Sarah Sebastiani, who claimed the B Grade title with 275/305, and Aiden Sebastiani, who was the Junior winner with 277/305.

The club looks forward to its next event in April, continuing the tradition of friendly yet competitive shooting.

"A Collaborative Approach" With The New Burdekin Chamber Of Commerce Committee

More than 30 people attended the first Burdekin Chamber of Commerce event of the year, held at the Kalamia Hotel in Ayr last Wednesday evening.

A new and enthusiastic committee has stepped forward to lead the Chamber, and Treasurer Kari Ravizza expressed optimism for the year ahead.

"Our aim is to increase the profile of all businesses," she explained. "Our meetings will be more like troubleshooting sessions where everyone can share knowledge and learn how we can all support each other."

The newly formed committee includes President Eusebio Aguirre, Vice President Frank Nucifora, Secretary Thomasina Papadimitriou, and Treasurer Kari Ravizza. Executive members are Jenny Papale, Rose Papadimitriou, Marissa Zanella, and Linda Butler.

The committee is already planning to maximise membership throughout the year and has introduced some innovative strategies. One of the fresh ideas is an Instagram campaign, where a local volunteer will interview business owners to share their stories. Another idea is the creation of a Chamber Catalogue to promote members, and the committee is in talks with the local newspaper to find the most efficient way to implement it.

Additionally, the Burdekin Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a positive and collaborative relationship with the Home Hill Chamber of Commerce.

“Home Hill Chamber of Commerce has been very gracious in allowing our members to attend their meetings, and we have done the same in return,” shared Kari. “This collaborative approach will benefit all businesses across the region.”

The next Chamber Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 8th April at the Kalamia Hotel, and future meetings will take place on the second Tuesday of each month.

What sets BCHS apart is its commitment to ensuring families feel supported and informed throughout the high school selection process. By offering these hands-on experiences, BCHS recognises that choosing a high school is about more than just academics—it is about finding a community where students will thrive. Signs of domestic violence can vary and may include physical injuries, frequent absences from work or social activities, noticeable changes in behaviour or mood, isolation from friends and family, controlling or possessive behaviour from a partner, and fearfulness or anxiety around their partner. When you notice these signs, it's vital to approach the situation with sensitivity and empathy. Express concern for their wellbeing and offering support without judgment. Encourage them to seek help from professionals who are trained to handle such situations safely and confidentially.

Burdekin Community Association Inc. (BCA) is a local service provider that can offer support services such as counselling, safety planning, and referrals to shelters and legal services, or DV Connect (1800 811 811) who are also available for crisis support 24-7. Both BCA and DV Connect can guide people through the process of seeking help and will provide ongoing support as they navigate their situation.

Remember, domestic and family violence thrives in silence. By speaking up and offering support, you can help break the cycle of abuse and empower survivors to seek the assistance they need to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

Top Of The Morning To You! Burdekin Christian College

Despite the rainy weather, spirits were high as students and staff embraced the festive spirit of St Patrick’s Day by donning green attire. Burdekin Christian College hallways were filled with excitement as participants took part in various themed activities, bringing a touch of Ireland to the occasion.

Among those enjoying the celebrations was Miss Diamond, who was particularly delighted by the festivities, reminiscent of her homeland. The event was an opportunity for students to learn more about Irish culture and traditions while having fun.

One of the highlights of the day was the sharing of an old Irish blessing: “May your heart be light and happy, may your smile be big and wide, and may your pockets always have a coin or two inside.” The sentiment captured the joyful atmosphere of the day as students enthusiastically participated in games, crafts, and storytelling sessions.

The search for the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow added to the excitement, with pupils eager to uncover hidden treasures around the school grounds. Staff also joined in the celebrations, making the day a memorable one for all involved.

The event proved to be a wonderful way to mark St Patrick’s Day, fostering a sense of community and cultural appreciation. As the festivities came to a close, students left with smiles on their faces and a greater understanding of the rich traditions of Ireland.

Local Schools Unite For A Cause At The World's Greatest Shave Event

Two local schools, Home Hill State High School (HHSHS) and Burdekin Catholic High School (BCHS) united to make the local iteration of the World's Greatest Shave a huge success. HHSHS expressed gratitude to key supporters, including BCHS Principal Mrs. Lorraine Wolfe, School Captain Harrison Lammon, and HHSHS Youth Support Worker Kellie Cooke. Special recognition was given to Kayli Betteridge and the brave students and staff who shaved or cut their hair to support those affected by blood cancer.

The annual Leukaemia Foundation campaign raises funds for research and patient support. This year’s event showcased incredible community spirit, with both schools surpassing their initial fundraising goal of $1,500, raising over $4,500. Their collective effort demonstrated the power of small communities coming together for a great cause. HHSHS and BCHS thanked all participants, donors, and supporters for fostering kindness, generosity, and unity while making a meaningful impact in the fight against blood cancer.

A special acknowledgment was given to Kayli Betteridge from BCHS and the courageous students and staff of both Home Hill State High School and Burdekin Catholic High School who took the brave step of having their hair cut to support this meaningful initiative. Their willingness to stand in solidarity with those affected by blood cancer highlights the spirit of generosity and compassion within both school communities.

Local VMR Announces Free Service

Ahead of the transition from Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) to Marine Rescue QLD (MRQ), current members will no longer receive membership invoices as the local branch prepares to shift towards the new free service.

The official transition is expected to take place in the coming months, and VMR President Ian Sutcliffe says they have decided not to send out the annual invoices.

"Current members will simply be rolled over to the new free service," explained Mr Sutcliffe.

VMRs across Queensland have operated as a membership-based service for many years, but this new initiative will integrate them into Marine Rescue, a government-funded entity that provides the same services for free to the boating community.

Previously, members paid an annual fee of $100, which entitled them to one free tow per year, along with other services.

There are approximately 600 members in the local VMR, and all proceeds went toward maintaining facilities and operating the vessels.

This cost will now be covered by the government.

We have already seen some good rain and the wet season is not done with yet as the forecast for the next couple of weeks is still very wet. Let’s hope we see the back of the wet season before Easter, so everyone has the chance to get outdoors and enjoy this great country we call home.If you haven’t got anything planned for the weekend, NQ Fastrack is happening at the Burdekin Theatre and the crew who put it all together have even managed to bring Hugh Sheridan to town for the event. Fast Track showcases up and coming talent from all over the region so don’t miss out on witnessing a future star. The heats run from 10am throughout the day before the Finals begin at 7pm. Minute with the Mayor Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort

Last weekend, we had the privilege of hosting a BBQ to thank the incredible volunteers who stepped up during the recent flood event. It was fantastic to see over 50 people come together to recognise the tireless efforts of those who worked around the clock to support our community. We were also joined by our local representatives, Hon Dale Last MP (Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Minister for Manufacturing and Minister for Regional and Rural Development and Member for Burdekin) and Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox, who showed their support for the Burdekin and the dedicated individuals who make a real difference in times of need.

Volunteers are the backbone of our community, and I can’t stress enough how important they are. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, I encourage you to check out local groups and see where you can lend a hand. You’ll not only be giving back but also meeting wonderful people and learning skills you never knew you had.

This Saturday, I’m looking forward to supporting NQ FastTrack Talent Showcase, a fantastic event that gives our young local performers a chance to shine. Showcasing youth talent is so important, and I can’t wait to see the next generation of stars take the stage.

Meanwhile, our Councillors are deep in budget discussions, ensuring we continue investing in the Burdekin’s future. It’s a busy time, but one that’s crucial for delivering the services and infrastructure our community relies on.

Response Moves Up A Gear For Farmers & Households

A month after the waters have receded and roads have reopened, the response to the recent severe weather event has stepped up a gear with increased support for primary producers and businesses and a focus on preparing for future events for households.

Member for Burdekin, Dale Last MP, said the changes delivered on the state government’s promise to community members and representative groups.

“In my role as Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, I signed off on the boost to grants for primary producers and small business last week,” Mr Last said.  “That addressed concerns raised with our government by representatives and follows the inclusion of re-planting (sugar cane) as an activity eligible for government support.”

“Authorising those changes was bitter-sweet because it meant one of our key industries had been severely impacted.  At the same time, ensuring the funding was available meant that those industries would receive the support they need.”

“I’m not interested in making a song and dance of support for people affected by severe weather.  I’d rather just make sure the support is actually available because those industries need results, not sideshows.”

“The weather event has also had a major effect on several areas in our river systems and work is underway now to identify the best response.  I would encourage landholders to work with groups like the River Trust in an effort to ensure the betterment strategy is implemented when it comes to our rivers.”

Mr Last said that additional assistance for households in flood-prone areas would assist those who had suffered damage while also focussing on preventing future damage.

“There are areas in our region that are exposed to flooding quite frequently and the government is committed to include those people as we push towards betterment,” Mr Last said.  “Relatively minor works can make a huge difference for those people when it comes to any future events.”

“Rather than replacing the same infrastructure and items over and over again, the Stronger Homes Grants allow homeowners to rebuild with confidence and break the cycle of repeated recovery costs.  For example, raising the height of a switchboard or relocating appliances now means that when the next event occurs, the recovery is quicker and there is less of a financial impact.”

“The state government is 100% committed to betterment for homes, for primary industry, for small business and for infrastructure.  The reason for that is simple; when we build back stronger, we not only focus on saving lives, but we also focus on saving livelihoods and key industries.”

“I signed off on the grants and loans because I believe, and the state government believes, our communities and our industries deserve the opportunity to not just survive, but to thrive.”

Local Manufacturers Invited to Roundtable

Local manufacturers will have the opportunity to engage directly with the Queensland Government as the Hon. Dale Last, Minister for Manufacturing, participates in a roundtable discussion on the industry's challenges and future opportunities.

The roundtable, hosted by Burdekin Shire Council, will take place on Friday 28 March 2025, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at the Ayr SES Building, 4 McCathie Street, Ayr. A virtual option will also be available for those unable to attend in person via Microsoft Teams.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort encourages local manufacturers to take advantage of this unique opportunity to share their experiences directly with the Minister and learn more about the State Government’s initiatives to support the sector.

"Manufacturing is a critical industry for the Burdekin and broader North Queensland region, providing jobs and driving economic growth," Mayor Dalle Cort said.

"This roundtable is a chance for our local businesses to have their voices heard at a State level and contribute to shaping policies that support industry growth."

Participants will have the opportunity to share their challenges and experiences with the Minister and gain insight into the Queensland Government’s plans to support the manufacturing sector.
